First PES 2009 Review

I agree. I tend to find Pro Evo just to be a better football game. It feels better to play and the fact it competes so well with Fifa despite not being licensed (which is important to a lot of people), should be a testimony to what it offers. Even in the days where players had ridiculously changed names.

Fifa isn't a bad game by any means either, personally I just find it awkward to play and extremely linear.

I haven't touched a demo of either yet but I'm hoping this year's final offering is a lot better than what has been seen in recent years. The slow downs, slide show replays and absent crowds from recent titles just aren't good enough.

It's enough to make people switch and I can understand that, but wanting the game to fall off the face of the market won't be good for continued development of either Pro Evo or indeed Fifa.

Regardless of how poor last years evo was online when it works or in local MP nothing comes close to the gameplay.
Except for the first PS2 Pro Evo, every version since ISS Pro 98 destroys anything from 5 onwards (and especially the most recent versions). That's why I can't play it, it may well still be ok, but it's dropped too far from what it used to be.

I do agree with your main complaints about FIFA though. My take on it (posted originally in the FIFA thread):

As much as I like the game (and prefer it to what Pro Evo has become) it's certainly not perfect. Its still behind Pro Evo in certain aspects, and while it doesn't always have to be FIFA v Pro Evo, I put so much time into that game that I can't help but compare the two.

The one thing Pro Evo has always had down is the flow of the game, the responsiveness and control you feel you have over the players at all times. It's not something thats easy to articulate, the best way of describing it would be having Pro Evo at one end of the scale, where you feel like you have complete control over your players' every action, and at the other end Virtua Striker which was the most unresponsive footie game I ever played; it was always a struggle, but as it was basically the 40 yard screamer/overhead kick game, it was still fun. FIFA falls somewhere inbetween these two, and possibly a little closer to the Virtua Striker end of the scale, which is why I think it's one area that FIFA probably won't fully catch up on.

FIFA does enough right in many areas to make up for this somewhat (but also Pro Evo has done so much wrong that it's hard not to turn away from it) but the control of the game is such an important aspect, I can see why some still have trouble with FIFA.

Yes I suppose if your an old fan of the series then it it's slumped you would be upset. As a new fan to the series I don't have those frustrations.

So for me all that was broken was the online.

I played a lot of local MP on the last one and was more than happy with it. It's just the online and replays that was broken beyond belief.

I will probably leave this one and hope they get it right and catch up with the online for the next version.

Indeed, and I seem to be one of the few to not be completely negative about the few vids of 2009 so far.

It certainly looks better than I expected and I think you should at least keep it under consideration. Obviously I can only go by the little that is out there, but I see things there that make me believe people who liked 2008 will very much like 2009.

I'm glad i'm not the only one whose noticed.

I tried the fifa demo and it just isn't for me. It has some great features, the presentation, the options, the graphics, the online works etc etc

Yet when you get down to the game the controls feel like an atari joystick is controlling them. With evo I always got the feeling I was playing a more realistic football match due to the percentage of shots you could score from outside the box. In fifa it's just too easy to score from 25 yards.

The responsiveness of the Fifa controls are frankly woeful. It's like playing evo with your feet.

That said they don't look like they have done enough with this years evo to make it a worthwhile purchase but I certainly won't be making do with another game. I'd rather not bother.

Regardless of how poor last years evo was online when it works or in local MP nothing comes close to the gameplay.

What are you kidding easy to score from outside box if it was so easy then what is PES lol always use to blast 30 yarder and 20 yarder in not to mention ridiculous scorelines in mp 6-7 goals a game. Them scores just dont happen on Fifa due to way it plays its more methodical game PES just pick up play know what to expect been there got T-Shirt experience. Try switching to Semi shooting in Fifa instead of silly assisted where computer does all work for you still dont get how you say it easy to score long range shots it really is not.

