Asus P5Q-E (P45) Motherboard Review

That's pretty good power draw considering you got a mama Radeon sitting in there!

However the fact that it's your "Games Rig" really does justify getting the memory frequency running faster?

You have a Radeon HD4870 which tells me you crave FPS so I don't understand why you would slow your gaming performance down with slow system memory?

Tom's running his sticks at little over 1.8vDimm @ 540Mhz so it just shows how good modern sticks can run with a little tweakage!

Well, from what I've seen from My testing running the CPU at 4ghz and the memory 1:1 gives a nice balance 1Meg super pi is 11.4 sec and gaming at 1920x1200 cranking the system up to 4.2/4.3 ghz does not give any worthwhile gains and certainly less than 2 GFX cards in crossfire...but they have gone as I can't be doing with the Heat/noise and power just to play a couple of games a few frames faster (and the ones that needed the boost did not work well with crossfire anyway)

I've had plenty of Systems that Hung on the edge and after a couple of hours online gaming the mouse/usb controler would cook and go intermittent or something else would "throw a rod" ! So My take on extreme overclocking now is Start with a proper watercooled ground up setup like Gurusan or be happy with a mild stable overclock ;)
Whilst I've had fun in the past getting up early to a cold PC and seeing it could hang together long enough to break 15K in 3dmark before everything got hot :D I think I get my kicks out of making the hole rig run as cool and quiet and low power as possible and still have high end performance when I need it
But please if You get any big memory related gains on Your new build keep us all posted....because I know your pretty methodical and sensible ( took You 2 bloody weeks to try that bios I sent You for a 4850...) LOL could be intresting

My testing running the CPU at 4ghz and the memory 1:1 gives a nice balance
The point I was making was you stated you were running your RAM at 400MHz/DDR2-800 cas4

I am meaning thats too slow for an overclocked E8600!

There is no need to increase the power draw of your system? there is also no need to cOOk your PC? You just need to *tweak* your ram to run faster if that is possible? :D

There seems to be an Obsession amoung many posters that processor speeds is King, more recently people have been getting into high FSB clocks but that is only one or two main pieces of the puzzle, to make the most of your system you need to be paying attention and grafting at getting your memory running faster also using a divider and give the old PL/tRD some tweakage!

I mean we are all overclockers and tweakers trying to fine tune our systems to be as fast as possible right? If you want a faster system then get your memory running faster to match your overclocked CPU and chipset!

1:1 sync is really only for basic initial testing and for mentally high FSB clocks where you haven't got fast enough memory! :)

Somebody post up some CPU-z & Memset & HWMonitor screenies of their overclocked P5Q-Series! please! :D

Also any ideal what the VIN1 and VIN3 voltages are likely to be?

(AUXTIN seems to pop up from time to time? just a random screwy readout or?)
Heres a few of those apps with my current settings.

Also curious as to what VIN1 and VIN3 relate to.

Anyone know a good site that deciphers the Ai Tweaker Menu - is all french to me :p

No idea what Im doing and dont want to fry anything - on a E5200 if that matters...

Cheers mate

Yeah Im on page 8 so far so slowly going through it and slowly picking it up. Though I expect to still have questions ;). Googling terms has helped, but not always specific to my query...

Just lack confidence as Ive never o/ced a C2D (understand the concepts) - Im sure its easy but the options in the BIOS pretty much scare me (mainly all the DRAM and voltage settings)...

Hey Lads,

I think the P5Q-E doesn't like to run Game-Stable at 450MHz or beyond when using 1:1 sync memory?

Prime Stable yes, IBT stable yes, Folding stable yes, but lob in a good game and there seems to be an issue?

I'm thinking this board prefere the memory to be run on a divider when using higher than 400Mhz-FSB or?

I'm up to 1.34vNB and 1.34vTT and haven't cracked it yet! :o

What's all this 1:1 buisness :D
I expect the extra heat/load from the GFX card is causing the problem, I found You need plenty of headroom especially if You run 2 GFX cards

Heh! . . . it's a really old concept where you used to run the memory frequency at the same speed as the FSB! :p

I wanted to do some testing to compare to the RAM running on a multiplier but it's becoming clear to me that these systems prefere to run the memory faster and async, especially once you clocked higher than 400Mhz-FSB!

I'm still curious why my system falls to pieces once I run the ram 1:1 instead of 3:4 at beyond about 440-450Mhz-FSB

Anyway I am tweaking my Wolfdale/Eaglelake combo up nicely, I've never really knew about low latency computing but this combo is mentally fast (nippy nippy!), now all I need is a little RAID-O jobbie or one of those new SSD!

You got the wrong bloke! ;)

Spec in sig 9 hours blend stable.

450FSB
1.16 NB (surprising how little I needed :D, and the sucker can go all the way up to 1.90v with the right cooling, that; some amazing potential there)
1.36v through the E8400
1.98v through the memory in the end

What are you running your pcie frequency at tom? im currently on 101mhz, btw some very impressive low volts, particularly on the memory.

Im running 101, seen your post earlier regarding going above 450fsb and 1-1 memory, did you get it sorted ok, reason being im thinking of upgrading to a q9550/9560 (depending on funds) ive only ever pushed my q6600 and p5q deluxe to 422 fsb, x9 multi, which is a bit mediocre on this board (my cpu holds my board back) might be a case of a q9550 or an E8600 for a bit of clocking fun.
