The Nokia E71 thread

So whats the verdict on this phone guys?

I can get it free on my upgrade and its the stand out phone. All reviews of it look great and I'm getting convinced by it.

its excellent. i'm tempted to say there's no better phone for the money.

If you mean the E71 (not the E63 just mentioned), my verdict on the E71 is 1) regarding it's excellent build quality: Guilty and 2) regarding it being an overall great phone: Guilty. I sentence my E71 to at least a couple of years of hard labor in addition to time already served :)

Really tempted by one of these but the 320x240 res is really putting me off for web browsing.

How is browsing the web in general?

Where's the cheapest place to buy one of these off contract?

On the Three website it's £275 from what I can see. If I did buy it on Three, how much is unlocking and does the phone have any branding of any sort on it? (I hate how Orange etc. stick their logo on the casing)

Three charge £15 for unlocking so it's cheaper to buy it sim free.

Sim free it's around the £279 mark I think, there are a couple of places that will price match though e.g. Expansys. The cheapest option I've found so far is PAYG on O2, through CPW or e2save, iirc I was quoted £273.99, and told that most if not all 'O2' phones are not locked in the first place. Plus the sim comes with £10 credit.

The black is really a stand-out among the variations. I think my Grey Steel looks great, but I'd be tempted by the black if I were buying now.

There is a firmware update btw if you haven't noticed. Haven't installed it yet myself.

I've just received my E71 this morning and it's on Orange so the firmware is 100.07.76 and when I try to use Nokia Software update it says I've got the latest version. Do I need to change the product code thingy like I used to do on my N95 so that it thinks it's a generic phone and not an Orange one?

If it helps, this page on E71 Blog talks about changing the product code on NAM versions to get the 200 update. It's no longer a problem for NAM supposedly, but in any case the page tells you what product code to change to and how in order to fool NSU into giving the 200 update.

ed: Note that v200 does not allow unsigned software to be installed.

I am finally the owner of a lovely new E71, in the new Black colour scheme. Seriously how nice a device is it even just to hold! Only criticism about it's design is the fingerprint magnet that is the back of it, but that's hard to avoid I guess. Also, couldn't have hurt to have a higher resolution screen surely, but it's very good as it is.

Have also flashed to latest 200.xx.xxx firmware, all looks good so far :)

Anyone having any issues currently with theirs?

p.s. @ GreatWaves: not done it myself, but I have seen several sites that say the latest firmware is hackable atm :)

I got mine two days ago and loving it. Used to have N95 8GB, this is much better and for me, more pocketable as it is much slimmer.

I am using emoze to manage both my personel email and work email. And i am using GotoTalk to make Gtalk conversations. They both work great.

Spent a fortune on extras!

Still liking this phone a lot, Mailforexchange is finally working with the office mails too which is useful :D

My firmware is still sitting at 110.07.127

Is it worth updating this?

Had latest update for a couple of weeks or so. I've seen nothing to indicate that it wouldn't be good. Appears to be stabe. You also get I think it was two extra themes. The black one looks pretty good. I don't know what else new there might be... haven't really tried to look.

Just the issue that it won't allow unsigned software (a problem I've never run into anyway). Doohickey above suggests there may be hacks for that I guess.

Which product code did you use? I've just tried using 0559585 but Nokia software updater said that there's no update available for my phone. (it's a black E71 on Orange, still on the 100 firmware though)

Yep, I do believe that is the one I used, should update just fine to the latest firmware :)

On a side note, I was pleasantly surprised that these Black E71s don't have the Orange logo stamped on the casing somewhere!
