Brake pads replacement .. really?

we've already agreed this

so i'll ask again, ring courtenay and ask how much a pair of replacement AP rotors are for the 6 pot kit. Im not interested in replacement OE parts. You have the good grace to "LMAO THATS FOR THE CALIPERS AS WELL !!"

So ring them, and find out how much a replacement pair of AP Racing 362mm discs are. They are approximately a grand. Oh and you wont find the price on the website either..

jesus some people need to learn to read

We get it, you're cool because you have big fancy brakes and pay a lot for replacement parts.

No £"$*)(£*$)(£

Where did i say these were my brakes ?

I commented that the kit was expensive, and must be as expensive as porche stuff.

And now everybodys jumped on me calling me a liar, and then quoting prices for all sorts of different things as an example why im wrong.

If people hadnt have taken exception when i said that Replacement AP Racing 362mm discs are a grand, we wouldnt have been having this discussion.

I was laughing at that kit not at you :P

Hey at least its not like the pads I use on the race bike, they only last 3-4 race weekends, which works out at between 500 and 1000 miles for a set of front brake pads. :D

because brake pads are cheaper than transmission components?

Oh silly me!:o I forgot transmissions are not designed for engine braking.

Why do you think there are signs saying "Engage low gear now" on steep hills?

Imo, Its potentially a lot more expensive to not engine brake. Hey! what would I know? :p

Fast fit places supply and fit on demand, so you just ask for a known brand, mintex, or pagid maybe. Then you get OE quality at little money. Or buy a set from Ford and get a a garage to fit them. Also brake pads really are a total doddle to fit, it takes a simple socket set, an allen key and a jack. It really is a no brainer. On cost of brake parts. My Audi A4 pads are £20 a set from a local independent supplier (They come in a sealed VAG box) and £110 from Audi. It is all about where you shop.

On the engine braking issue, engine braking works if you drive sensibly. If you smack your car into second gear at 60mph to slow down it will break. If you put it in second or third gear at say 30mph to crawl down a big steep hill, there is no problem. It won't damage the transmission, or the clutch or the engine. In fact you'll save fuel as for the full time your feet as off the gas, the engine stops the injectors firing. Therefore you get free mileage.

The base spec aka cheap-o mintex and pagid pads and those £20 jobbos you get from a local independent are horrid things so hence my comment that good quality pads and fast fit places simply don't add-up.

Yes if the op could even remove a wheel he would fit them himself but he can't so thats not exactly a good idea.

Nothing like a bit of brake fade from sitting on the foot brake down a hill!

this thread is amazing.

engine braking where necessary might be why ive had almost 40k miles from my ebc yellow "race" pads and get such good mpg from my old golf.

i ordered another set of pads yesterday, a 30% off offer was on so i got another set sharpish becuase the ones for my car can be a pain to get hold of

Meh, I took my ST to the garage near my work. Even then I thought £40 was steep for some front pads but that did include labour. £97 is even more of a rip!

Brakes are dead easy to do on a focus, as I found out when I did them on the missus' car a few weeks ago. They had been on for 35k from new and she was complaining that they weren't as good as they once were - upon investigation they appeared to be a little past their best ;). I bought a Mintex brake box from an ebay shop which included discs and pads for £36 delivered (bargain!) and got them fitted.

A few pic's, so you get the idea..............

First of all, get it like this:

These were the old pads that you can see through the caliper. These are absolutely knackered.

Photo0318.jpg

Caliper and old pads off. Caliper is held onto carrier by two allen bolts and the pads just unclip.

Photo0313.jpg

Comparison of old pads and new pads. :o

Photo0312.jpg

New pads and disc fitted.

Jobs a good un.

Hope this helps a little. :)
