• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

I have a predicament.

Turn down your CPU OC then test it at it's preset clocks, this should free up some power draw and enable you to rule out your PSU as the culprit.

Also: I'm not going to be so bold as to say your OC isn't solid, but somtimes they can still have issues. My CPU OC holds up to 8+ hours of prime and lots of runs through IBT yet source games sometimes stutter unless I reduce it to 3.4.

Tested with corasir TX850w on friday. Same fault occured.

Also tested with MOBO at default settings - same fault.

I'm pretty sure it's the card and the competitor didn't stress it enough or they put the fan at 100%

Sorry - you're limiting the fan speed? And you're surprised that it's shutting down? I did post above that I had an XFX XXX and it was incredibly hot and the the fan ran 100% and noisy the whole time. That's part of the deal with a heavily overclocked card like this.

lol, You're not expected to force the fan at 100% on a factory OC'd card. Fan speed is automatic based on temperature. If a factory OC'd card requires 100% fan then it needs to be RMA'd. I'm not limiting it, It's not supposed to be at 100%!

BFG only go to 675MHz with water cooling, so you'd have to question why XFX thought the stock cooler could cope?

I completely agree with you mate. However, one assumes these things are tested and i thought it would be fine especially as the XXX is at 670 on core. Also, people clock to over 700 on air so it's probably a duff card. I'm gonna test in another system sometime this week and if it replicates the fault I'm gonna put my foot down and demmand a refund.

WOW, MIGHT HAVE CRACKED IT!

ACCORDING TO MY GTX 280 BOX, I NEED 40A ON THE +12V RAIL. FROM LOOKING AT THE SPECS OF MY PSU ON THE ENERMAX WEBSITE http://enermax.de/en/products/power-supply/infiniti.html IT APPEARS TO HAVE ONLY 30A. IS THIS NOT CRAZY RUBBISH FOR A 720W PSU? ANYWAY, IS IT IN FACT 90A BECAUSE IT COMBINES THE THREE RAILS OR WILL I INDEED NEED TO FORK OUT ON A TX850. AT LEAST I'LL KNOW.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no way that a 720w PSU can combine 3x30 amp rails into a 90amp 12v rail. Try it, and it will go bang, or at the very least shutdown. 90amp x 12v = 1080 watts!. The label on the side will probably tell you something like combined maximum watts 650, or whatever.... Anyway, its nothing to worry about, your PSU will still easily handle an overclocked 280GTX.. Trouble is XFX suck, their testing is terrible, and they will slap overclocked stickers on cards without actually doing much testing, and their support/RMA is dreadfull.

However, if its stable at stock speed, it should be fine, or at least just as good as any other stock speed 280gtx. I certainly wouldnt bother selling it and getting a 260.

The store you bought it from probably just plugged it in, booted windows and said, ok job done, its ok :P XFX suck but if you ignore the fact its supposed to be an overclocked model, its still (probably) a foxconn made card, and if you treat it as a 280GTX it wont be a problem.. Either that or just demand your refund. (But if refund only buys a 260GTX... why not just stick with the 280 at Nvidia reference clocks.)

Thanks. Good advice. If i can get a refund though I can probably afford a GTX285 stock or 4870x2. worth a try i reckon. I'd hapily stick with this card but i'll always be wondering if those crashes are down to it.

I take it that's a joke? My loan comes in one day and the whole thing goes on rent the next day.

For someone with your setup in your sig then I think at least one of your loan payments has gone in the direction of buying computer equipment ;)

Or was it mumsie and dadsie got it for you?

:D

I would look at reducing the OC on the card in small increments to find out what its maximum stable OC is
it really sounds like the card is not able to support the preapplied OC XFX have applied.
Once you can prove it is stable with a smaller OC you can send it back requesting either a replacment or refund stating that the product is not fit for purpose ie it doesnt work properly as stated on the box/manual.

That made me laugh. :D :p

It made me think *This product is supposed to work properly* in big red letters on the box.

I would think the shop could possibly be lying. Some of them most probably just throw it in and if the drivers install and it looks alright in windows, they send it back.

I bought a 3870X2 about last January, it ended up becoming faulty around March/April. The memory went on it, so I was getting checkerboard patters on the screen when I tried to run any 3D accelerated applications.

I sent it back to the shop and gave them specific details of how to find the fault, and said it was critical that they test it in games or 3D apps.

Anyway, they did, found it was faulty, and I actually got a full refund of the (about) £250 I spent on it to put towards a 4850 crossfire bundle.

Grab a 4870X2 if you can get a refund.

If the card doesn't run at stock then it's not fit for purpose, and stock on these cards is the pre-applied overclock, not the reference clocks that NV set.

Happened with my BFG 280 OC where the ram had to be downclocked to run minus artifacts. As I could easily send it back directly to the manufacturer due to past experience of sending it to etailers to find no fault I got a replacement no problem :)

It doesnt work with the pre-applied OC, it happens!

As stated make specific reference to programs that it fails in! I mentioned both GTA 4 and Crysis as the best programs to show the problems with the card :)

RMAing to XFX is akin to sitting in a bath of dog faeces. Not pleasant and best avoided. Hopefully i can convince the competitor to reconsider a refund

I know what you mean, I gave up in the end, not implying that you should but this was my first time with xfx rma process and it was a bit much all in all.

As stated in email, offer is still open to pop round mine at the weekend, or me to yours, to test it in another mobo :)

With the long hours at work atm, I cant do mid week.

Cheers mate, i've replied to it.

THIS HAS STARTED HAPPENING IN COD4 NOW. HMMMMMM NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS CARD MY ****. THIS SCRENSHOT WAS TAKEN WHILST CARD TEMPS WERE WELL WITHIN SAFE RANGE.

It seems like strange things are happening more and more often as time goes on. Having tested with a corsair TX850 and Enermax 720, can this possibly be my motherboard? Why did the competitor not pick up on the crashing and corruption? I've tried fresh Vista install and more drivers than I've had hot dinners. + the issues still occur when mobo bios is at default with no OC.

I hope you're not being serious, I resent being branded as a spoilt middle class kid. I'm 23 and I've been working for 5 years. After rent on my flat I had enough left over to treat myself to PC components once in a while. Now I'm at Uni I have no income and lots of outgoings. Mumsy and Dadsy cant afford to put me through Uni, let alone buy me a PC like that. I worked hard for it.

Rant over :P

You're just jealous :D
