All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Rooney started up top in almost all games last season, very few did he start out wide, only when Ferguson insisted on playing Giggs up top. Even when Rooney plays up top he naturally drifts to the left, he always has done this, ever since his Everton days.

He really needs to book his ideas up, his last load of performances have been abysmal, the worst being the Champions League final where he was embarassing. Last night he didn't cause a single problem, his runs were rubbish, and his link play atrocious. I said it last season and after what we've seen now Tevez is fully fit, Tevez does everything Rooney does and he does it better.

If we get another striker, for me it would be Rooney getting dropped.

Rooney has been like that for years.

He hasn't developed on early potential, it's as simple as that. He could still reach that potential but if he continues to be off the boil (and he usually is when I have watched Utd) then there's less chance of it happening.

His finishing is generally shocking for a striker. He hits the keeper, scuffs and wastes more chances. Then he's capable of hitting something like his volley against Newcastle.

I do have to admit that I'm getting very tired of Rooney's performances of late. To be honest, I think he lacks direction/leadership on the pitch. Someone to tell him where he should be. He just does his own thing and none of our players tell him to stay up front, or stay in the centre, etc.

He is still far away from reaching his full potential, but he needs guidance. I hope Solskjaer takes him to one side sometime soon and tells him what he should be doing and what he shouldn't be doing because it's clear no one else has or will.

i said awhile ago moving to utd hindered rooney, he'd have ended up more the player we expected at a club where he had a more defined role and less talent around him.

Well its very strange how Utd performed better when Rooney was in the side throughout last season, but all the other players didnt have the same effect

Personally I think people bash Rooney because its the cool thing to do

Dont get me wrong he hasnt got better for the last two seasons, but he still adds to the team like no one else. I bet he would improve 100 fold if/when we get a proper striker to feed off

Remember Rooney's down turn has really been aparant since Saha hasnt played, once he gets someone up ahead of him and gets to know that person's way of playing him and Tevez will become better players

The problem with Rooney is two fold. A complete lack of understanding from his respective managers on how to best utilise him and from opposing fans who choose to ignore why Ferguson would play him.

The problem with Rooney is that he needs to become entirely more selfish in front of goal. What often gets taken entirely for granted is his work ethic. Opposing fans will often say that he should be up the other end of the field doing this that and the other. But all these mid table charlies would kill to have a player who puts in 1/10 of the effort Rooney does. The other thing to remember is that Fergie still follows this very honest work ethic he instils in players and you have to say Rooney is the epitome of that. So is it any suprise he is played week in week out.

Why Rooneys contribution is under the spotlight is be because of our inability to convert simple chances. For me Rooney is the scorer of spectacular goals rather than holding a spectacular scoring record. Even when he was at Everton, nobody ever thought he was going to be a 30+ goal a season man.

Like Mark Hughes before him(Scorer of spectacular goals rather than spectacular scoring record) he was often criticised for not converting the simple chances. Yet his effort for the team was beyond question. It was only with the arrival of Le King that it allowed other players to weigh in with the goals from all over the pitch. I don't see this situation with Rooney to be any different. We might not be able change the way he plays now but in my humble and honest opinion Ronaldo wouldn't have got half the goals he got last year if it wasn't for Rooneys efforts. As such we wouldn't be sat here discussing if Rooney is fit for a place in the current champions of England and Europes side.

Rooney & Tevez need a player behind them that will allow them to push up or United need to sign an absolute predator in the box tomorrow for their efforts to be recognised

I have no doubts that he'll score another 20+ goals this season, it's just I think he's capable of reaching another level, going up that extra gear. Maybe it's the players around him, or the instructions he is given by Ferguson but he is not yet hitting his peak. I agree with everything you say, he is a workhorse and will always be criticised for not scoring more goals, he should be more selfish and try and score instead of laying the ball of to someone else. God knows it's worked for Ronaldo.

I agree with all that however there is no denying that he's not come close to fulfilling his potential. Had somebody said 4 years ago that one of Rooney or Ronaldo was going to go on and be one of the best in the world, i'd bet that everybody would have said it was going to be Rooney.

Regarding the point about not knowing how to best utilise him; i think it's pretty clear that he's at his best playing just off an out and out striker, preferably one who can run in behind sides. The problem he's going to have now, imo, is that if you do sign Berbatov he won't be able to play off of him as i can't see how you can play him ahead of Tevez atm and if you play all 3 of them then i'd imagine Rooney will end up on the left again.

Rooney is rubbish isnt he?

He's only been one of the highest scorers in the league for the past three years, even last year having had no less than TWO broken feet, he was still the twelfth highest scorer in the league.

Like all the talk about Berbatov, and how brilliant he is, didnt score as many as wayne in 06/07, and managed to score a whole three goals more than him last season.

People bash Rooney because they dont know football, its that simple, he is looking bad at the minute because the midfield since pre season has been shocking, it offers no threat going forwards, the passing has been dreadful and they seem to be under the impression that wayne is now 2 feet taller than last season.

rumourang for Newcastle is that our hottest prospect "TIM KRUL" has left the club to sigh for HSV with a view to sign for chelski later, tim krul - supposed to be the next Buffon, some may remember his only 1st team appearance against Palermo a few seasons back, he was well good

Gutted, 1.5 mil n all :(

Reports from Spain are suggesting we have signed Uruguay midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez from Valencia on a loan deal.

Nicknamed Nacho, Gonzalez is 26 years old and had been on loan to Monaco from his club Danubio F.C....

Valencia have signed the player, but he will come to NUFC on loan.

One issue with Rooney is that he tries time and time again to try delicate chips and lob passes that he simply cannot do. He isn't good enough. Rooney needs to start keeping the ball on the floor because his close control isn't good enough, nor is his passing at a standard where he has total control over creative passes like Cantona and Scholes had in their pomp.

Then there is the fact that he's lost a ton of pace already through foot injuries, so he seldom ever gets past the same men he was beat two or three times for fun before these injuries.

He cannot finish. He is as bad as Saha for one on one opportunities to the point you think he'll miss before he'll score, the same can't be said of people like Tevez, Ronaldo, Torres, Berbatov etc...

Rooney lacks any for of direction on the pitch, yet he appears to be the 4th choice captain after Rio Ferdinand, odd for a player that can't even keep himself in check. Rooney should look at someone like Tevez at how he handles situations.

But worst of all is the fact that Rooney has all the attributes required to be World Class, yet time and time again does the wrong things at the wrong times. His biggest problem without any shadow of doubt is his decision making. This can be seen in his passing, his movement on the pitch, his one on one choices and his shoot or pass scenarios.

Sure it's nice to see someone have all that effort tracking back, but how often does it work out in the end for us? That is of course the times he doesn't pick up a stupid yellow for a ridiculous tackle because he's stressed himself out. We have Carrick, Hargreaves, Anderson and one of the best defences in World football, with for me, the best 2 CB's you could ask for, so tell me, do we really need Rooney as all his 'effort' tracking back? I don't think so, and that is completely down to total mis-management.

To be fair we wont miss Krul.
We have Given and Harper, even though they arent young, still more than enough goalkeeping wise for a good few more year.

And who from spain??

We really need to get it sorted, 2days!
