How much was your car worth?

I looked at a few 530i sports and anything below £5k was dodgy (shedloads of owners or no sh)

I agree 100% - I wouldnt want to buy a sub £5k one because they all have various things wrong with them and mine is utterly mint, has 500 quids worth of premium tyres on it, full BMW SH and all the main failure points attended to. To the right person, (ie me if I was buying again) mine would be worth more than this. Most 530i's will need a grand or two spending to bring them up to scratch, mine doesn't.

BUT...

How do you attract them? Most people wont call about a 150k mile car if its miles more than all the other shabby ones. They'll never know its mint because they'll never even pick up the phone.

It's worth more to me than it'll ever be worth to somebody else, I knew this when I bought it. I'm applying for various jobs at the moment some of which will require travelling. Why buy a diesel when I can pile miles on a worthless yet awesome car like the 530i? I'm going to retrofit the Nav next year :)

that's pretty sweet. which merc do you use more/prefer?

I am using them fairly equally as i dont want either to sit unused.

CLS is smaller and handles much much better, has more modern equipment, and looks more modern externally.

S-class is more refined, the gearbox is smoother, the engine is miles better/smoother, and it has loads of miles on it already so i dont mind piling more onto it.

Downside is the CLS is 50% more economical.

To put them into OCUK BMW terms, the CLS is more like a 5-series or perhaps a 6-series (a bit bigger and more luxurious than a 5, but it doesnt feel like a barge like a 7-series). The S-class is even more of a barge than a 7-series or an A8, its the ultimate waft-mobile.

My dad's old car. To cut a long story short, this car was sitting in the corner of the drive looking sorry for itself not being used, i said i'll take it to save him the bother of selling it as he was going to give me some cash anyway.

Nice one. I know I'd have done the same, rather than take cash. Love the CLS.

Scorpio Cosworth - 1997

£28k new.
£900 bought for.
Worth £1100 now (well, that's what I got offered for it last week).

Anything with a Cosworth badge on it starts getting more expensive after 10yrs if it's in good nick.

also everytime you post on an internet forum you can say cosworth or cossie with no mention of the actual car and people assume you have something really special ;)

Just bought the van, Fiat Doblo Cargo.

New, a shade over £7k.
I paid £3250 but I have to service it and MOT it soon so say £3.5k (It's 3 years old).
Value, with 12months T&T and the condition it's in I would say £4k, it's a buyers market right now though.

The Mondeo I just sold...

New: £16.5k
I bought it 2.5 years ago for £800. (It was 8 years old when I bought it).
I piled on 30k miles and spent only servicing/consumables in that time and sold it for £325.

How much did you buy it for? About £13000, however it had loads of parts that I've since sold getting me a return of about £3500 in total.

Has anyone managed to get a value now that is greater than when the car was new? If anyone has a car that is old enough (inflation), or prestigious enough it could be possible!

edit: I think we should start a league table to see who's the biggest loser!*

* in terms of £££s lost, that's not saying that someone who bought a badly depreciating car is necessarily a loser. :)
