Autistic teenager kicked baby in the face

Obviosly you cant charge somebody who doesnt know what there doing but surely if he is a danger to the public then he should be imprisoned under the mental health act?

and im sorry if its wrong but knee jerk reaction would have caused me to hit him

As has been said by some others, his carers should be held responsible. If he cannot go out without getting angry/attacking small children, he should be institutionalised for the safety of the public. A severely autistic man grabbed my wife in a corner and was trying to tell her about his day and his carer basically 'joined in' telling her that it was ok cos he was only telling her about his McDonalds lunch. He bruised my wife's wrists he was holding her that hard. If I had been there, I would have intervened, regardless of mental impairment. My wife is a Paediatrics nurse in a hospic btw and is used to dealing with conditions like this and even she was uncomfortable.

What does that have to do with anything? That just means i'm lazy. Or is there going to be a mollycoddling special version of laziness with which kids can get sympathy and have excuses for doing crap at school.

Not at all, there are kids there with the ability, but there are hurdles for them... Why force a kid to write when a laptop can be used and actually benefits them as they are a lot faster typists at the end of school :) I'd say it was a benefit and playing to someone's strengths rather than punishing them for a weakness....

Also, it's a statistic that says Dyslexics are more creative... so let them draw, it's not laziness, it's their strength :)

The autistic boy I was supporting had fantastic numeracy and spelling skills along with a high level of IT (for his age). His verbal and social skills weren't fantastic, but in no way was he lazy, all i did was help to focus him on the tasks, rather than let him get distracted, at this point he'd sometimes "overload" and get rewind moments where he got aggitated.

Oh, is tourette's just a reason for someone to swear ? And if so does that mean every idiot in the pub on friday night suffers from it?

I didn't say everyone was lazy, and i'm not talking about all mental illnesses ( my first post was a little brash). I believe however that a lot of modern conditions (mostly education related) are complete rubbish. I have had many chats with my mum over this who, as i have said, is a special needs teacher and we both come to the same conclusion.

You won't change my mind. I know i'm right :D

I hate to say it but Jono8 does speak some truth!

Sadly they werent. Plus when the head contacted me after he had investigated they had clearly been caught out. No one was interacting with the children so it wasnt a school trip, they were just out to fill their trollies.
As I said there would be uproar if this happened in a "normal" school.

OH NOES SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?!?!!!!?!?!? TEACHERS R COMMITSIN A CRIYME OF THA CENTUREE!!!!!!!

Every single post of yours in this thread is utter tripe.

Yay! Im so glad!

As I already said, unless you have been in the situation of caring for a child with a disability you have no idea what level of care they need.

Would you still be saying that if he had killed the baby?

well yes. however if that was the case he'd probably be committed for a period of time.

But he didn;t so it;s a pointless argument s the judgement wouldn't have been the same would it?

The fact is there is a reason education related disorders are labeled in the first place. The fact research has verifyed the conditions and that they are significant to slow down the development of the individual. As such we treat the conditions as best we can and based on how much we know. You think its right to let someone with a learning disability to not be able to get the same job as a 'normal' person?

No, I am saying that many 'learning disability' are either a person naturally not being as good as another person at a particular thing, or a person not puting as much effort into it as others

I have seen countless examples of this and so has my mum.

add on to that the amount of people cheating the system and you can see that it is becoming ridiculous.

It just gives thick and/or lazy people an easy excuse.

No he's not. He's talking absolute trash. Maybe he should have to raise a kid with autism/Aspergers or meet someone whose severely mentally disabled with one of his so-called 'modern conditions'.

I am not talking about people who are severely mentally disabled. As i have said before, my first post was a little brash.

However I do not believe that people that have aspergers,ADHD,OCD e.t.c. are severely mentally disabled.

You are doing a dis-service to people who ARE actually very mentally ill and arent just a bit wierd or different, or have some funny habits.

Crikey that's such an unfortunate situation. You can't blame the autistic guy because obviously his understanding of boundaries of acceptable behaviour are vastly different to those of a normal person, but at the same time it's such a shame for the poor little baby. :(

I agree. It's one of those grey areas.
The autistic guy is mentally disabled, so he can't be accepted to take responsibility for his actions, as he probably didn't even understand that it was wrong.
However, surely he should've had someone caring for him, or looking after him, and it would be their responsibility to ensure he was behaving appropriately?
But that baby.. gosh :(

So in this case, what would have happened if the father went berzerk and punched the kid to the ground? Would charges have been brought against him?

Any law buffs care to answer that one for me please?. Its a genuine question not making a point or anything!
