I don't think that someone unable to update windows to the latest SP will enjoy debian very much

No. Docx is a word 2007 document. It has nothing to do with vista at all.
Delete the x off the filename extension?
That'd be Office 2007 miss, not Vista![]()
I know what it is, I thought they were backwards compatible though. I'm sure I've opened a docx file in Office 2003 just by going to file > open.
Can you run Office <2007 in Vista? Not tried.
I'm a linux user. I can't stand the user experience with MS products and MS's attitude to its users.![]()
Are you using readyboost? That caused loads of bsods for me useless programmers.
I'm currently going insane trying to get Linux to work on my mum's new computer. It won't display anything over 800x600 which is a pig seeing as I've forked out for a 19" monitor. Never had a problem with Vista, it's wonderful to come back on the laptop and use something that works!

You'd rather have a blue screen of death every 5 minutes than googling about to fix that one problem. If so you'd best stick to XP
I'm sure you haven't!![]()
Then you have the Microsoft Office 2007 System Compatibility Pack For Office 2003 installed.
This allows docx (and xlsx, pptx, mdbx) to be opened (by on the fly conversion) in office 2003.

Fixed.
I'm not using IE, and the very easy to find link that Jez helpfully handed to you on a plate works fine for me.
Do a search for system32, then delete that folder. You should be up and running after that, it's a common problem with Vista.
