sorry guys, another dreamy thread!

But I can get a much better car in my opinion for less money, I'm not going to spend more on something I don't like.

I paid £500 for my escort, i done 8000 miles in it and it never broke down. If you can find a classic that manages to repeat that then i'll eat my words, however i don't think that will happen.

Thinking with your heart will only cause you a massive headache.

If your so stuck on the idea of having a classic because you're too stubborn or 'individual' to own a normal car why not buy an MGB GT? parts are cheap and are still made to this day, they are very good looking, the rear hatch can hold a decent amount of luggage, they are mechanically simple and good fun to drive. 4k will buy you a reasonable example and you'll be able to easily improve the handling and braking to modern standards as many companies do upgrades for B's

I got a triumph spitfire as my first car at 19 and i haven’t regretted it yet. It hasn’t let me down at all and i love driving it so much. Of course with reliability i’ve probably been quite lucky, but it helps to keep an eye on everything regularly.

Id suggest its probably better if you buy one sooner rather than later, as the prices tend to rise in summer (how it seems to me anyway..)

I'm paying more than 1600 for mine(though fully comp), but when i checked quotes for 'normal' first cars, they wernt all that more reasonable.

Thanks for one of the few useful posts in this thread, (there have been others). Do you have MSN?

I've considered one, but they cost more to insure, I don't have 4k, and I prefer the look of the spitfire.

I'm not looking for something that reliable, if it gets me where I'm going 75% of the time I'll be happy. I'm happy to sacrafice reliablity so I can have something I actually like.

by the way when did you get this quote on the insurance off of adrian flux? and was it done through the website?

That's really not a surprise Yantorsen.

I only just saw that

If you ask a nazi if nazism is a good idea, what will they say? If you ask a racist if racism is a good idea, what will they say?

A landrover nut will hardly give you a balanced opinion about landies

Since two of my mates have a B it wouoldnt be that different either :p

No but at least you straight away have 2 people who can offer you help and advice. Stop trying to be different, there's always someone out there with a similar car. Why obsess over it?

Yant, seriously think about things before getting involved with an old car. I've had my mini for a good time now and I've got my second driving test coming up soon. It has cost me a significant amount of money, which a modern first car would not have done (in all likelyhood). I love the car, I enjoy driving it, and I enjoy working on it. Reliability is not the be all and end all for me, nor is being super cheap to run. There's a lot of history with minis in the family and it means something to me as well. That's why I got it.

Honestly, I wouldn't reccomend an older car unless you are really certain it is for you, which, judging by your haphazard decisions of HMM I WANT THIS, it doesn't seem like it.

Having something you LIKE for a first car is not a priority. I know you want to be cool and different and have something individual, but unless you have the funds, and motivation to dedicate to it, the fun WILL run out.

You obviously didn't notice the face after the land rover bit.

And I'm not obsessing over it, it'd be nice not to see clones of my car around every other corner. But it's not going to cost any more and its a much better car in my opinion.

I do have the funds, and I do have the tinme and motivation. But it's early days, probably won't be getting it for 6 months at least, probably not until next year, so I have plenty of time to do research, and I've just throwing ideas about to get opinions. I only need to hear someones opinion once though, I'm talking mainly to Fox there.

Whats a much better car + what will be cheaper to run? I can tell you now that the mg will be better than the triumph, i can also tell you parts will be cheaper because they're still being made. I can speak from experience because my father owns a B and i've seen how easy it is to get parts for it

I agree, B's are nice, my mate has one, and it seems to never break down as well. Having said that everything I've read on the triumph from the web seems to suggest that it is similar, fairly cheap parts, and simple to work on etc.

But the Spitfire is cheaper to insure, and about half the price to begin with, so it probably balances out, but I since I prefer the look of the spitfire anyway...

If thats what you want there's no point argueing.

It'll be interesting to see what you actually buy when you pass your test...
