I'm not one bit embarassed to be an uber nerd, but there is some sort of stigma out there against being a nerd. I'm degree, post-degree educated and I have a couple of "professional certificates" to my name.

I am an Oracle OCP, and a Microsoft MCDBA.

What IT certifications do you hold and do you actually think it makes your job prospects better?

You're on a computer forum and you're not embarrassed to be a nerd!?

I don't have anything, but years experience serves me well.

Pretty much the same here. Sun Certified Systems Admin for Solaris 8... lol but that's about it. I don't even do *nix sysadmin as my primary job function anymore anyway (came back into Networking a few years back).

Well, I've got a BTEC Level 2 National Diploma in ICT, ECDL and also an OCR National in ICT.

Am at 6th form now, so I will soon have a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma as well.

If I have enough funds I will be doing some A+ Certificates as well.

MCSA, CCNA at the moment... stopped doing certs a year ago. So many people cheat on them they're almost worthless. I'll probably still work towards my MCSE though.

MCDST
MCSA 2003
MCSE+S 2003
VCP 3.5

Looking to do the MCSE 2003 Upgrade to Technology Specialist 2008. I can't complain the exams have helped me get jobs before now. Coupled with years of experience they are very useful to help you stand out.

Got my ITIL v3 and that's it. You don't need certs to succeed in IT, you just need to land a job with a large and well-respected company and then rack up 2 or 3+ years of solid experience proving you can suceed and indeed thrive under pressure in a large corporate environmen. It's worth more than 10 certs.

I've got my HPUX CSA and LPIC level 1 (I think) .... that was only because they decided at work they wanted to be able to say that they had so many certified people.

If they had been willing to pay for the exams then I would be AIX and Tivoli Storage Manager certified too.

One of my mates said "Give it to malc, He knows about all that crap", Does that count ?

Why did you list the MCSA when you have an MCSE? You didn't list all the separate MCPs :P :D

I prefer to use my many, many years of experience but I do have a few qualifications to back it up:

MCSE + Security
ITIL v3 (Foundation)
VCP

and up and coming:

MCTIP Enterprise Messaging Administrator
MCTIP Enterprise Server Administrator

Personally I find experience and ability counts for much more. Yes by all means have the certs to back that up but cert alone and a bit of helpdesk experience do not make a decent professional.

No you won't ;)

I'm the proud holder of a Comptia A+ which I got when I was 15. I think 8 years on it's probably lapsed ;).

I'm now a director and, dealing with people who have these certifications (MCSE/A, CCNA, CCNP, etc) on a daily basis, I can assure you they count for very little. Some of the questions we've been asked by so-called 'professionals' would have you all in fits of laughter!

When I'm hiring I look for (in this order)

- Experience
- Intelligence
- Genuine passion for IT
- Personal skills + ability to work in a team
- Qualifications (although a good degree helps prove point #2)

Obviously larger companies may take a different view but I thought it was worthwhile to offer you mine.
