Fallout3 DLC - Its Here!!

So what money was perhaps made elsewhere to cover it so they didn't feel the need to, that argument doesn't wash. If a developer wants to charge for something they've had to dedicate more time to then so bloody well be it. End of thread. The only thing im remotely annoyed about is they're using that god awful piece of ***** GFWL. I want to buy it online with a normal card and not using Billy boys points.

Actually in the case of DLC via games for windows, its generally Microsoft that force the developers to make DLC charge.

Microsoft has especially borne the brunt of criticism regarding downloadable content.[13] They were the first to successfully introduce downloadable content to consoles with the Xbox, and also the first to charge money for it.

Microsoft has since then been known to force developers to release their content at a charge, when the developers would rather release their content for free. Some content has even been withheld from release because the developer refused to charge the amount Microsoft required. Epic Games, a developer known for continual support of their older titles with downloadable maps and updates, believed that releasing free downloadable content over the course of a game's lifetime helped increase sales throughout, and had succeeded well with that business-model in the past, but was forced to implement Microsoft's strategy of fee-based downloads when releasing content for their Microsoft-published game, Gears of War.

I don't think it matters mate either way - I still think Fallout 3 is vast, and impressive, and if it helps the devs then I'm happy to put a little extra their way. Having said that, I haven't seen how much it costs yet!! :)
Too much, 5$ for something like this is acceptable, 10$ is not, 3 of those packs and that's bordering on expansion price, which it definitely does not merit.

I don't think Microsoft had to force anyone, Bethesda were always going to charge for this just as they have done with EVERY bit of add on content for their games?

Either way just pay for it or don't. Not everything in life is free. How many hours of playtime is expected from ths expansion/content.

EDIT : works out about £6 then **** all if it gets me a few hours playtime.

Yup Valve are being forced by MS to charge for the TF2 updates that all us PC folks have got for free.

And that is the main reason Valve have yet to release them on the xbox, they've said if they are going to be forced to charge for them then they are going to bring as big an update as possible and charge the minimum they can...

One more reason I'll never use an Xbox again.

I doubt you'll get over an hour of gametime out of this, but i remain to be convinced by Bethesda, i stopped paying for the content after shelling out money for a friggin mage tower on top of a hill.

Yea some of the Oblivion content was **** poor I do agree with you all on that. I do want to know whether this is worth it this time. 352mb looks like quite a hefty pack. How many hours do the developer quote for this?

4-6 hours depending on play style.

4-6 hours MS/bethesda said, but at most, 2.5 hours is what you will get playing slowly. There are afew reviews about that have said 1-2 hours and its not perticularly enjoyable, and i can see why.

Nico can you link me to a review please.

Operation Anchorage, then, through the simple fact that it is not as much fun as it the game it leeches upon, is not a resounding success. Of course, it could be argued that it's not supposed to feel like the full game and that all of my complaints are to do with its 'simulation' setting; but this is before we get round to the pricing. After all, 800 Microsoft Points (despite the best efforts of a turbulent economy) still comes in at the best part of seven quid. I played through the download, at my own pace and in no particular hurry, and completed it in a smidge over two and a half hours. Now, it's not up to me to decide what you can or cannot afford - you're the one that knows your secret internet banking code, not me. But I will say that if my girlfriend were ever to find out that I'd spent seven quid out of our joint account on 150 minutes of gameplay that I only half-enjoyed, she'd kick me in the face. She wouldn't even hesitate. This is why I shred the statements.

Not all PC DLC has been free -

Battlefield 2 and 2142 Booster Packs
Test Drive Unlimited Car Pack (?)
Oblivions Stuff

That said, ive always had a lot of love for the companies that do release stuff for free, but i dont have anything against a company charging for it as long as it doesnt take the mick (this 800 points for this is a bit of a rip).

Anyway, ive been enjoying it so far, the stealth intro is pretty badazz :).

Does anyone remember when additions like this were free because they extended the life of the game and encouraged people who hadn't tried it or heard of it yet to give it a go? I don't care if someone wants to call me a whiner or whatever, knock yourself out, I just don't remember this sort of micro-transaction based gaming being "the norm" before the Xbox 360 came along.

That said, I still wouldn't buy this even if I did think it was worth the money. Purely because I don't understand why Microsoft would force me to buy 1000 points to spend 800 of them instead of charging my credit card directly, to me it's always reeked of some sort of scam to make you think "oh well, I can use my leftover points to buy more from Microsoft in the future, if I buy more points to make up the difference" sort of thing.

Edit: Eurogamer have given it a paltry 5/10, they seem pretty unimpressed. I certainly wasn't enthused by this quote, though it did get a laugh out of me; "I will say that if my girlfriend were ever to find out that I'd spent seven quid out of our joint account on 150 minutes of gameplay that I only half-enjoyed, she'd kick me in the face. I can't believe this tread has almost 100 replies with not one by anyone that has actually downloaded and played the content.

Is it any good?

I am happy to pay for anything if I feel it is value for money but personally I am only interested in the third DLC package but I have to say I am 100% unimpresed with having to buy microsoft tokens and by the sound of it having to buy 20% more than I need. Hopefully by the time the third part is out they will have released it somewhere else where I can buy it for cash.

Did it expand the game in some way.....??

Then that would make it some type of expansion no matter how small or large

M,

You know what I mean, let's not dance around words to increase your post count.

Anyway, it's stupid that it is PC content with a price, but what's even more stupid is that Microsoft are trying to bring the point system over to the PC. **** OFF.

Well, maybe his 'girlfriend' needs to enroll in an anger management class....:p

I won't be getting this add on. I really like Fallout 3, espescially with mods on my 2nd play-through but this whole MS points crap is a bridge too far. Seems there is only a couple of hrs gaming in it anyway, what rubbish value for money. Only DLC I ever bought was for Rock Band on 360. At least with that, some of the money is going to a third party (the Artists who wrote the songs), not some pact that MS and Bethesda cooked up to rip us off. I still feel dirty though, having bought that damn points card at the time....

Sad times. Someone mentioned Guild Wars and other games earlier. I remember downloading that Sorrows Furnace add on for GW, hrs upon hrs of great adventuring, all for free. Hell, even Bioware had the decency to give their Mass Effect DLC free on PC version.
