Fallout3 DLC - Its Here!!

I think we're just really lucky that valve give us so much free stuff (I guess they make up for it with brand loyalty etc). If someone makes a product I expect to pay for it.

So you would be happy paying for a full loaf of bread, but only getting half a loaf and then paying for the other half later?

Prob take an hour tops to complete. PC gaming should remain free from paid for DLC, its always been the case and it should continue to be. Most people will only pirate it anyway so its a waste of time ;)

Apparently they're quoting 4-6 hours depending on play style

I distinctly remember buying expansions for games before such as Creature Isle for Black and White and that was a good few years ago.

I honestly think Bethesda have learned their lesson with the horse armour DLC for Oblivion and won't make that mistake again. While I'm sure there won't be any great playtime in this there are full release games out there that can barely claim to have 4-6 hours of play time. I think I completed Call of Duty 4 in under six hours on Veteran for example.

For those holding up the Mass Effect DLC as a shining example, there wasn't really that much in it and certainly wouldn't have been worth very much money wise. Also, did we not have to pay for the expansions to Baldur's Gate so many years ago? The only people I can think of who have released sizeable DLC for free would be the people behind The Witcher with the Enhanced Edition which was extremely brilliant of them.

Edit: Oh and Valve

Looks like your blurring the lines between DLC and expansions.

I'll give you a hint, DLC is EXTRA content either cut from the original game or created new. E.g. Horse armour, mage tower etc

Expansions are NEW content created to expand the game in another direction and sometimes further along the story e.g. Shivering Isles.

Suggest you read up on them before you try and act like the messiah.

You lot are being ridiculously paranoid, who is to say it was cut from the original game?? The only company that have obviously done that so far is EA

This is more expansion than just a small bit of added content. What about this screams removed from the game? There's a new location and story that's significantly removed from the main game and it sounds like here's a fair amount of original art and assets. I have no qualms paying money for this (unlike horse armour) but it's too much imo and the method of purchase is ridiculous.

Beth did it quite blatantly in Oblivion. The horse armour came out like a week after the game which made it obvious it had been ready before the game shipped and then excised. Even worse was the Orerry which rather than adding a door went in behind an already existing and unopenable door that was obviously there for that purpose.

So what is the new GTA4 DLC then? and Shivering isles was also DLC, yet an expansion. Sounds like you need to read up on them as well, especially as you claim DLC and expansions are both new content :p

The only thing that defines DLC is that....it is downloadble. Expansion and DLC are exactly the same thing, additional content for the game. The only difference is DLC is digital.

Not trying to act like a messiah, not even sure where you're going with that comment  I don't necessarily agree with everything Bethesda are doing, such as their means of distributing the DLC but hopefully they'll do like they did with Oblivion and provide alternative sources.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Has anyone got any musings on what the DLC is actually like from playing it so far?

From what i understand, this 4-6 hour DLC/add-on/mod etc, is basicly a new vault that you go too and then load up the 'new' content where you get to play out a theoretical scenario. But this is all on a computer so any weapons or new things you get are literraly only in-game on a computer.
Really, really seems this was created earlier because that a pretty poor idea for DLC or Expanstion.

Think bethesda said that the second and third ex-packs/dlc will introduce an actual new area with an extra 10 levels to get. But the second dlc/x-pack is an arena or some sort, maybe introducing new weapons but not till the 3rd x-pack/dls is there going to be a level change. Seems like a little bit of a rip off to be honest

Check it out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downloadable_content

The phrase is used to refer specifically to content created for video games that is released separately from the main video game release.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_pack

An expansion pack, expansion set, or supplement is an addition to an existing role-playing game, tabletop game or video game. These add-ons usually add new game areas, weapons, objects, and/or an extended storyline to a complete and already released game

MASSIVE difference to me.

Guessing your part of the "new" generation of gamer, used to paying retarded amounts of money for such little content.

So you wouldn't be happy buying a loaf of bread and then paying for a roll? ;)

I'm not sure what's in this, but I think this DLC fits both the descriptions you just posted.

No I am not, no need to be condescending because you have no idea what you're talking about
You do realise those two quotes say exactly the same thing? New content released after the initial release. Its just an industry term used to describe a form of expansion released by purely digital means.

CoD4 -- Map Pack -- FREE on PC

Gears of War -- Entire extra Chapter -- FREE on PC

Mass Effect -- Single Mission Pack -- FREE on PC

Team Fortress 2 -- Extra Maps, Weapons, Gameplay Modes etc etc -- FREE on PC

Counterstrike Source -- Extra Maps, Skins, Models etc etc -- FREE on PC

Guild Wars -- Sorrows Furnace, constant addition of quests and content, new weapons, skins, gameplay modes, collectables etc etc -- FREE on PC

The list could go on, on PC you do not expect to have to pay for DLC, it just isn't done. It is either a free DLC pack of some sort, or merged into a patch, or it is a pay for expansion pack of a decent size offering a good chunk of extra stuff.

MS can seriously bog off if they think I am paying £6 for a pack containing a single mission scenario. Hell the game itself is only £17...

The Guild Wars one is a bit cloudy surely? Hasn't there been a couple of quests you can only get through the store?

Edit: I really don't like the attitude that there seems to be towards Fallout 3 in here purely because of the DLC...
The standard game is most definately not half a loaf. ;)

aww man.. i was so looking forward to getting expansions for Fallout 3... but they're charging for it... how much gameplay can you get out of this expansion?

I'm guessing there is no planned PS3 DLC then? :(

MS have exclusivity to it on PC and 360 for now but it will be released on PS3 later this year sometime...

Just to reiterate what one of the users in that thread has said: Magazine articles are sometimes finished weeks and months before the magazine itself is published. As such, when the person being interviewed said next year, he was referring to 2009 because at the time of being interviewed it was still 2008 :)

No they were extras if you bought one of the expansions through the store, and they were free.

The only pay for stuff on Guild Wars is the Stand alone games (which are entire games), or the EotN Expansion Pack (which again is the size of a full game).
