Why I hate vista...

BB, to clarify - office 2007 saves in .docx standard by default. Nothing whatsoever to do with vista, office 2007 is available for XP too. If you open it in 2007 and go "save as" you can save as .doc if you want to.

BB, you can download a patch to open/use it within 2003 (if that's what you're using) from the Microsoft website.

I know what it is, I thought they were backwards compatible though. I'm sure I've opened a docx file in Office 2003 just by going to file > open.

Then you have the Microsoft Office 2007 System Compatibility Pack For Office 2003 installed.

This allows docx (and xlsx, pptx, mdbx) to be opened (by on the fly conversion) in office 2003.

I'm currently going insane trying to get Linux to work on my mum's new computer. It won't display anything over 800x600 which is a pig seeing as I've forked out for a 19" monitor. Never had a problem with Vista, it's wonderful to come back on the laptop and use something that works!

Can you run Office <2007 in Vista? Not tried.

I'm a linux user. I can't stand the user experience with MS products and MS's attitude to its users. :)

you know MS created an add on that once installed, allows office 2007 docx documents to be opened in earlier MS Word versions right?

You'd rather have a blue screen of death every 5 minutes than googling about to fix that one problem. If so you'd best stick to XP

I'm sure you haven't! :p

The problem with that is there is so many bloody flavours of Linux, and on top of that everyone has largely customised installs, if a fix works for one person, it may very well not work for you.

gotcha.

whilst on the subject, anyone else prefer office 2003 to 2007? the menus just seem easier to use..

I don't get a BSOD every 5 minutes, never had one in Vista.

I've been trying to get Linux working for weeks, I'm just waiting till payday and if it's not working by then I'll be buying another copy of Vista instead.

I would not be surprised if I had more computer knowledge than you..

When I purchase a laptop to simply work out of the box(Auto updates are meant to be on) I expect it to perform flawlessly. I can't be bothered to be dealing with driver errors and BSOD'S..

I'm not using IE, and the very easy to find link that Jez helpfully handed to you on a plate works fine for me.

Have since used that link thanks :)

Do a search for system32, then delete that folder. You should be up and running after that, it's a common problem with Vista.

O'rly? is there a short cut? Someone told me using a powerful magnet over the hard drive cures these issues too...? Something to do with EMP waves destroying and messing with the 1s n 0's dat so alls I gotta do is sets them straight?

I don't think that someone unable to update windows to the latest SP will enjoy debian very much :p

You would be surprised :)

I only switched back to windows after Open Office half destroyed my A-level coursework and a presentation due to some compatibility issues :p
