I got Vista Ultimate 64Bit and boy what a waste! :D I will get Home Premium without a doubt this time.

i'm not sure will wait and see what the prices are. also with the issue of not being able to do a clean install with an upgrade disc on vista. so wanna find out about that too.

When i was buying my copy of vista i did think about buying the ultimate flavour for a while just because it is called ultimate but in the end common sense prevailed and i got home premium. I will be getting the home premium again when 7 is released.

I just hope the retails aren't overly expensive. I recall paying £220 for Home Prem on the day of release. I'll be buggered if I'm going down that road again.

There will only be 3 versions to the consumer, and one with limited distribution.

Home Premium
Professional
Ultimate (low distribution)

What they should do is just do one edition and charge a flat £50 for it. They'd wipe the floor and put mac out of business

Microsoft don't actually want Apple to go out of business though. If that happens, MS will be a monopoly and will have to deal with all the legal kerfuffle associated with it.

I've seen it reported that there will be both a Starter and Home Basic edition.

Starter can only run 3 aps at once and is aimed at Netbooks.
Home Basic will be for the third world.

It seem they are mixing up there old naming convention a bit.

Personally I think they are daft. Its better than the Vista way but I think they should just have two versions.

Basic which should be as bare a possible to encompass, low powered computers, kiosks, media player/centre as an additional download to get the EU off its N editions.

Ultimate With everything.

Unlike with Vista, they are not really removing any features the higher up you go (e.g. business adding remote desktop but removing media centre)

The starter and basic versions will not be available at all for home pc's in the UK so these 2 are null and void.

The enterprise edition will be for business purchases only (and probably pirates due to the volume activation)

I think this time microsoft have hit the nail on the head. Consumers have 3 main choices. Ultimate does not really have features that are incredibly desirable for home users and home premium will suffice for most. With those who want more advanced features opting for the pro version.

And for those who moan about the number of available SKU's remember there are quite a few versions of XP: XP Home , XP Pro, XP Media Center, XP Tablet Edition, XP Pro x64 (not the same as vista xx 32/64 bit as this was really based off of 2003 64bit and has different cd key from Pro 32 bit) and XP embedded to name a few. But, granted these weren't all available on realse but really how many of you have really seen more than the 3 main versions (home Pro and Media) available?

I wonder if W7 Home Basic will include the Aero/transparent theme?

I think I'll pick up Home Premium 64Bit.
