**EMPIRE TOTAL WAR**

I checked with the retail shop down town here in Hong Kong, the game won't be arriving until the 4th.

Checked out some of the game video, saw blocks of land armies being moved from one spot to another. When they came to fighting against each other, how victory was being determined? I couldn't make out, is that a roll-die approach that the game engine take to decide which side actually win?

In Rise of Nations for instance, I can micro-manage a group of Bowmen to fire upon an enemy group of Pikemen or command a group of Hoplite to fight against a group of Calvary unit. Adn the outcome can be controlled by me.

The approach in this game, is that outcome determined by my move or the player just move the units and let the game engine to determine who wins?

I would have thought it'll depend upon the unit stats, such as their skill in melee, any armour they might be wearing, its morale, unit size, proximity to general, its current fitness and its formation and postition on the land (i.e. fighting downhill would give you an advantage) etc

Ive got this pre-ordered but have never played any of the TW games before, Ive read they are both "Real Time" and "Turn based" - Can someone please explain how this works?

Thanks.

You have two parts of the game,

Stratagy Map - Turn Based. Here you move your armys around the world deciding who to attack, who to allie and where to trade.

Pic of Rome: Total War

Battles - Real Time. Take control of your units and face off against an enemy army, like in the demo.

Thanks for that.

So what percentage of gametime is Turn based and how much is real time?

Just bought a copy of the special forces edition at a supermarket about five minutes ago so it's out there people! Not sure if it will activate yet though as won't get a chance to install till later

It's totally up to you in single player. You can spend as much time on the map as you like in your turn, as there isn't a turn time limit. The only real time aspect is when you engage in a battle via the campaign map. So if you avoid battles, then most of your game time will be on the turn based campaign map.

Personally I spend more time on the campaign map in previous total wars. I like to tweak various cities, micro manage spending/taxes/governers. So its probably 70% turn based and 30% real time.

However that is my playing style, some people might set their cities to auto manage, and just concentrate on recruiting armies and expanding and declaring war, which would mean their likely to see more like 30% turn based and 70% real time, as they are actively looking for battles

Hopefully that makes sense!

also if you just want to play RT battles, you can just play 'quick battles' and pick the enemy forces etc but then you miss out half of what makes TW games so great! :D

btw you can pick up Medieval II Total War for under £5 from a well known tinternet site , a Total bargain for those who havent sampled it..

im close to cracking and ordering from steam !! but its so expensive and 7hrs from release !!

This is terribly sad, but I've made sure that my vpn is properly working so I can start the preload before I get home from work :D.
