Civic Type R, the proper one...

I take it you've driven both petrol and diesel? As you well know I drive a 530d and a 530i and the 530i is just... so much more enjoyable to drive. I'd pick a 320d over a 320i because 4 pot petrol engines have never been BMW's finest hour but once you get to the 6 cylinder petrols, no diesels please, thanks.

Have you driven the more recent revisions of the engines ? I have driven both and the newer 3L petrol is not a million miles away from yours yes it revs a bit harder higher up the revs and with a raised rev limit however almost all the extra power is at the upper end of the revs and even then it certainly doesn't feel 40bhp better off. The reviews I have read have been along the same lines.

The newer 3L diesels are a lot better than the older revisions more power and torque all across the whole rev range and a much bigger jump in performance compared to the difference between the new/old petrol. Even the current x20ds put out almost the same power and torque as the old 3L diesels.

I think it would be a very tough call between the current x30d over the x30i as a everyday car I do think the x30d is better even more so when you consider a 20-25% performance increase from a remap. I don't think it will be long until like Mercedes BMW offer remaps which do not affect the warranty.

I would say when on a twisty road keeping the engine on the boil and driving towards the limits of handling the petrol is the better car you can't beat the satisfaction of slotting in another gear just off the rev limiter you will never get this in a diesel car IMHO. You however have to ask how often you actually get the chance to drive like this.

If I get within 70% I consider that a result. :p

I agree that marketing will have got their hands on the figures, they'll have done the same for the diesel. But if you're only getting 28mpg combined out a car rated for 40mpg combined, then take it back to BMW under warranty and get it fixed.

/rain man :D

I wonder what's different between the 325i and 330i, given that they produce 218hp and 272hp respectively...

Yesterday was a bad day, my boss said he wanted me to buy a brand new car. I explained that was just throwing money down the drain and something with 5k miles on it IS brand new. He wasn't having any of it.

So, I threw a strop and walked out of his office. And now we're not talking :D

Not sure how thing is going to turn out. I was effectively getting a car that had just lost £10,000 depreciation in a very short space of time thinking that was a good idea but Boss man seems to want to waste money.

Oh dear. :(

Perhaps he wants a warranty in which case a remap would be out of the question also?

A lot of dealers offer a remap from a 3rd party and turn a blind eye to them for warranty work. A work mate got his 535d remapped at the dealer.

I wouldn't be suprised if BMW were to start offering something along the lines of a warranted M Sport tunning package for turbo models where they change the map. The profit margins in remaps are big and with people not changing cars as often a good way for a cheap performance increase and BMW to make a few more pennies.

Hold on a sec, your boss is the one buying the car? And you threw a strop because he wanted final say in how you spent his/her money?

Might not be the right thread but I didn't see the need to start a new one.

I currently have a Focus ST170 which I have had from new and really enjoyed but ifs getting on a bit now (52 plate). Anyhow I have toyed with a few cars when I change in about 3 months but I aren't buying new this time.

Was wondering what people thought of the Civic Type-R, was thinking of looking for something about a year old, any good?
