**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Just read on skysports that Gareth Barry is attracting interest from Arsenal...wasnt that the same as last yr when Liverpool were trying to get him and Arsenal showed some interest??.

At the moment seems like a rumour as there wasnt any sources cited...unless i missed it.

Question is do Arsenal need a player like him...or have we got enough players in that position??.

I think Barry would be ideal for Arsenal, ideal in both terms of the type of player he is and the fact that he's English and should add some mental toughness to them

Erm, YES? He'd be perfect. Experience, great knowledge of the English game, he could step in and do the right job instantly. He is exactly what is needed.

I wouldn't mind him because he'd be a far better DM than anything we've got atm (the selection of which is cack). He already knows the league which would be an advantage too. He's also played in Europe. It'd be a slight step up for him on both counts if he was to play for us, but not impossible. He was raring to go to Liverpool last year so he's ready for the challenge.

However, he isn't going to be cheap; also the fact he's English he'll be over hyped and over priced. I don't know who else to suggest but I don't think Wenger should break the bank for this particular player.

Tbh, I don't think Wenger will go for him, it'd "destroy" Denilson. :p

And that wouldnt be a neccessarily bad thing would it now??:p.

I heard in the region of £12mill for Barry but i doubt he will go for that cheap and i dont think Wenger will break the bank for him as well, as much as id love him to.

Id love to see him at Arsenal, if only to annoy my mate who supports Aston Villa:p...always harping on about how good he is...yes i know hes good as Liverpool were after him last yr.

Barry will be a lot cheaper this year due to him only having a year left on his contract.

He would be perfect for Arsenal and I would love to see him go there.

Only has a year left on his contract and Villa are willing to sell him if he wants to go, I think they appreciate what he's done for the club and are willing to let him go for a reasonable price (£9m would be fair imo.)

am I right in thinking they where asking nearer £16m or so last summer?

I'm sure he was over £10m last summer, but don't remember the amount.

I've seen him play a few times and I think he's way over rated, he had a good season last season and he's good on FM etc. but when you actually sit down and watch him you realise that he's not a special talent really, he's alright, but nothing to shout about.
That may be, but if the tabloids are right (which they never are) then for £6m I'd be willing to risk it.:)

They were after around 16-18m iirc. Benitez did his best to chuck about 78 different players into the deal which O'Neill laughed at :D

This is what I would do:

Sell:
Senderos
Silvestre
Diaby
Adebayor

Promote Full time to the 1st team squad:
Jack Wilshere

Make sure these 3 get good loan clubs:
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas
Emmanuel Frimpong
Francis Coquelin

I'd then sign 2 defenders, making sure at least one of them is good in the air, and a giant. I'd sign at least one DM, maybe 2, both need to have played at the highest level, and need to be around 27-29. Depending on Rosickynote's health another Midfielder or a winger in the Overmars role.

We would then play 4-3-3, Cesc in midfield with either Song/other 2 DM/ and then upfront, RvP, Arseshavin and Eduardo/Vela/BarTender. Could easily slip into a 4-5-1 underpressue.

I'd want JW to play in at least 20 games, maybe starting 5, he is going to be a MONSTER player.

Why would Benitez do it though, it doesn't make sense, Alonso has probably been their best player :s
Benitez doesn't want Alonso to go. Its upto Alonso to decide if he wants to stay or not. No point in keeping a player against his will.

If he does want to go, I can understand as he was treated like a bargaining stick last summer. And its also highly unlikely he would move to another English team, it would most deffinetly be to a Spanish or Italian team.

JW will be the best English player of his generation, he looks just like Cesc, maybe even further advanced for his age, he is truly something to be very excited about. Think he's too small to risk next season, but by 19 / 20 I can see him in the starting XI

What do the Sunderland fans think of having a Geordie as possible manger?

every one of the thousands of sunderland fans who attend games who were live and work in South Tyneside were born closer the newcastle than Steve Bruce

besides he had no problem letting Birmingham hump them 5-1 in the FA cup

I don't think he'll grow a great deal in height, and is already more than strong enough with and without the ball. I'd play him next year.

He does need to improve his tackling, and stop going to ground as much as he does in the tackle as he tends to dive in. The weight on some of his passes are out of this world.
