Ex-pats

Are you in Dalian? I'm across the water in Qinhuangdao. Been here permanently since beginning of 2006, although spent 2 years here before then.

I've just come back from a week in UK and stocked up on loads of cheese, English sausages, and coffee. These are either impossible to find here or incredibly expensive.

I am indeed in Dalian, I'd kill for some sausages just now. The few places round here have all dried up lately, and I've got no more people visiting me in the next 4 months, so I see a lot of rice in my future...

What are you doing over here anyway? I've been considering what to do after graduating, looking for ways to get back to China which aren't just teaching English!

I'm not currently an ex-pat but I lived in Vancouver for a little while back in 2006 and loved it, I still fully intend to go back out to Canada at some point in the future, not because Canada is so much better than the UK overall but it is different and has much greater opportunities for winter sports.

I love Canada, I intend to retire there/finish my career working there . (Although I'm only 20 so I may be getting ahead of myself a bit :p).

I spent 18 months in Stockholm 4 years ago. Best time of my life. Alas, contract ended and I came back to London.

I am in the process of migrating to Melbourne. Planned date is sometime in August 2009.

I did it the other way round, parents were ex-pats living in Belgium and I moved to the UK 10 years ago. I'd love to emigrate (brother has been living in Australia for 6 odd years now and loves it) but my wife is happy in the UK so it's a no-go.

Had an opportunity to move out to Bergen (Norway for those geographically challenged) last year but ended up passing. I now regret it every day.

Thats ashame, Norway is somewhere Id love to work if the money was right as its an expensive place to live.
I work for an oil and gas engineering company. Dont speak Thai but luckily most of the people in the office speak English!

Expensive is not a strong enough word. I went out there four times the past 15 months and not once have my taxi ride from airport to hotel not costed under £100. I went out to a nice Tapas restaurant not far from the harbor front and valiantly offered to pick up the tab for the four of us that went. £224 later..

I love how the Norwegians can come out of pubs/clubs closing times, all drunk, but then neatly form a line to buy some grub from the hotdog vendor.

What a great place indeed.

I lived in Norway for 10 years, but fully intend to move abroad again in the not too distant future. Current plan is to move to Vancouver in 5 or so years time.

Hey there I am just wondering if there are any other ex-pats on these boards ??
I left the UK Jan 19th 2008, and currently live just out side Vancouver B.C as much as I like living here I am really starting to missing the UK.

So were are you living now ??? do you miss the UK ??

I've been living on the North Shore in Vancouver since September '08 - was originally planning on going home this September, but now looking at extending my stay. Apart from the family and friends back home, I'm not missing anything.

How do/did you guys find living out there? How is the job situation? Are you guys living on a visa, or do you have permanent residency. My GFs brother and sister-in-law are moving out there this summer, so we are hoping to visit them next year. What do you miss about the UK? Is anything miles better here, or anything miles better there? :)

What do you folks do for work out wherever you are in the world? I assume you can speak to local language?

Working in IT related field for a global company so everyone speaks English :)

My Czech is pretty bad to be honest although I blame that down to a lack of motivation since I am already busy in work and learning Russian & Thai at the same time. It helps that my flatmate is Czech and my Girlfriend can speak Czech so I very rarely have to use anything more than very basic Czech phrases to get through the day.

Youre living in the Czech Republic, but trying to learn Russian and Thai (couldnt get 2 more different languages!) at the same time? Mental! Why??
