Windows 7 beta - 9th January

Is Avira Antivirus working for anyone else? It installed OK and appears to be updating but Win7 reports that there is no AV installed.

Sorry for the stupid question, but would if I installed Windows 7 32 bit would I use vista 32 bit drivers for my network adaptor, chipset, and ATI drivers ?

I installed the 64bit and my Belkin F5D7050 uk wireless adaptor won't work as there are no 64bit driver available, and i'm not running a cable down stair or moving my pc. So scrap the 64 bit version.

I'm assuming that with my rig i wouldn't make use of the 64bit capabilities anyway, So would it be best to install the 32bit version ?

Also I've had no problems in getting keys for each product from MS or downloading them, although its been slow !

Rig is as follows,

Intel E2180 at 3.2Ghz
2 Gb of OCZ Platinum 6400
Using an 0ld 80gb sammy spinpoint for Windows 7
Asus P5E X38
Corsair 620HX
ATI 3870 512mb PCS

I did a ghost of my Vista 64 and installed Win7 on my Raid0 setup over the weekend to try it out.

All in all very good. Transfer rates seem to be better with a 10% increase especially with files over 1Gb. X-FI Extreme Audio drivers installed no problems but I did have to run them in Vista mode to install. ATI beta drivers installed without a hitch. God, even the chipset drivers for the motherboard installed but had to run them in Vista mode. Not an issue really.

The 3 problems I did come across were no support for Punkbuster. Antivir kepy showing as not started which worried me a little as I was unsure if the OS was still protected even though it showed as not turned on. I tried Kaspersky but kept getting blue screens so uninstalled it. WMP is still quite buggy for me. It would not let me include watching my video folder for sharing/streaming avi's through the 360 no matter what I did. I had to manually drag the files over into WMP. WMP in Vista has no issues with this. However, I have not got into the Homeshare side of things and so that could have been the problem.

The actual layout of the GUI is pretty impressive but I kind of prefer the Vista layout a little better. When I choose my username folder in the start menu, it takes me to the library instead of the actual username folder. Not entirely sure why.

Until a few of these bugs have been ironed out and the possibility of Punkbuster being created (even in beta mode but we shall see) then I shall keep to Vista 64 as a main OS.

Apart from that I am a very happy bunny with it. :D

32bit would be a better choice for you and probably less hassle with drivers. As you have 2Gb of memory, the true potential of the 64bit OS would not shine as much as if you had 4Gb memory.

Installed on my works laptop yesterday, so far so good, the taskbar is going to take soem getting used to, but liking it so far, pity it is still memory hungry like Vista :(

It's such a shame that your OS actually uses the RAM you bought, it's ridiculous!

Windows 7 uses 2GB of my 8GB of RAM on start up! I better take out some RAM so windows 7 uses less!

Any memory it uses is instantly reallocated to another task when it's needed. Like when you load up a game, what was using the RAM while you were idle, is killed and the RAM is then reallocated to the game, instantly.

It would be nice to know the true minimum though for considering pagefile swapping effects, you dont want that in a game

(These instructions are for Vista as I don't have 7 in front on me, but I think they're the same anyway).

Go to task manager and go to the performance tab. Look a the physical memory total, take away the cached and you have the memory being 'used' by running processes.

Not aimed at you but it frustrates me when people blather on about Vista and complain that they have 0Mb of RAM free. It's designed to do that!

I think it all stems from people wanting to see a huge amount of free RAM, and it gives them a sense of my pc is so uberl33t, look at how much RAM I've got. The higher the amount of unused RAM, the more RAM it looks like you've got.

I think it's bull of course. I bought my RAM because I wanted my PC to be able to use more.

I used 32Bit windows 7 beta for about a week, and I couldn't stand not being able to use more than 3GB of RAM. I had gotten so used to multitasking on a massive level that it was painful not being able to use those extra 5GBs.

Now in 64Bit, it feels so much nicer to use.

Oh, to clarify, I used Vista 64Bit SP1 before moving over to windows 7 64Bit 6801, then to Windows 7 32bit 7000.

firewall suggestions people ?

Suggestions in what way?

I had some 'issues' with it blocking stuff without asking me. I couldn't host any source games on line.

Sorted that out easily enough though by just allowing it.

I'd be interested to hear some tips on it my self though.

Hi Baz, please, please, please do some research about the memory management in Windows Vista and thus, you will see why they have kept it pretty much the same in Windows 7. :)

That isn't my complaint, I meant when Windows has started, XP used to use 200MB of memory on startup, Vista was about 800MB, as is W7..

Er, I do know about the memory management in Vista, it is one of the good things about it...
