Why are there so many Turks in N. London?

Let's be honest - they're not.

White - 5,209,900 - 69.4% (White British 58.0%; White Irish 2.5%; Other White 8.9%)
Mixed - 259,800 - 3.5%
South Asian - 982,600 - 13.1%
Black - 803,700 - 10.7%
East Asian or Other - 256,300 - 3.4%

Source.

To be fair, 30% of Londoners not being white is pretty shocking.

I propose a cull!

I'm no Enoch or anything, but England was almost strictly white not that long ago. It was full of you guessed it, English people. Now London's got 30% non-natives. Something's a bit iffy, don't you think? It's just immigration gone out of control. I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Why? What is it that shocks you about the colour of other people's skin?

Check out the population of the United Arab Emirates some time: 7 emirates; 5.4 million people, and only 15% are UAE nationals! The remaining 85% are all foreigners. And that's the entire population; not just one city.

That puts London's "30% non-whites" statistic into perspective, wouldn't you say?

Need I point out that a considerable number of those white people are not native to England themselves? Australians, South Africans, New Zealanders, West Europeans, Scots, Welsh, Irish... etc. Are you going to complain about them too?

In any case, they're not all permanent residents, so what's the big deal? I'm all for immigration control, but not on the basis of race. I'm glad that the UK has finally seen sense and copied Australia's immigration system. Now I just hope they stick to it.

I don't care about color of skin, I do care about people who come over don't even speak a lick of English though. Or people of a single ethnicity who pile together and take entire streets, making people outside of that group feeling like foreigners in their own country. I care about English people struggling to find jobs while immigrants are working for next to nothing - illegally. I care about people who feel threatened by one culture subverting another. I care about being able to mix with others who would gladly mix with me - which many of these immigrants refuse to do.

Skin color has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's like you think where all these people come from are just like England. Reality check: it's not.

its not the colour, its the number of 1st generation foreigners that is being referred to. I don't mind too much, but yeah - this country is, in particular regions, quite affected by immigration to the point that communities are becoming highly fragmented.
I'm not BNP, I'm just observing :-/

Just curious like. Visited my sister's today who lives in Stoke Newington and realised that by far the biggest ethnic group that lives there are Turks. I mean, it's clear why there are so many black, Pakistani and Indian immigrants cos of the empire etc - but Turkey was never in the empire, and historically we've had few close ties with them, even fought against 'em in 2 world wars. Turkey ain't part of the EU either, and I think there were loads of Turks in North London before the EU was conceived, so why the mass migration here?

Just to be clear, I'm not having a pop at immigrants here, just curious as to why they decided to come here?

Two world wars? Turkey were neutral in the Second World War.

You don't need to be BNP to feel an appreciation for English society. Jesus, this is how politically correct we've all become.

Yep, I'll tell you one thing: If I get the chance to stay out in Australia after my secondment, I'll do it without a second thought. At least they have a clue about immigration policy over there.

I'd miss the proper English country pubs though :(

I know so many people planning to emigrate because they think it's going down the pan here. A mate of mine is moving to Canada because he's had enough of chavs, crime, and mass immigration (curiously he's British born of Indian descent so it's not all an OMGZ Skinheadz White Supremacy thing).

When I went to Leicester, and noticed that I was pretty much the only white person around, I didn't feel that I was in England anymore. I was shocked to be honest, and we shouldn't have to feel like that.

Speaking as someone who has lived abroad, you'll find any country has it's own problems. A friend of mine recently moved to Canada actually and he can't stand the place and wants to either move back to London or Munich where he lived for a few years.

The grass is always greener and all that, but I'm sure you and others will find that out of you ever do actually emigrate. I lived abroad for 5 years but in the end came back, it certainly made me appreciate England a lot more.

I know exactly where you're coming from, as I do love this country despite its problems. I love the history, which you don't get in a lot of "new" countries. I've travelled a fair bit as well, and some places do make you appreciate what you have back home.

However, recently, I've started questioning whether it really makes sense to live in a crime ridden city, paying stupid amounts of taxes to support 16 year old Chardonnay and her 5 kids. I was planning to move out to the countryside next year, which would be more my style, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time until these sort of places get overrun with chavs and the results of mass immigration and lose their character...

We shall see :)

Spot on. Political Correctness stifles debate of such issues, and is counter-productive. It makes people more inclined to lean to the far right IMO (eg: BNP) :(

Speaking as an Australian, I agree with you; we do have a clue about immigration, which is precisely why you guys have copied our immigration system.

However, bear in mind that we are still a truly multicultural nation; immigrants account for 25% of Australia's total population. That's an even higher percentage than the UK. The difference is that we achieved this figure by controlled immigration, not "open slather".

I'm moving back home next year, with my English wife. I will have been in the UK for five and half years by that stage. I do like this place, and it has much to recommend it, but I would not want to live here permanently. It just doesn't have enough to offer.

I have spent some time in Aus already so am aware of this, and have no problem with it at all (well I wouldn't being a pom!). Immigration is fine as long as it's controlled, and the people that come in want to make a positive contribution to society. Hot asian chicks are never a bad thing, either ;)

It just irks me that so many people coming over to Britain now have no clue how things work here. Lots of them have no concept of queuing, manners, saying "please", "thank you" and the like. Lack of will to integrate/ignorance I suppose. Mind you, the chavs are just as bad...

Leicester does have a very high Asian population. Nevertheless, I've been there half a dozen times in the last month, and every place I visited was predominantly white. Every city will have its areas of ethnic concentration, and these are more obvious in a little place like Leicester.

I appreciate that it can be strange to find yourself surrounded by people of a different colour in a country that you still think of as a "white nation".

Every time I go to Handsworth (thankfully not often, as it's a dump) I am struck by the predominance of black and Asian people. But it doesn't shock me, and I can't understand why it would shock anyone else.
