Windows 7 beta - 9th January

One of my 64Bit gets as far as starting 'expanding files' and comes up with some error or other, and another disc I burnt comes up with the same error after it gets to about 30% of 'expanding files'. :(

Was same for me until i chaged the burning app to imgBurn and burnt at half max speed. May have just been a fluke, but images burnt with ashampoo and ISO-burner gave the same errors as you got above.

To continue using your PC, please be prepared to reinstall a prior version of Windows or a subsequent release of Windows 7

So that suggests that there be another beta release before this one runs out then?

Ah, ok. I'll try that, I burnt using Nero at 8x (disc rated to 18x and drive to 24x), I'll do it at like 4x or something, it can take it's time as it's not urgent. :)

What exactly happens on August 1st? Does it just refuse to load, or give occasional warnings similair to when you haven't input a serial in?

It's really annoying that it's not clear at all what happens at the end of the whole thing.

Just expect the worse case scenario where it will simply stop working. I wouldn't worry because there'll be another beta, possibly RC, by the end of spring anyway. And I would expect W7 to be RTM by August anyway.

being that vista's biggest problem is that it grinds old systems to a halt. I thought I woudl do the right thing and test windows 7 on an old system that should struggle.

So the build I chose was my sons old old pc that I happen to still have

Spec

AMD athlon xp2000 (1.67mhz)
1 gig ram
40 gig hard drive
nvidia TI4400 graphics card

my results:-
Installation felt like it was taking a very long time, because there were lotsw of times when there seemed to be no progress. but inm reality it wasnt really much, if any longer than an XP installation.

once i was into widows, I expected the worse to come, but in fairness it actually ran very well, especially considering that there were no graphics card drivers, and it was using the windows standard version.

The lack of G.card drivers has limited what I could test (couldnt test media centre - no tv tuner card - although i do have a usb one to try, not expecting it to work though because of drivers issue)

had a look around for about an hour, and didnt it really didnt feel slugish (unless I was subconciously already accepting that it would be so I didnt notice)

all in all I am quite impressed. I intend to put it on my main machine(once a hdd i just bought from MM arrives) and see how it performs there for a comparrison test

Does anyone have any info on how much this will retail for? Any family-pack discounts?

Also hope they don't decide to follow the Basic, Business, Ultimate versions again.

ran on VM workstation, yeah install felt longer than xp. :(

it seemed quick enough once in the os. but then a fresh install always does.

the taskbar is very big and chunky, not my thing, duno if i can change that?

need to install properly really but as this stage is alittle pointless.

Well the beta that is currently under test is actually 'Windows 7 Ultimate' so i'm assuming it will again be split into different versions.

They're following that again. I've seen at least ultimate and home premiums.

Also, generally, people who use betas and take an active role in submitting feedback and that receive a retail copy when it goes RTM/retail.

You can change it. Just right click on the taskbar > properties > tick use small icons. Also, if you prefer the 'old' way of displaying open programs on the task bar, in grouping, choose group never.

Guys, when I browse 'Games' from the Start menu my system slows right down and eventually hangs? Games is the only folder in the menu that seems to do this, the others are fine :(

I'm running it in VMWare. Any ideas?
