PC gaming - I'm a bit disappointed

I think PC gaming at the moment is dead.

Nothing even taking my fancy worth an upgrade. Bring up some amazing MP game, Quake 3 days :(

I know the 'PC gaming is dead' argument is contentious and emotive.

What I do know is things have moved on from the days of Quake III and Unreal Tournament 2003/2004, which were designed for the PC from the ground up, which meant they were great games. And still are to this day, December 2008, years after they were made.

Sad really when their successors, Quake 4 and UT3 are so crap.

:(

(yes I do feel nostalgic for the early 2000s when the PC was king, rather than now when it is a distant second to consoles)

It sucks dosen't it, we're living off ports :(

i mean come on, anyone with half a nonce would know that NFS releases these days suck regardless of format, and as for GTA VI do you not read PC forums ? maybe next time think of a better thread title that refers to your problem and not suggest a sweeping generalization to the state of PC Gaming!!

Good games you could have purchased ? Dead Space .. Tomb Raider Underworld .. Fallout3 .. Left4Dead

its xmas have a

:D

The Tomb Raider demo didn't grab me, nor did Left4Dead.

I haven't tried the other two. I'm not a fan of RPGs and Fallout 3 has mixed player reviews. Based on my experience of trying and failing to enjoy other popular RPGs I doubt I would like it. Dead Space, perhaps but again reviews suggest it was designed with consoles in mind and PCs secondarily.

Have you tried Left 4 Dead DD ?
Awesome game in every sense of the word & you'll run it with everything maxed out as smooth as silk.
Best game I've played online in years.

Crysis et al is the only game I can think of that hasn't been on console because they don't have the power to run it. We need more games like this to make PC gaming more appealing again (coming from a PC gamer btw).

The 9600GT is still a perfectly good gaming card. I know it shouldnt happen, but GTA IV and Undercover are both **** poor PC ports (and yeah, it doesnt help PC gamings image). Its downhearting i know, but there are plenty of other recent games that shine on the PC (Left 4 Dead, Red Alert 3, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 etc) and will look great on your system :).

tried Stalker? once you get used to it, you're hooked

PS bioshock was not crap, i liked that game, maybe not as good as the hype, but you are a bit harsh to call it crap

Probably harsh I suppose yeah. I did play through quite a bit of it, and enjoyed it for a while. But then I realised it was very repetitive and boring. The whole city under the sea thing, circa 1950s, was very clever though.

X3 Terran Conflict is pretty good though that too has some issues and needs a patch or gameplay tweak. I'll be returning to it in the New Year after finishing GTA IV.

I seem to be one of the lucky ones with GTA IV (apart from the Social Club and MS Live nonsense) in that so far it's running without a hitch and with a performance I'm finding satisfactory, if not exactly the level of detail I would expect from my rig.

Football Manager 2009 is also okay though bumped by GTA IV for the moment.

I see the PC as a platform for the "long haul" games. I've got various flight/transport sims on there which you can always spark up if nothing else appeals at a particular time. In addition to the above, I've got Far Cry 2 and COD WOW to finish.

So far from being dead I would suggest PC gaming is booming. Don't let a couple of borked releases persuade you otherwise.

world in conflict, age of conan, witcher were other PC exclu that were pretty good. in the end not many games live up to the hype, not even on console - high expectations may be why you are disappointed. but still enjoyable

The Witcher
Crysis (Am only playing this now on an x1950 and, even if the sliders don't go to max without resulting ni Slideshow Syndrome, it's still a good game and am enjoying it)
Mass Effect
Company of Heroes
Supreme Commander
Bioshock
Fallout 3
Oblivion
World in Conflict

All good games in my opinion. Certainly 2007 was a good year for the PC and 2008, in my eyes, hasn't been but there are some brilliant games out there for the PC. It's a shame that GTA IV is performing so poorly as I was really looking forward to it but there are some great releases in the near future including:

Empire: Total War
Dawn of War 2
Prince of Persia
Diablo III
Starcraft II
FEAR 2

and you never know, maybe even Episode Three before the end of the decade.

There's also GOG.com for some classic gaming to fill in the gaps.

In the case of NFS, consoles = 30fps = ugh.

In the case of GTA, consoles = poor controls. AND 30fps (ugh)! ;)

I would rather have 30fps on the consoles against 15-25 on my pc.
I have a 4 core Phenom and a 8800gtx graphics card and both those games are not very good with fps.
At least GTA is pretty good on the 360.
What i am amazed at is that Midnight Club on the 360 has next to no slowdown and its a big open world city like GTA with hundreds of cars and also people on the streets.
It also has weather effects and time effects and runs much better than GTA.
It might be that Rockstar learned a lot when they made GTA.

PC gaming shines at high res imo. I'm running at 1920 by 1200 res on a 28 inch hd monitor which i recently bought and games looks simply amazing it beats the poop outta anything current consoles or hd tv's can offer. Even games that are 2-3 years old still look amazing.

I really didnt think high res would be a huge differance but it is, when ever you see high res screenshots it really doesnt do it any justice you have to see it in action.

If i was you and i was gaming at that res i would stick to consoles as it seems your more into console type games the pcs games anyways.

I doubt it's the video card - I have a 9600GT and it runs everything maxed at 1280x1024....Far Cry 2, Bioshock, etc. Of course, what you consider to be playable might be different to me.

Always makes me chuckle when people call a particular video card a "weak link" when they don't even ask what res it's being used for :o

Pc gaming might not be as strong as it used to be but it still provides a better experience compared to consoles
