Grand Theft Auto 4

Not wanting to sound like a herald of doom or anything... but I think the DRM just killed my DVD drive...

Game installed fine. Jumped through hoops and signed up with SocialClub and GfW as well as downloading and installing GfW as recommended by SocialClub (although the XP hotfix for the GfW links to a 404). Activated serial and tried to launch game...

First I got:
seculauncher: failed to start application [2000]

Now getting told there's no disc inserted and Windows Explorer just hangs or acts as though there is no disc in the drive if I swap disc in there. Will have to test with another drive from the office tomorrow. Been looking forward to this all day - what a ####ing let down.

Why do you guys keep going on about how much a pc will cost to run this?!

I don't think it'll require an expensive PC, but it'll certainly benefit from an upgrade from the likes of 7900gtxs/1950xts that quite a few people have on this forum. Personally i would say if you're going to upgrade for a game, this isn't it.

I take it you are console fanbois

No, i play on my PC too

if you were a proper pc gamer you would already know its an expensive hobby.

If you were a proper gamer at all you would know its very possible to enjoy a game on less than the highest setting and it's very possible to keep your PC up to spec for very little money. I've only spent £150 in the past year for a 8800GT and my computer runs everything just fine.

Are you just jealous that the pc comunity now gets to play your illustrious gta4?

No, it's not very good, you can have it.

If you are then back down as this was the birth place for gta and its only right that its finally coming home.

*gurn*

I'm guessing you're annoyed as we will have better features.

If you mean a better framerate and less blurry graphics, see my previous post, there's far more wrong with GTAIV than the shoddy framerate and graphics demonstrated on the consoles.

I don't care how well it runs at max detail, since when did a gta game actually have ground breaking graphics. Its always been about the gameplay and the brilliant stories.

Yet again, see previous post. The storyline is lackluster, the character development is contradictory and the missions are repetitive.

Once I get it dl'ed later I'll finally be able to play a game I've waited along time for and then I will pass judgement.

Some people enjoyed it, hopefully you'll be one of them. If you're like me and end up hating it i very much recommend saints row 2, its more similar to the older GTA games than IV is.

As a side note, aimed at no one specific, i once again see people on this sub forum insulting console owners for no apparent reason. Some people seem to think they are superior for limiting themselves to one gaming platform which just puzzles me. Those people should ponder this however; you never see people in the console gaming section getting personal and slagging off PC users, yet you waste your time doing it, maybe you need to chill out and accept that both are fantastic platforms for gaming and get on with some actual gaming instead.

Had a quick go. Played it at 1920 x 1200. PC in sig. Get around 40+ FPS. Nothing wrong with this game, however, nor can I see any noticeable graphical upgrades we've been promised. Anyway, I look forward playing it since the controls on the PS3 drove me nuts.

laters.

It won't kill the DVD drive, just something to prevent Windows for accessing it properly. Restart the PC and I bet if you put in another disc in their, another game disc or music cd etc, it will work.

I have this rig:

Ultima OC HD 4870 X2" Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz @ 3.30GHz+ Quad Core DDR2 System

And I'm about to run the game in low to see if it is playable, no I am not kidding. Found other forums and apparently the performance issue is widespread!

did you read any of this thread? lol

Good on ya

I am a proper pc gamer have you not seen my games list?! £150 can buy a 360? It is still expensive

No, it's not very good, you can have it.

Thats what you feel not everyone else.

32 player multi player and the video function.

Again a personal feeling.

I actually would own all 3 consoles if I had the money but I don't as I spend it all on decorating refurbing a house. I spent a lot on this PC a while back. And I'm simply defending pc gaming from the likes that come into the pc gaming section and start bad mouthing a game I will jude myslef instead of have your view forced on me.

This is just embarrassing so far.

Finished downloading the game, installed it along with all the ancillary crap that's required.

Now I get this error: GTA IV FATAL ERROR: RMN40.

I've tried the potential workaround whereby you don't log into Rockstar Social Club, but to no avail.

Absolutely pathetic. Anyone else getting this? I am on Vista SP1 NOT XP, so the problem is not that I need to update XP to SP3...

Dont know if you've been reading this thread, but it appears to me that the PC gamers are bad mouthing this game not console gamers.

jeesus, lets all just try and love one another! Apart from R*, not sure they deserve much love from anyone.

Anyhoo, at least I just bought a Q6600 rather than an E8400, or do we think other games aren't going to be going down the same road? The most worrying thing is that if this sells, then we're going to get more bad ports (especially as PC harware upgrades over the next couple of years mean developers have to make even less effort), and if it doesn't sell, as mentioned above, the PC will be seen to be dying off as a gaming platform.

Right, I'm off to go and play Dune 2, or maybe Tie Fighter, they're still fine on my 486sx20, I just need to put the mouse driver in upper memory.......

you sound quite angry, calm down :)

i'm one who's miffed at the spec for this game, and I'd class myself as a pc gamer.

sure my spec isn't out of this world

q6600@3ghz
8gb ddr2
8800gt

but if it can say L4D at all settings on max and have awesome fps, why can't they get gta4 to be at least on the same playing field

Because there's thousands more things going on at any one time? Euphoria alone uses a bumload of processing I imagine..
