Windows 7 beta - 9th January

I'm getting a strange problem with W7, It installed without any errors onto a clean Drive and all goes well until I need to restart the PC.
At which point it hangs just after the boot with the following message "Verifying DMI Pool data...."

I've installed twice with the same result, I can get it to boot if I have a Windows Disc in the Drive and that disc dosn't even have to be W7, XP will work.

Any Ideas?

By the way, what happens when the beta period ends? Do our beta installations stop working after a given period, or do we get to keep it? I'd hate to have it shut down and then have to wait months to buy the proper OS.

It will likely lock you out and promt you to validate windows. You wont be able to because its a time limited Beta, so that will be it.

think the cut off is 1st July isnt it?

the final will be out by or soon after this ver expires. i'm almost 100% certain. RC comes out soon - the only RC version.

going by vista and XP betas i had - it just stops working. would be good to be able to upgrade the version to the final though

Microsoft Windows 7 Beta Build 7022.0.x86fre has been leaked.
and the MS boys are playing with beta build 7034
so it moving very fast.

I'm enjoying it too...it's everything Vista should have been 2 years ago really.

It is a big departure from XP and it's takes me away from that kicking and screaming but it is most definitely a worth successor overall.

The only thing I don't really like is Internet Explorer 8....I just can't get used to its interface and stupid domain highlighting thing in the address bar...uggh!

I'm an XP user and had no interest in Vista as it didn't offer me anything I needed I thought I would give Win7 ago.

I only installed it yesterday and I still carn't get it to boot without the DVD in the drive so that hasn't made a good impression but it did install much quicker and it feels more complete when it does boot.

I do find the constant resizing of my windows annoying to say the least, I'll have to turn that off for a start. It looks ok but to be honest I don't see what the fuss is about it's just an operating system. It did feel quite quick but so is XP when you first install it.I still carn't see anything that I need or am I missing something?

Too many little annoying issues for me,I know its beta but there just not enough there for me to upgrade from Vista, I'll shall save my cash for Win8 :).

Just installed this on my main rig on a separate HDD for dual booting. I've even got it running on my media machine which is a athlon 2400 with a 9200 le. Which I'm upgrading to a 6600gt as it doesnt have drivers. Also only got 512mb ram. Seems to still run ok though. Any idea how much it will cost when its released. How long can we use the beta version? Will we be given the option to buy a liscence at the end? Sorry I'm too lazy to find the answers :D

Might be helpful if you tell us what you use your computer for. Otherwise we can't really tell you what features you might find useful. If you just open IE/Firefox then there's probably not much point upgrading to Vista/7 until you buy a new PC.

My W7 x86 install seems to be taking it upon itself to send huge chunks of data to MS. I noticed my upstream bandwidth was being saturated for several minutes at a time and all the connections seem to be to watson.microsoft.com.

Anyone had similar or know what's going on here?

Watson is the error reporting service built into Windows. Although I can't explain why it would be sending huge chunks of data all the time.

Check out the Windows 7 forum to see if there's a fix and also send some feedback and explain the problem.

Any idea how much an OEM x64 bit Home Premium version might be priced at?

And when the RC is released, is that going to be a windows update on top of the current beta or will it be a whole fresh new client?

Most likely have a similar pricing model to Vista. So for Home Premium x64 OEM it would be £91 from OcUK.

And the RC release will be a fresh install I would imagine.

Just remembered about this post here. Sounds similar to what's happening to you. So maybe that will fix it for you.

I loaded W7 Beta 64-bit on Saturday for a bit of a sneek peek and I must say its been superb. Its taken everything i've thrown at it so far, WoW for a few hours yesterday, some video editing and Photoshop work. No crashes, hangs, stutters - my WoW framerates were as good as XP.

And, my biggest Vista bugbear seems to have disappeared: NO DISK THRASHING! Sorry for the shout, but I'm so happy about this, it irritated me so much in Vista.

A bit more testing and I think i'll use it as my main OS over XP. Looking forward to the final release - kudos to MS for listening and producing what looks to be a really sound OS. :)

Am I right in thinking the beta expires on July 1st?
