Windows 7 7068 First impressions

After using Windows 7 for a few days now I have to say I am hugely impressed.
I've gone from XP, straight to W7 (never had Vista, just played a bit with it on other machines) and so it's such a jump up in terms of the visuals, features and general feel. Generally loving it so now this is now my main OS.

And now I've just found the START+TAB 3D Flip thing which makes it even nicer

It's interesting how well people have taken to the Windows 7 betas. If it wasn't for Vista then we wouldn't have any of the driver or software compatability we're currently enjoying now.

If we'd never had Vista then it's very likely everyone would be moaning that the beta had crap application and driver compatability.

you're a 19 year old student. HOW CAN YOU AFFORD A TWO THOUSAND POUND COMPUTER?

I worked hard for it?

I don't get thrown money.

And i've fixed W7, it was the steering wheel drivers that were causing it , used the Windows Update ones and its fine.

Just the disconnecting in Live for Speed :( very pretty tho. Nearly swayed me away from OS X.

Oh and for the people wondering why I didn't build a i7 PC:

My MBP has not had ONE issue, its rock solid. I've been using windows and OS X side by side since the beginning. OS X (for me) is the better system, hence why I pay the premium for the apple hardware. Oh and the craftsmanship on the Mac Pro case is ridiculous. Its made out of 2-3mm brushed ally. I'd pay £300 just for the case!!!

To be fair it's a beta. In fact 7068 is a leaked daily build with minimal stability testing, in effect a "beta" of the beta. You're trying to install it on a Mac with customised Apple hardware and BIOS. It's not really suprising that you're having problems. I dare say Apple compatability testing isn't very high on the MS internal test schedule for a leaked build.

Tell you what, it installs on the vast majority of PCs much quicker than OSX does... Oh hang on, OSX doesn't install on a regular PC. Apple force you to buy their own overpriced hardware to be able to do that and take anyone who produces a non "Apple" PC capable of running OSX to court...

Some might suggest you've dropped in from the Apple forum to do a bit of trolling... Not I obviously

I don't troll. As above i've used the systems side by side for years, over some of the people on these forums I have a large experience to comment on the differences and which I prefer. I prefer OS X and i've also managed to sway a few of my mates to buy Mac Books. So if the largely un-informed can make a relatively un-biased opinion then I think thats fair.

And yes I know its a BETA, I wasn't having a good day that day :p Its fine now, some buggy drivers was the issue :) Oh and its not customized hardware, its just X58 in a different layout with standard workstation parts. EFI is becoming mainstream now overtaking BIOS so microsoft have to cater for it. And I did another install test on my MBP today, Windows took 26 mins, OS X took 18 mins...

Edit: There always seems to be a divide between apple and windows users, I was booted up in W7 in uni and two Macbook owners came up and said OMGZ, Windows on a MBP are you mental?!? I was like err no, I use it for what I need, if I need windows to do CAD, so be it :/

I buy what I think is best. I've been researching the Mac Pro and deciding on my purchase for the last 6 months, I'm not stupid with money, so don't insinuate that I am. :) (Not directed at you, Athanor :))

So if there's not an element of customisation to the hardware/EFI on a Mac how come Apple force you to buy their overpriced hardware and you can't just install OSX on a vanilla PC like you can Windows?

Yep, Vista took the hit so W7 looks good... :)

*shrug*

Im going on that its a set of hardware they have to code for not millions of configurations meaning everything can be developed to a higher standard for that set of hardware meaning its more secure, faster and efficient.

I wouldn't particularly install OS X on a PC laptop anyway, they are all bricks which are either bigger or weigh more :/

And for the real anoraks in the film Wall-E, when he finishes his solar charging session, the mac startup tune is played, ha ha :D

I'd wait if I was you. 7068 is relatively old now and the RC build is likely to be released in the next few weeks with a whole lot more testing, stability and speed behind it.

to late buddy got it last night... great improvment from 7000 which i had on dual boot. will be looking foward to the RC when it arrives! got to say... microsoft are going in the right direction with windows 7!

Complete twaddle. There's a whole bunch of laptops made by people other than Apple that are smaller, lighter and more feature rich than even the Macbook Air. Take a look at the 10" Samsung NC10 http://www.pocket-lint.com/reviews/review.phtml/3789/4813/samsung-nc10-netbook-pc-review.phtml "netbook" for example, runs W7 stunningly well, makes Mac Books look like bloated behemoths and is only £300. How about the Sony VAIO range (especially the "P")? For pretty take a look at the Dell Adamo http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/dell-adamo-hands-on/

There are strengths and weaknesses to OSX and Windows and that's a good thing, Apple keeds MS on it's toes and vica versa. Without the competition neither company would have to "try" and that would be a bad thing.

Macs are beautifully designed and built machines in the main although there does seem to be a stange kind of "snobbery" that comes from a chunk of Apple owners that irritates the rest of the world :D

went from 7057? to 7068 via the upgrade option it went without a hutch but omg a clean install takes like 20mins

Upgrade takes over an hour
The upgrade option is somewhat "broken" at the moment and takes forever, I expect we'll see it improve from RC onwards as it gets focus. Clean install, as you say seems fine to me given that I don't have an urge to reinstall my OS weekly 20mins once a year or so if fine by me :)

It's interesting to see how far it's moved on from 7000, although I still think 507 and 68 feel a little slower than the 7000 build (although that could just be me). I suspect theres not been any real focus on speed for these builds. Imterim builds tend to be for fixing bugs and refining features, hopefully RC1 will give us back the speed of 7000 with the features set of 7068+

I'd be suprised if we don't see the RC build in the next couple of weeks.
