Israel stands ready to bomb Iran's nuclear sites

threatening is the operative word. Its grandstanding. Iran will not do it, why would they?? If they did, they would be obliterated via Nuclear attack. Why cant people get some sense behind this.
The profileration of Nukes is the real issue.

I agree that it's grandstanding. But Iran is just crazy enough to do it.

People thought that Hussain was grandstanding until it was too late to prevent his invasion of Kuwait.

You're right.

You're the ones that just kill 700k innocent Iraqi's instead.

No we didn't.

If you go to www.iraqbodycount.org, you will learn two very interesting facts:

  • The current civilian death toll in Iraq stands at 91,466 – 99,861

  • The overwhelming majority of these people were killed by insurgents and terrorists from (a) local tribes, factions and religious groups; (b) countries outside Iraq

Here's a list of the most recently recorded deaths:

''Wiped off the Map' – The Rumor of the Century'

'So what did Ahmadinejad actually say? To quote his exact words in Farsi:

*snip*

Yes, I've read this before. Please note: I did not claim that Ahmadinejad has threatened to wipe Israel off the map, so your extensive quote is irrelevant.

In any case, the point is moot because Ahmadinejad admitted saying those words himself:

Iran's president has defended his widely criticised call for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

Attending an anti-Israel rally in Tehran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his remarks were "just" - and the criticism did not "have any validity".

[...]

Tens of thousands of Iranians took part in the rally in Tehran which Iran organises every year on the last Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan to show solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.

Shouting "Death to Israel, death to the Zionists", the protesters dragged Israeli flags along the ground and then set them on fire.

Many carried posters and placards sporting the slogan "Israel should be wiped off the map". Joining the protest, Mr Ahmadinejad said: "My words were the Iranian nation's words.

"Westerners are free to comment, but their reactions are invalid," Mr Ahmadinejad told the official Irna news agency.

BBC.

Having milked this populist statement for all it was worth, Ahmadinejad later contradicted himself in a press conference with an Iranian tv channel, where he claimed that he meant something different:

Press TV: So you did not threaten to wipe Israel off the map as an Iranian leader? That we will wipe Israel off the map?

Ahmadinejad: No. We say that the people of Palestine should have rights and when the people of Palestine exercise this right, this will happen. Where is the Soviet Union? The Soviet Union has been wiped off the map. What happened to the Soviet Union? The decision of the people, the vote of the people. When the people of the Soviet Union, the Russian people, were allowed to decide to take charge of their destiny, the Soviet Union disappeared.

The Zionist regime is an artificial regime… a fictitious regime. You brought people from different parts of the world and you have built this state. No, that cannot last, it is not sustainable. If they do not listen to our solution, this will happen one day.

Source.

It seems that truth is not a highly prized commodity in Muslim nations.

he said his remarks where just, he didnt say the quote of 'wipe them off the map' where just. his remarks where different.

they guy was probably asked if he still stand by what he said before about the regime, but his answer was intepreted as him agreeing with the false claim he made.

Only thing i have to say is good luck to Israel because they sure as hell are going to need it. But of course they have the Americans backing them so theres no doubt that they will win in the end:rolleyes:. But if they do get into a war with Iran then it wont be a quick war...it will be one that will go on for some time and there will be some serious casualities from both sides as Iran is no Iraq.

The real problem is geography as Iran doesn't share a border with Israel. Iran would certainly lose an air war and so would need to attack usng ground forces. However to do that they need an ally to allow all of their troops in. They don't have the naval forces to do coastal invasion without their ships being wiped out be Israeli air and naval assets.

So what route would a ground invasion take? Do you really see Turkey or Iraq allowing an Iranian army to traverse their lands?

It's a widely known fact that all Muslims dislike or even hate Israeli's/Jews to some extent and that at some point it's all going to come to a head where the Muslim-populated countries surrounding them come together and act with force.

What Israel is proposing to do is a means of showing that they're not weak and they have the ability to defend or attack. With this in mind it will get/has the attention of the US/UK and we may end up involved in it, supporting Israel. I can't see why the US/UK would support the Muslim "side", where eradication of the Jews and conversion of everyone on the planet is something they believe so strongly in and have already begun.

Although I am not a supporter of the "war on terror" I am 100% supportive of non democratic states not having nukes.

**** up Iran before they blow up the world with me in it.

Pakistan have nuclear wepaons and are Muslim but they are pretty stable (until recently). I don't see them as a concern.

imo it proves we don't have some anti muslim vendetta, we just don't want to be nuked!

Maybe it's not to do with religion but Iran's threat to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth?

Why do people always play the race/religion card

Unfortunately the majority of wars/conflicts in the middle east are heavily influenced by religion and it wouldn't be a shock if this was the case here.

At present it's very unlikely the IDF could carry out an attack on all the nuclear related targets in Iran. As other people have said it would take a large percentage of the IDF's aircraft to carry out the attack (we're talking 100+ aircraft) and they just don't have the air to air refueling capability to support anywhere near that many aircraft.

They tried to resolve this in early 2008 by requesting to purchase KC-767 aerial refueling aircraft from the US. This was declined by then President Bush.

Israel aren't planing to invade just air strike and get out. Iran wont invade Israel as it would lose it's air force and invading a nuclear power that can easily hit your capitol and every military base you own is a very bad idea.
