I love the crab. Must be a laugh to watch.

edit: who would win in a fight between the crab and one of the spiders?

Agreed, I bet the crab is awesome.

I'd say the crab would win vs most of them due to its hardened carapace. But I could be wrong tho...

I suspect the crab as well, it's very well armoured and has very strong claws. Although if the spider was able to hold it then it would suffocate the crab as the crab needs to wet its gills in order to breathe.

Always been fascinated by spiders but have a complete phobia of them too. Bit of an odd combo really. Glad I live nowhere near Cannock :)

I know what you mean, I look at them and are facinated by them on t.v. programs but wouldn't want one on my hand. From what I read they are quite docile, on the whole. I think its the chilean rose one that is recommended for beginners and families, very, very docile.

I've got him in a spare tank I had which is a 60x45x60cm (LxWxH) exo terra terrarium, it's set up as half land and half water. Water is heated to 29C and filtered, the land area is heated with 2 large heatmats on the back of the tank.

A bog standard aquarium will do, just need to male sure it's got a very secure lid as these crabs are very strong and extremely fast.

I expect one of those crabs could do more harm than some of the more docile spiders, bet they have very strong grips.

Yeah, but at the end of the day, no matter how awesome they are, how freaked would you be to go to one of the cages and find it empty... oh its 11pm time for sleep...

And wake up with one on your FACE.

eeek

I remember years ago I did a tour up dunns river falls in Jamaica. Once we got to the top the guide said look up.
I nearly pooped!! big hairy multi coloured spiders in the canopy..

I also saw a camel spider in the wild.. my god they are fast!

Nice too see the pics, but you can keep them :)

what haooens if you squeeze the round sac thing on the back>?

You mean on the spiders? That's the abdomen where all their organs are and it's pretty delicate. It's not unknown for a dropped tarantula to burst its abdomen, sometimes it can be glued back together but more often than not it results in death. That's one of the reasons some keepers won't handle their spiders, just in case they get dropped.

Apparently most people will consume on average 8 spiders per year during our sleep from them crawling into your mouth. I dont know how true it is, but regardless i wear a gas mask when i sleep.

any of those spiders able to kill you?

Quite possibly, it depends whether you're allergic to the venom or not and that's something you won't know until you get bitten. Different species have different strengths of venom. Out of the ones I keep the Indian Ornamental is the most venomous.

Awesome stuff, nice photos, and v-interesting thread!!

Spiders can chew through metal?

Yep! Check this out: http://www.arachnofreaks.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=597&KW=Fang+power

Never been a single documented death from a tarantula bite :)

Some nasty allergic reactions sure, but no deaths - ever.

I actually know Cossor, he's a good guy :)

i dont mind being bitten for science :) :D
