Greatest game companies?

The best one imo:
Microprose: Brought us civilization, transport tycoon, rollercoaster tycoon, railroad tycoon and Star trek: Birth of the Federation.

Then in no particular order:

Valve ( speaks for itself)
Rockstar (north) ( GTA, and erm, GTA :p)
Westwood ( C&C and RA series, speaks for itself)
Ensemble studio's ( Microsoft) ( I was blown away by age of empires initially, and enjoyed AOE2 extensively for years and years, played in a clan for ages too.)
Maxis ( sim city games are superb, and let's be honest, the first sims was decent and enjoyable)
ID soft ( Quake 3 engine brought so many good games inc. Mohaa, CoD, Wolvenstein, etc., also commander keen 4 was the first ''proper'' ( eg. not tetris/paratrooper/frogger) game I had ).

not one part of you thinks that the games are like 20 times bigger then in the past yet don't take 20 times as long so when i say rushed i'm wrong?

You're not taking into account that the development teams are probably at the very least 20 times larger, so a lot more work gets done in that same time frame.

<edit> I guess one fanboy better say it ;)

Squaresoft.

Most of those already mentioned but would also have to add Origin Systems (of Wing Commander, Strike Commander and Janes flight sim fame).

Honourable mention for for Digital Integration who developed the F16 Combat Pilot and later Tornado sims and the similar named (but unrelated) DiD who did (ha!) EF2000 and Total Air War.

Ocean - to many games to mention
Odin Software - Robin of the Wood, Arc of Yesod / Nodes of Yesod
Rainbow Arts - Turrican
Psygnosis - Shadow of the Beast
FTL - Dungeon Master / Chaos Strikes Back
Image Works / Bitmap Bros - Bloodwych / Speedball / Xenon 2
Bullfrog - Dungeon Keeper / Magic Carpet

Relic (Homeworld series, CoH)
Capcom (So, so many awesome games, Street Fighter Series in particular)
Rockstar (GTA series of course)
SNK (they're no Capcom, but the gaming world wouldn't be the same without em, frankly, Capcom wouldn't be as good without em)

What about Bethesda for Morrowind and Oblivion?

I would also put up Infocom - they were true pioneers in the early days of PC gaming.

Ultimate: Play The Game (Yes, I know Rare have already been posted but these guys need a mention)

Man, am I glad someone else knows where Rare came from.

Right from their founding, ULTIMATE output some of the finest software ever to grace the 8bit home micro scene. Saber Wulf is a legend that will never die, Knight Lore is another game that every games player should be greatful for, its Isometric graphics paving the way for such classics as Batman and Head over Heals from Ocean.

CD Projekt - for doing The Witcher enhanced edition for free and giving away the soundtrack.

Stardock - GalCiv, Sins, and generally being top blokes about copy protection and support

microsoft sold the xbox 360 at a loss, nintendo sold wii at a profit, looking at it like that microsoft is a much better company imo.

eh? I would have thought the point of a business was to make money, so looking at that statement, how can the company that made a loss be better?

Anyway, I'd go for Westwood, Valve, Sega, Nintendo, Bullfrog and Team 17.

Bepends on your definition of 'best'. Richest doesn't equal best in my book. EA, for example, are possibly the most profitable, but they consistently treat their customers like crap. I'd look at a great company as one that makes fantastic games, doesn't release them unfinished, continues to provide support for them, and treats their customers with respect.

EA are only a great company if you're a shareholder
