Windows 7 final editions announced

one thing they should drop is 'upgrade ability'

upgrades are dirty and leave so many left overs, there are too many variables to contend with, they should just force a boot from DVD install with no upgrade option

agreed. however with vista they went the other way making it impossible to do a clean install with an upgrade disc unless you used some dodgy 3rd party work around.

that what I mentioned about later in 2010 or maybe delay into 2011..

MS need lots of work and testing before it release to make sure it work and dont want same mistake as Vista - the team need lots of work in time without beign too hurry... I would think it take time, I dont think W7 would release in 2009 - most likely are from 2010 or later that depend from MS when they are done.

again agreed. when i did my ms training, they admitted that the biggest problem with vista was they did not get the beta out quick enough to the software companies and rushed the release date.

i think they should hold off, however i do think i will be sat here using it this time next year

I agree with that.

Had to do an XP Home to Professional Upgrade last week, and it was awful. It wouldn't join the domain without around 2 hours of fiddling. Ended up just formatting in the end.

Also, I'll probably get Vista Business for my Desktop - Home Premium for other machines.

I'll get Business because I want remote desktop.

plenty of reg tweaks around that give you remote desktop on home prem... i have done so myself

Fairly sure those articles are garbage. MS has said it'll be done early 2010 (setting themselves a very achieveable goal), and are more than likely going to RTM before the end of this year. The Beta's feature complete, and pretty stable. Next is a Release Candidate, then a release. It's not going to be long. That article says they haven't started planning. Eh? If they haven't started planning, then how have they released a feature complete version? It also says it might not be released until 2013. I would expect the version after 7 to be released around then - so maybe they've got their wires crossed.

Vista was a big change. 7 will not be. If it works on Vista, it'll pretty much work on 7.

yeah that is the big plus point, and also pretty much everyone has at least 2 core's if not quad. so the performance issue won't be such a problem, shops were selling vista with 512 or 1gig of memory, now even the likes of high street shops ship duel core 2gig of ram as the bottom line.

Im quite looking forward to getting these on the MSDN, might give a few a try and see what version i prefer. annoyingly i can't get the beta to work in a VM, only virtual pc mind. i don't fancy paying for VMWare

Under the list of missing things from the Home Premium it has Offline Folders. Anyone care to enlighten me as to what Offline Folders are and if I (being an average Joe) am likely to miss them?

Thanks

i think its when you working on documents or files saved on a server... say using a laptop at work and the you work offline when you get home, it would update when you resycn with the network? that would be my take on it.

I'll probably buy Ultimate, feels second rate otherwise :p

I need to find a way to sell products to you. :D

You could have the standard edition for £50, but why have that when you can have the ****ing awesome *** SLi XTX edition for a measly £350! :p

Still the choice between Media Centre and Remote desktop, something used by me a lot... looks like ill be sticking to Home Premium as long as someone hacks RDC server into it again...

I dont understand why they dont just do a simple version, and a full version, like XP, it worked fine.

EDIT: hang on... they have taken all the networky server based stuff out of home editions, yet recently launched there new Home Server software.... which would mean you would want all the home servery stuff...

Its just a ploy to get people who want anything more than the basic to buy the Ultimate.

Will just get what ever comes with the Microsoft action pack.

Couldn't justify buying Ultimate especially if the extra were like the Vista extras..
