Down load HWMonitor and GPU-z. Set GPU-z to log the temps of your gpu and then minimise it to the system tray. This will give you a log of temperatures and clocks so you can check if its overheating. There was/is an issue with Nvidia 8000 series GPUs where they tend to die. So if I were you, Id look up some info about that. im pretty sure in saying, dell extened the warraty by +1 year. Also, is it just COD or does it do it in other games?

Hope this helps!

I only play COD4 so I'm not sure whether this happens on other games. What temp should the GPU suppose to be running at and what temp qualifies it to be overheating? At the moment I am using it for web browsing and the GPU is at 66 degrees.

mmmmm, anything above 90 is dodgy, above 100 is bad for your computers health. My first DV5's GPU hit 106 degrees on the day i bought it, needless to say, it went back! Anywho, I'd look up some info about 8000 series GPU failures, signs of how they happen, and see if your syptoms match up.

Also try some synthetic benchmarks and see if that crashes it!

Does any one know if you can buy the GPRS card / and bluray drive for the M1530 from Dell?

As ive had a look on the parts site and cant find any thing.

Thanks

Andy

I know the drive it uses is a Panasonic Superdrive UJ-225 (DPN RX602 Dell Partnumber)

Can you buy these drives?

Thanks

HI, I am new to the site. I work tech support with a company and I have a user that is currently running a Dell XPS M1530. This machine originally came with Vista loaded. I have rolled it back to XP. Everything was working fine until I joined it to our network (domain login set up), then he came back to me the next day saying that it takes forever to log out of the machine and to put it to sleep. I am thinking that this has something to do with the power management drivers but not sure. Has anyone else ran into this issue?

to give a little bit of background along with this issue.
Before i was able to install xp i had to set a setting back in the bios (forget with out looking it up) for it to install xp. I then had taken care of all the driver issues that came up (which I have found with in this forum). I have no "yellow ?'s" in device manager. The machine says that everything is working fine. The only issue I have ran into is the extra time it takes to log out and shut down.
Any Help would be greatly apprciated.

dont buy a dell! as soon as you leave it on the desk it will sprout legs and run to the kitchen to get a knife to kill you with!!!!!!!!!!

I know what you mean but to be honest, Dell's are excellent systems as far as performance and value for the dosh are concerned.

I have had one issue with my XPS M1530 so far in the space of about a year and it was the DVDR drive going bad. One email was all it took to Customer Support and they had a tech call at my home 2 days later to replace the defective DVDR drive under warranty completely free of charge.

For this reason alone - The quality of tech support you get from Dell, I would have no hesitation in purchasing another one from them in the future. ;) :D

I've been looking at the XPS 15" and Studio 15"/17" Dells. An XPS laptop seems to cost more than a Studio laptop of a similar spec. Is the extra money being spent on a slightly better graphics card?

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: Really? ive had nothing but hell from them, i payed £300 for them to replace a Graphics card which overheated due to a bad design, when they sent it back to me they had broken the mobo, they then refused to replace it or refund me and the man on the phone was VERY aggressive they have subsequently ignored all letters and e-mails... me not a happy bunny!:(

My 1530 has become very annoying lately and I hope you guys can help.

I'm experiencing a particularly loud HDD. It will be quiet for long periods of time, then it will go crazy for a few minutes, making typical HDD calculation noises (don't know how else to explain this) but loudly.

I don't know how if this is a recent problem or not, because in the whole year that I have had the laptop I have rarely used it in silence (listening to music / playing games). However recently I've been going to the library to do uni work, and in the silence it is very noticable, even from others sitting nearby.

Any explanations / solutions? Thanks

I've got a weird thing with mine. I once tried to hook it up, ages ago, to my philips 9632.... for some reason I could NOT get it to fill the entire LCD screen, regardless of what I did in Nvidia control panel to say otherwise.

Anyone else encountered this?

I seem to have a problem with mine at the moment i can't get on the internet even though i have a great connection with my wireless router.

How are the graphic options holding up for present day standards around £600-700?

New M1530 limited to 8400M GS 128MB
Some refurbished models listed 256MB graphics so assuming 8600GT

And as no Blue-ray upgrade listed is that feature even supported by 8x00 range?

Hi,

Sorry for the epic bump here but my friend has this laptop and has installed Win7 64b last night.

After all going fine the laptop didn't recognize the 8600M GT graphics card so he downloaded the newest version from Nvidia 195.16 (iirc)

Anyway, now it appears to work for a time then cause a black screen for 5-10 seconds and then come back with "Driver failed to initialize" error message. It does this every so often and is getting on his boobies.

Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you resolve it? I can't find anything from searching and it's annoying me as I've heard of this type of issue before on similar nvidia cards and laptops.

Anybody experiencing battery issues with the M1530? I bought mine in April 2008 and in the last month the battery wouldn't charge above about 6%. Naturally rather annoying as I couldn't use it as a laptop! At first I assumed it was that the battery was dead, so I bought a new one.

I got a new battery, plugged it in and noticed that on the battery indicator it said 'Plugged in, not charging'. Turns out after a quick google that this is not an uncommon problem.

I managed to fix it after someone recommended flashing the bios back to the older A09 version, it worked! Now charging!

Just thought I'd put this here incase anyone else was having the same problem.

EDIT - Link to A09 bios - http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R193896&SystemID=XPS_M1530&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=14338&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=5&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=267480
