Please read if you have a noisy PS3...

My PS3 fans really kick off when I'm playing video files. So annoying as it becomes the loudest thing in my room. You get used to it after a minute though. Guess I've gained the ability to ignore noise after my PC and Xbox360, but still, it annoys me when people say their PS3's are whisper quiet and mine drowns out both my PC and Xbox360 :(.

Same and the Fanboys always say that the PS3 is whisper quiet, true until about 6 months later it starts sounding like a 747. Really annoying when it comes to playing Blu-Rays later on a night time as you have to turn the bloody sound up to hear what people are saying which isn't a good idea as my folks always seems to go to bed early. I have tried using cans of compressed air but to no avail, it worked for about 5 mins or so and it was back to square one.

Last night I took apart my PS3 to fit a 19-blade NMB Tech fan which I got hold of from the bay... in short - it didn't work :( still idling at level 3, very irritating!

I did do a little experiment though. I spread some AS5 on both the Cell and RSX chips in a thick coat, and then "etched" a criss cross pattern into it with a paper clip. I then mounted the heatsink on as tightly as I could and left it for a while. When I removed the heatsink I found that the criss cross pattern was stilly clearly present over most of the central area of the RSX chip. I.e. the heatspreader is probably concave and making crap contact :(

Dunno if it's worth trying to find someone to lap it, or if I should just give up and stick it on the bay... I'm really attached to my launch console!

Cheers,

Suman

Unlucky mate, is there a substantial amount of dust that is inside the PS3 that is causing our machines to act like 747's? That is the only reason that I can think that they are running as loud because when I first had my PS3 it ran flawlessly without and noise coming from the unit whatsoever.

It's nothing to do with fanboys, the vast majority are very quiet.

If your console is still in warranty, contact Sony and with a bit of effort they should really offer to repair or replace the console.

Sandpaper mate, work through some grits until 2000, really easy. Just use an ultra flatblock and youll see where the curvature is as the metal is stripped. If its still noisey sell it and get a lower manufacturing process PS3 as theyre whisper quiet (without being a fanboy).

my 40gb one i got around the time mgs4 come out, doesn't have the loud fan, but that part you've circled is quite warm (warmer than the rest)

Indeed. My first one was excellent. My second one loud. My third one started quieter than the second (not as quiet as the first) and now is louder than the second.

It goes to show there is quite a lot of variation between them and something must cause them to be loud.

Sounds very time-consuming :( where would I get an ultra flat block from?

Does anyone in/near Nottingham want to do it for me please? :p lol

Wow, 3 PS3's? What happened with those mate?

I would contact Sony but alas I bought it the day after release so it is way out of warranty. Will just have to put up with the noise I suppose.

First 2 died. First one had a dodgy GPU, the second one had the drive stop reading correctly.

Only had the 1 die, GPU error (1 RRoD) which was killed by a member here.

Considering gaming time on each system my PS3's have been rather poor.

I've taken mine apart 3 times so far and it still works :p (/me touches wood)

What are you doing to your poor consoles Nokkon?!

I have a 60GB model that I got second hand but I believe it's a launch day or thereabouts.

Seems quite silent even when gaming, you can hear the fan kick in but it's not irritating nor intrusive.

Certainly NO worse than my 40GB, and it has an extra chip to keep cool. :)

How easy is it to open up the PS3 just to blow the dust out? Dont really want to reseat anything - just give it a good clean...

ps3ud0
