Your Top 5 Guitar Riffs?

You really don't listen to much metal then do you. Metal as a genre is massive and you're trying to claim it's all just noise?

Way to be narrow-minded there.

Technically, all music is just noise ;)

I appreciate that metal musicians are often skilled, but they don't need to be to play metal.

However, my response was aimed at someone having a go at my choice purely on the fact that (it appeared) there was no metal in it. Even though I'd proclaim Led Zep as fathers of metal. Certainly had a big hand in the way it is made today.

I would say (obviously) that my choice is the best here (else I wouldn't have chosen it) and all he's done is proclaim it as rubbish. Then he goes on to list 5 pieces of music from the same genre. Way to go! Who exactly is the more narrow-minded of the two of us?

Thin Lizzy - Boys are back in town
Thin Lizzy - Whisky in the jar
Stone Roses - She bangs the drums
AC/DC - Thunderstruck
Electric Six - Gaybar, for its infectious simplicity

In no particular order:

Megadeth - Tornado of Souls - Riff fest - pick one
Slayer - Raining Blood
Slayer - South of heaven
Metallica - Seek and Destroy
Iron Maiden - The Trooper

You said that all metal was rubbish. Then Johno Please said your list was rubbish -- I don't really think he had a problem with your list, just your opening comment. You jumped on an opportunity to get a dig in at metal, Johno Please digged back.

Then it devolved into "my list is better than urs, lol".

This is a predominantly metal thread, rightly or wrongly. Either ignore it completely, or take the returning jabs on the chin and stop trying to appear innocent.

Wasn't my intention to start an argument over which is best, at the end of the day everyone's choice is as different as is everyone's taste in music - I'm sure you'll agree regardless of your music taste narrowing down your 5 favourites is quite hard?

It does strike me that you can roughly gauge a members age from their choice though ;)

I wouldn't class Mr Knopfler as a metal head - but then see above :p

Really hard question! I'll probably revise this but (in no particular order):

Crazy train - Black Sabbath
Paint it Black - Rolling Stones
Ain't talking 'bout love - Van Halen
Raining Blood - Slayer
Hurt - Johnny Cash (I think NIN did it originally but I like his better)

edit: I would've put Stepping Stone by Hendrix in but that's not really a riff but awesome freeform type guitar playing matching his singing with a kick *** solo!

I was talking about Gilly/Johno's exchange, not the thread as a whole, which has actually been pretty cool.

As to the difficulty of choosing 5, I agree and already commented on how hard it was to pick 5 in my list. In fact, if you look, I actually picked 6. Could have added another 10 without thinking.

Yeah, I know he isn't. I said "predominently metal". Just look at the tracks people have been posting, they are predominently metal, theres no two ways about it. I'm not saying this thread should be full of metal (it shouldn't, for the sake of variety), but metal takes the lions share of guitar riffs and that is being reflected in this thread. That's simply the way it is.

*metal = thrash, grunge, hard rock, dark, power snazz, cincinatti ankle slam
