Grand Theft Auto 4

Not sure if it applies to you steam buyers, but there is a shortcut in the GTAIV folder from my retail version that is titled 'revoke activation'.

I have it on Steam and it doesn't seem to be there. I wonder if the /revoke still works anyway.

Why the need for it I wonder, when I thought there was no limit on activations?

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" /revoke

what does revoking the license actually do?

In games like BioShock with a specified number of activations, the revoke tool is self explanatory but I would like to know the point of it for a game which supposedly has unlimited activations.

I ran fraps and noticed that the cutscenes (the widescreen ones only) are locked at 32fps. They are also blurrier than the rest of the game. The full screen cutscenes run at normal game speed and are sharper. Pretty weird.

They do this with the UE3 games and it's awful.

I'd say they initially wanted the game to have say 3 or 5 activations with the ability to revoke at will. Then they probably changed their mind and set it to unlimited. It'll be a simply switch on the activation server.

someone please help me get my saved game back :( I've got my files but when I copy them into saved game it just starts from the first mission

Let it start the game, once it has hit escape, scroll along to game and use the load option. Just guessing but worth a try if you havent already.

I had to format my computer tonight and I was 60% done on GTA 4 so I backed up my game from "Documents" and from "Local User" but when I start the game it just starts from the first mission :(

Any help?

When you start the game, click escape, click 'game', then click load....Are they showing up there?

Blast, beaten.

I got an error trying to install this :(

I'll post up specifically what it is later :)

Installing cod5 now, and got fallout 3 to get through aswel!

Just a screenie for you guys. I can post the settings that is at if you're interested. This is running about 30fps on my spec in sig (i'm amazed!). This is with all updates and the 180.84 betas. I also used -availablevidmem 1.5 and boosted the settings to around 375 mb (on my 320mb card) and it's perfectly playable.

About the revoking of activation - R* have said the installs are unlimited, but I've heard people over on the gtaforums complaining about only have 3-5 activations. It is sorted by a call, but it's nice to avoid that. Perhaps R* have corrected this, I can't say yet, and I won't be testing it out!

Wouldn't mind seeing the settings your using. I have basically the same spec as yours and that shot looks fairly decent and basically like the consoles (which i don't mind).

LOL, i actually got a hard on in the strip club with a private dance, she did look a bit like one of my mates though who i wouldn't mind having a private dance off either.

Ok, here's another:

The screenshot looks a bit pants now due to jpeg compression (just used paint, dont have photoshop installed atm), but you can get the idea. It runs smooth and it actually looks a lot better in motion, i'm sure a lot of the players on here have noticed that.

Note i'm using -availablevidmem 1.5
Res is 1680x1050
The textures are Medium
Render quality is high

Sliders are 8, 31, 40, 0

Think that's everything. Reckon i'll be upgrading to a GTX260 in a month or so, so i'll re-upload new pics when that happens. I'm still very happy with the performance on my machine, with there being so many horror stories in this thread!

Ok now I'm impressed, is that with the blur filter off aswell?

Yeah that horrible blur filter is off all the time, I think it looks naff with it on. I would say I was one of the lucky ones, but there must be a reason why it runs well on some people's rigs. The game seems to like 8800s above GT, not sure if that's anything.

I would love to see AA in the game, but my card would definitely explode if I tried it, so i'd have to get a new one for that. I noticed the visual quality improves a lot when you extend the draw distance. Mine is on just 8, as that gives good quality/performance for my card, but above looks nicer still. Oh, and low textures looked terrible, so I had to use medium at least, I bet high looks a good deal better too. I did O/C my CPU to 3ghz but it didnt seem to have much of an impact, so i'd guess i'm GPU-limited at the moment. I don't believe the game needs a quad core to run well.