Also players shift there bodyweight in real life ala Fifa silly arcade turn on sixpence controls are not way to go for realistic game. Animations dated in PES now same old engine since PS1 days just new lick of paint same old foot planting issues not to mention bugs with AI and cheating its same old stuff. Animation is also stiff and rigid on next gen games look at video of PES 2009 its very evident i would rather play PS2 version of PES now just sums up woeful next gen effort will see from demo of 09 but dont hold much hope.

Fifa wins with manual controls yes a game where you feel you are in control not like PES but hey most of you guys will slap it on for 20 mins and say same old Fifa and not learn what game offers. Need to get PES way of playing out your heads its new way of playing responsiveness is much better then has been cant understand this point but anyway learn game and im sure more would appreciate it at least.

Most people here dont hate for no reason but at end of day its all about opinion i certainly dont want PES to fail i will go back if they make a decent Pro Evo again. But it dosnt look like going to happen this year Pro Evo needs a new engine it just dosnt touch Fifa now for me need to use new technology this is why most feel it has become stale it like polishing a turd.

Seriously i cant be bothered to say same old crap everytime thread comes up this had been discussed in so many other PES and Fifa threads its unreal but many on this forum who have given there reasons to why PES going down hill but most seem to think this all fifa fanboy hatred. Well i played PES since beginning not to mention most of winning eleven games aswell it saddens me to see that Evo has lost its way but its there lack of evolution that has cost them.

If people continue to support Evo fine by me but dont think your game not going to get criticism i suggest looking outside of forum and seeing people reasons for disliking PES now.

Thank god looks like PES 2010 going to have new engine though be nice to have 2 decent football games. :)

I still think pro evo is better :)

Fair play but it was console version of Fifa you played right because earlier post seemed to resemble the PC version quite abit.

Now obviously its all in Spanish, but its safe to say the ‘92′ at the bottom of the last page is easily translatible ;)

So a fantastic start for PES 2009 then, we should know what PSM3 gave the game in the next few days. For now enjoy the news pics from the game, while we try our best to get you a full translation!

In the mean time, here’s a quick translation. Thank you to das1925 for this!

From the article:

- 8 different cameras, and each of them at 3 heights
- It also mentions that all 32 CL teams have full kits and names
- Players change facial expression when they lose the ball, they scream
- A.I. has improved very much according to the article
- The players are very much like the real counterparts
- Great illumination and weather effects
- 19 Stadiums
- 8 Players, 4 Online for regular match
- 7 players, 8 online for Become a Legend
- The Spanish commentators are great
- For kit editing, add images for Logos AND sponsors
- Share replays with friends through the Internet

The good:
“The Saga has reached a level of simulation that is hard to improve on”
“Smoother animations but Mechanical”

Conclusion:
“The Saga has made a huge step forward, although it has not yet found the ’sweet spot’ on the new consoles”
The Bad:
“The game engine is stuck on last year’s, with improvements”
“Fewer Licenses”

The general feeling of the reviewer is that aside the graphics and Licenses which are better in FIFA, the ‘legendary’ playability of PES remains.
It would be nice to have the review of FIFA that is in the same magazine.

Graphics: 90
Sound: 91
Longevity: 95
Fun: 92

Overall: 92

First official review from Spannish magazine called Hobby Consolas

You guys can **** this game off as much as you want. Even though how poor PES2008 was and how Konami still haven't really made a huge effort this generation, PES is still a fun game to me when made correctly.

It sounds like the online will be as good as it was before PES2008.

In my opinion, FIFA and PES offer different experiences and I will probably pick PES up after FIFA if it gets some more good reviews and also better ones from more credible sources.

Champions League license is pretty cool, and it says that all 32 teams are licensed, so if this source is correct then Arsenal and Chelsea should also have full kits.

They better release a demo before release though.

Bang on!

I hate the PES followers mis-guided belief you can score from 30 yards, just like that on fifa. If I'm on honest its easier to do that on PES with scholes or stevie g.

You must learn to play fifa and then suddenly you're in a whole new world. PES is just so simplistic and basic, it hurts. It does have it's benefit as far a pick up and play prior to going out on the beers, with my mates.
