this rainforest japan lark. Do you need to do anything special (ie jap address etc) or do they send overseas. I have to say all my bought anime is from 2 of the better known online stores and am looking for a few more good sources.

I know some have been mentioned (somewhere :)) but where would you say is the best option for region 2 (or region free) purchases - I prefer these purely due to being lazy with making things region free.

The only thing with the .jp site is that the sign up has an extra name field compared with the us and uk sites ... just put your name in it again. They ship internationally but that shipping only has the option of Fedex International Express which means shipping is a minimum cost of around £18 and you will be charged duty+vat+admin on any shipment. But as I say you have to expect zero English on the product, I quite like it if I have seen the series from other sources enough times to know the story already even without subs. Also note that Japanese release patterns are different from western ones in that they normally only have ~2 episodes per DVD so a 13 episode series can have 7 DVDs. They are also expensive compared with what you'll have been used too, even before shipping etc.

I have had a few DVDs and a lot of OSTs from their .jp site. I don't think I have had much in the way of artbooks from them though. Artbooks and figures I have had from BeNippon, (but be aware that with them you pay and then they try and get the goods and if they can't they refund you (I haven't had issues though)). There was also this little shop in the mall near Memorial Park in Hiroshima and another round the back of Akihabara station :p

Region 1 & 2 (UK), I tend to use United Publications for convenience but they aren't the cheapest source or probably even the best. RightStuf are good as are DVDPacific and I have heard good things about DVDBoxOffice but I've never used them. I've even been known to use "rainforest" uk and us or even the jersey shop if they have what I want for a decent price.

I've had some good purchases off eBay and you get to know what sellers to look out for (and I won't tell you who in case you snipe what I'm bidding on ;) ... although I will say that my R.O.D figure I mentioned above came from EyeOnAsia).

With Region free ... no idea, you see it on eBay but that's normally a good indication that it's a dodgy copy and I'd rather pay more for a genuine article.

That is great news :)
Hopefully it'll be at least as good as the first :)

For anyone that is interested rightstuf.com are doing a 40% off all Funimation DVD's at the moment, I ended up ordering the Full Metal Panic Second Raid set for about $35 + shipping, and Ah! My Goddess Second season set for about $42 + shipping.

Watched The Third - The Girl with the Blue Eye earlier ... good series with lots of action. And, surprisingly these days, decent booklets in the DVD cases ...
Great series that!
question for you lot:)
have seen GITS movie #1 but not #2 innocence or #3 solid state.Have only seen 1 disc of GITS SAC
Will watching movie #2 and #3 spoil the rest of GITS SAC when i get around to watching the rest of the series?:)

You can watch Innocence without seeing SAC as like the first movie it sits within a different "universe" to the series. You should really both SAC #1 and #2 before watching Solid State Society though.

No probs.

After the action of The Third yesterday today was a bit more relaxed with Petite Princess Yucie. The is a magical girl series, (as can be guessed from the title).

The series was a reasonable example of the genre with a good selection of characters and a good last few episodes.

Yep, as the man said Solid State Society carries on from the plot of the 2 TV seasons, whereas Ghost In The Shell and Innosence are sort of on a parallel timeline.

Innosence might be one of the best anime movies ever made btw.

I *ahem* got the speedycake remix and compared it to the AMV in my opinion it sounded different(the amv was more bright and punchy, not sure of the right words to use) but i preferred the amv to the music file
Please compare when you get the cd and let us know what you think :)

Finally got around to listening to the CD earlier. I was playing it back on an old ghetto blaster so the sound quality was poor compared with when I've played the AMV (need to rip the track to mp3 to compare) but it seemed pretty similar to me. Looking at the liner notes there seems to be several "speedy" remixes of the track (mentions another CD with a whole pile of them on it).

Can someone recommend me some sad anime? Ones that would go well with this thread. :p

Doesn't have to be a film, series if fine.

As I said in that thread Kanon (last disk due out in October on R1), Kimi gz Nozomu Eien, (aka Rumbling Hearts) and She the Ultimate Weapon. This is of course on top of Grave of the Fireflys.

It's quite hard to say really as a lot of series seem to just burble along nicely and then have a sad twist in the last plot arc, (Petite Princess Yucie being an example). It also depends on whether you are empathising with the characters or not, (there's a couple of plot arcs in S1 and S2 of Maria-sama which get me too).

Others include Air, the Clannad movie, and probably way more that I can't remember at the moment.

edit: It's not an anime (but is related), Densha Otaku (Train Man) ... film is out subbed on R1 and is another thing which tends to get to me in places [Spoiler ->] tends to get me when the main character is being looked for by everyone from the forum particularly when he realises it. Only problem is the casting of the film is nowhere near as good as the casting of the TV series.

As said it's really more to do with how you get involved with the anime, I personally get a tear in the eye more with anime than a film/tv series as in my view the series are often better put together.
Often as not theres parts which are sad, the ending of say eureka seven or chobits could be seen as being quite sad. But it really does depend on each person.

Anyway, just finished watching season one of code geass and I'm like why couldn't I get engrossed with it like eureka seven/chobits etc. It just seemed really lacking for some reason even though it had mecha, pretty good story premise etc. Anybody else feel like me about the series?

Yep, I don't know why but I just find some of the stories to be better and deeper than those you tend to get on other media. I suspect that as there is no physical acting it's easier for the series to portray the high angst level that they can tend to have which would be harder to do well with normal, physical, acting particularly with the normal age ranges of the characters. It's one of the things which is hard to explain to people who don't know about anime and have only seen western cartoons where you don't tend to have the depth of story .... you don't get the rush from them that you do when watching the end of the Love Hina Christmas Special after watching the series (or even the last episode of the series itself), or even when Run Rabbit Junk kicks in during an action scene in GitS.

Code Geass, it's a series I would like to like, I've read volume 1 of the manga but my DVD(s) haven't shipped yet due to the issues with volume one. After making quite a big dent into my "to watch" pile recently things have suddenly turned around with 7 DVDs shipping yesterday! .... that doesn't include some which are coming from .jp (and a couple more I may order from there today (chap I work with wants some headphones from there so I'm ordering them for him ... gives me an excuse to order a few extra things if he's paying towards postage anyway :))). At least Kujibiki Unbalance will have finished with this delivery, and a delivery yesterday filled in nicely some gaps in manga series I had :)
