Server naming compition

At home I name my machines after cities of the world. Machines in the same room are named after cities from the same continent. The bedroom is Europe and the living room is Africa, for instance. Laptops are named after Mediterranean islands. The file server rig in the corner of the basement is called McMurdo after the largest Antarctic base. :p

At my most previous IT job servers were named after characters from the X-Files; Mulder, Sculley, SmokingMan, Skinner, etc. :D

We're using capital cities that we've been to - it's actually quite hard and won't last very long.

Following on with the silly names, how about Workstation :p

S-xxx-yyy-zzz01

where xxx is the company name abbreviated to 3 letters, yyy is the office location in 3 letters, and zzz is the purpose:

S-PDG-LON-DC01 For domain controller 1 in the London office of paradigital.net UK

Anyone who names a computer/server/workstation in an office environment with a non-descriptive naming convention is a choad of utmost magnitude.

Quite true, in business environments I despise those who use 'creative' naming conventions...
