I would 'preciate some advice....

I want to get GTA4 but i'm concerned it'll be a stuttering mess!

My PC is pretty low specc'ed tbh:

AMD64 X2 4800+....cannot O/c due to my poxy Skt 939 Asus A8NE-FM!!
2Gb DDR400 RAM
BFG G92 8800GT OC2

I play on a 17" TFT at 1152x864 res and the GFX card gives pretty amazing performance until this (i suspect).

What're my chances of it being playable/reasonably smooth at low res/settings?

So what you're saying is a quad is a must for the game??

I only ask as im tempted by the title and run an e4500 @2.93Ghz & 8800GTX.

Assume this will run it poorly as well??

p.s. sorry to hijack!

By "perfectly well", I either assume you have it in some cruddy low res, have the video options turned right down, or are happy with <30fps.

Swapping my CPU out for a dualie killed it.

Hmm. I guess i'll leave it a few months and see if R* come up with anything to optimise it better. Annoying really, as a PC which meets the minimum spec should play it reasonably well with low settings, etc.

I won't hold my breath though!

I have the resolution set to the default of my 'cruddy' Samsung 226BW 1680 X 1050. Texture quality is set to medium and render quality is set to high. I have view distance on 50 and detail distance on 50 also. Ok, I know it won't play as well with everything on high and on 100 but it's perfectly playable. I also don't doubt that a quad core will give better framerates but I was just giving an alternative viewpoint to 'it'll play like ****'. ;)

Those are decent settings. What GPU do you have by the way? 1GB graphics mem?

i've not seen one good performing X2 with this game

high end dual core intel's tend to work ok if they're overclocked like the clappers

A 8800 GT 512 MB. The only thing I have really low is shadow density which I think is set to 5.:) I'm not trying to start an arguement here just my experience. I preordered the game months ago and was sure it wouldn't play very well on my system but I have been pleasantly surprised. I have had a couple of crashes to desktop which is a pain as it takes an age to load the game up again.:(

EDIT: I just checked my settings again and I made a mistake with the detail distance, it's actually set to 30.:)

Mine runs fine on my dual core, above 42 fps average and i dont notice any slowdown what so ever.

Running in 1680x1050

Textures = Medium
Rendering = High
View Distance = 27
Detail Distance = 40
Vehicles = 26
Shadows = 3

thats on a e8400 @ 3.8ghz, 4gb ram, ati 4850 512mb

Shame its a buggy game.

Quite frankly then, I don't beleive you get playable (35+) framerates at those settings.

ive said a million times as well, mines running great, no stuttering, no low fps with medium textures and high rendering and its doing so at 2560 x 1600. and thats on a E6600, rest of the spec is in sig

I had a system with a higher spec than yours and it wasn't smooth. Whats your secret?

Your attitude confuses me, what part of 'I don't want to start an arguement' didn't you understand? Are you calling me a liar? I don't know what frame rate I'm getting as I haven't checked but it seems playable to me.:confused:

Perhaps you have low standards? I've often heard people say a game is playable on their PC yet when you have a car it's verging on a slideshow.s

No idea tbh mate, performance actually got better on native res which was odd, I didn't set view distance to anything insane (37) but view detail was about 50 iirc, Its running at 40FPS + anyway though.

You have a similarish system to me. It WILL run but it WILL also look like dog **** on your shoe. It will look worse than the Xbox version and possibly worse than the graphics on GTA:SA PC.
