January Transfer Window Thread - rumours and signings here

Pretty sure that he's not gonna go to City, they're not going to be good for a few years yet and by then it'll be all over for Arshavin. He needs a club which will be in the CL for the next few seasons. I don't think he's going to be swayed by huge money since he is already on huge money, I think he's moving for good football. Plus I don't think he's a Mark Hughes type of player, he's good.

Maybe that's what is delaying his move to Arsenal then :p

I know many disagree but I do think the current squad is more than good enough to qualify for CL IF they were all fit. Again probably not the popular opinion but I also think that they are trying to sign players, its just that we are a lot tighter than most of the rest

With Fab and a couple of others looking likely to be out for most of the rest of the season, some investment is needed.

The biggest problem is that 3 of the very best players (Rosicky, Walcott, Fabregas) are all out with serious, long term injuries. Why can't Eboue mess his ligaments up, or Song :(?

Surely Chelsea?

Lot of talk on the Liverpool boards that Keane did a runner after being told he was only on the bench yesterday. Don't know if it's true or not but if it is he can **** right off.

I mentioned Liverpool because they can't play wide and are forced narrow too often. Nor do Liverpool have any wingers of a high standard, Chelsea at least have Joe Cole and other players who can go out wide if needed (Kalou/Malouda/Anelka)
Fabregas is 21 and has played 219 games for Arsenal and 37 for Spain:eek:

But we've only had Anderson for 18 months :p. Fabregas is a freak occurance in football anyway.
VDS is not in Cech or Given's league. Cuddicini is also better than him.

Couldn't disagree with you more. VDS was very good at Fulham too let's not forget, and he kept them in the EPL a couple of seasons. His record speaks for itself at Man Utd and he's been a key element in the back line and our successful defence the last few seasons. VDS is currently in the top 3 keepers in the EPL.
I think it's quite clear that in Benitez's team, the best combination is Torres with Gerrard behind him. Two men up front just doesn't work out as well as it looks on paper for Liverpool. Add into the mix, that Rafa has destroyed Keane's confidence in the last few months, it's never going to work out for Keane at Liverpool.
Yep. Two strikers only works well with wide players.

I cant believe Bolton are actually in talks to sign Veloso, hes a quality player and much better than Bolton
Not from what I've seen of him.

Kenwyne Jones has signed a new 4 and half year deal at Sunderland. maybe harry redknapp will shut the **** up now.

For £15m I'd have snapped their hand off for Jones.

Riera's been better than all of those and is the most natural wide player too

I've watched many Liverpool games this season and Riera has been decent at best. I don't rate Malouda as you know, but my point was Liverpool have 1 wide player and Chelsea have 3.

I don't think anyone would take Riera over Joe Cole and I wouldn't even have Riera given at Man Utd. He's not that good, he's just a filler, like many of the Liverpool squad at the moment.

We can and we do. Riera and Kuyt both stick to the wings and get in a lot of crosses. Chelsea play far narrower with only Cole and Boswinga providing any width.

Except Cole and Bosingwa are better wide players than Kuyt (who is awful) and Riera (who is average). You also missed Ashley Cole who has been getting forward under Big Phil.

I meant Ashley. Cole (Joe) doesn't really provide them with much width at all. Always cuts inside and rarely gets any crosses in.

Chelsea have been criticised a lot for being too narrow this season, can't remember the same being said about us.

LOL :D

Of the 3 Chelsea wingers only Malouda stays out wide so if you want to count them then i'll throw Babel, Benayoun, El Zhar and Kuyt into the mix. Now we have 5 to Chelsea's 3 :p

And i certainly would take Riera ahead of Cole after the way he's played since joining us. He's been far from average and looks like being an absolute bargain.

Me neither. In actual fact the so called experts on Sky etc have put our good start down to the extra width Riera's given us this season.

Harry has said all along that all Sunderland needed to do was say he wasn't for sale. Someone somehwere was playing games.

behave man, safc have said for weeks he wasnt for sale. harry knows all the tricks, hes basically admitted doing it as well.

funny how he never mentioned to the press that he was in for chimbonda, gets knocked back for jones so goes public. hes done it a thousand times.

Two sides to every story, always is. From what I've heard you were looking at a swap with Bent and about £10m on top, when Spurs wouldn't play ball you kicked off saying stop unsettling our striker.

sbragia said about 10 days ago in the NE press that he would rather walk away from the club than sell Jones so our manager has been pretty clear about his stance

money is pointless to us this late in the window if its 10m or 20m, you wouldnt be able to replace what he brings to the side in the short timespace left...pleased he has signed up long term and his positive statement about the club and team...its obvious when you see them celebreating that he and cisse look to have become good friends..I assume we have given Jones some sort of guarantee that if we stay up we will be signing the frenchman

keane had tried previously to buy Bent so thats where our past link may be coming from..but Bent is too much like Cisse in the way he plays (and equally as hopeless with his head it seems) so would be of no benefit to the team overall..Jones has a lot to his game for us both attacking and defending set pieces that Bent simply cannot replace

You don't get the picture ;) We had him when we were in our prime, he couldn't even make the first 11!

And you forgot COventry and Inter!

To be fair to Keane with regards to Inter, his signing couldn't have happened at a worse time looking back at it. Lippi signed him and then was sacked weeks after Keane arrives. New manager takes over and wants rid of Keane and he's loaned to Leeds (I think) soon after. People also forget he was only a young lad back then, 19/20yrs old. Stats would suggest he didn't do too badly at Leeds, same with Liverpool really if you look at games played and goals scored, but I guess seeing him on a weekly basis paints a better picture.

What are the odds on Arshavin getting injured within a month if he actually signs for Arsenal?

Also, there are only 3 CL spots up for grabs this season isn't there? Two definite ones, and third place you have to qualify?

Four spots surely? 3rd and 4th have to enter qualifiers I think.
