Best 2.1 system around? Find me!

I had this dilemma mid-way through last year. The best 2.1 solution bar a full amp/speaker setup was the AE's and still are for the most part.

I then decided to spend the extra cash and get me a pair of KEF C1 Bookshelf speakers and a cheap Cambridge Audio A1 from the MM. My soundcard is the top dogs Auzentech Meridian and I was blown away by the sound from the amp/speaker setup. A week later I replaced the amp with an Onkyo A-9155. Granted its a 2.0 setup but if done right a sub isn't needed.

assuming money actually is an issue how about a 3.5 mm splitter and plug both into that, getting another sound card and having it play nicely with the on board at the same time should in thoery be fine but they dont always do so

nice one mate, will look into that;)

Please for the love of god don't buy a BOSE system. They are stupidly overpriced, I mean stupidly overpriced, and use low quality materials and drivers in their speakers.

Don't get me started on their surround systems that have gaps in the frequency range meaning you won't even be able to hear certain sound sin games and movies, plus their showrooms have a lot of expensive kit behind the scenes hooked up to said speaker systems, making them sound great in the showroom but a lot less so when you get them home.

Absolute tripe. The first part you wrote may be true depending on your opinion/what your looking for. Their showrooms are not set up in anyway except with plaster and bricks. I put some of them together. Personally i have an older B & W setup at home its fantastic, i also have a Bose Sounddock Portable also fantastic. Stop speaking on things you presume are right, did you actually see all this expensive equipment or did somebody else on the internet tell you this? I no what i think.

Dont get me wrong Bose isn't for everyone. If you want sonically accurate sound buy seperates. But the convenience of some of there products is great (i love my sounddock). I dont mind you having your opinion but why do you have to poopoo every body else, its shows a cetain immaturity.

There is so much negativity in this part of the forums. It's not so much helping as battering opinions into people.

What really doesn't help is that there doesn't seem to be anywhere you can go and actually compare these things side by side, the way you can other sound reproduction equipment.

And then people start comparing specifications, which are almost worthless as they tell you what the device can be measured at, not what you actually hear. At my last hearing test, I was unable to resolve sounds under 21Hz and over 18.7KHz, irrespective of volume, and my hearing was rated as exceptional for a 42 year old. So I actually only need a speaker than can produce 21-18700Hz, anything else is wasted on me.

And then there are the purists and the people who'll pay for style. When I told a few of my friends that I was putting in a Linn distributed system when I built my house, I was roundly criticised for wasting money on 'white goods'. Well, maybe so, but it looks great as well as sounding pretty good. I think there is room for the Razor system in the market, although I wouldn't necessarily spend my own money on them.

I have some Bose stuff too, their reflex ported stuff generates a lot of controlled bass from a very small box, and they also look good in a lifestyle way.

Apple did a great 2.1 system a few years back, and it looked the dogs danglies too. It's just a a shame that at the time I didn't appreciate how good they were, otherwise I would have bought some.

Well I read about that, and could believe it to be honest, as I have heard a BOSE system in a neighbours house and it sounded a bit poop, but I heard a similar system a few years back which sounded quite good in a showroom. It's not apples to apples but it doesn't need to be, I have seen how BOSE products are built and some of the designs. Nothing speical in the slightest, but made out by their marketing drive to do everything a bookshelf can do, but louder and better, all from a little cube a few cm square.

I no what i think.

See above, you think what you will and I will think what I will. No need to get your handbag up, the BOSE products I have heard sound extremely average, not horrible but just very very average. Then you see the price and that average shoots right down to sheer disbelief an horror.

Go and buy BOSE if you want, I will continue trying to steer people away to credible alternaticves

There is so much negativity in this part of the forums. It's not so much helping as battering opinions into people.

Sometimes it is needed, especially when people come on raving about Razer because someone on '1337 gamerz sound reviewz' says razer 2.1 system rocks for £200+. Im not trying to ever steer people to what I would want, but always provide alternatives and tell em to have a demo if at all possible.

BOSE I will continue to bash as they produce overpriced, mediocre sounding equipment, marketed as the best brand and stuff in the world. Im not soo stupid, and have heard enough of their stuff to know that.

:D

i think that BOSE has a better reputation than it deserves for what it costs. its not that bose stuff sounds bad, many people really like the sound signature of thier stuff but they certainly do have a sound signature. its just that they have abig marketing budget so they get into mainstream shops people here them and go wow.

most people dont know that for the same money they could probably get stuff they would like a hell of a lot more, cant buy it if you dont know it exists
