**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Everyone is dissing City here but looking at the squad us blues have a good team, we havent had any time to spend our new money (had january but not that long is it to fill what you need) and we have had a lot of injuries especially in the later end of the season.

And TBH i dont see Villa doing nearly as good next season as they did this season, so maybe Barry has got it right to move.

Why not? He's better than any of your CMs apart from Cesc, I think he'd be ideal.

He's certainly a step up, although there are better CM's around, the question is, will Wenger be able to get any of them for around £10m and will they be good in England, that's why he's Arsenal's manager though and not me

Unless he's heard a definite "not interested" from Rafa and Wenger then I think it's clear to say Barry is a money grabber.

I bet O'Neil is fuming, he's got a better chance at the CL if he just stayed at Villa.

Really strange decision from Barry if you ask me.

If City spend an arm and a leg this season then I'd say City have a better chance to get into the CL.

If I'm brutally honest though, if they're going to spend an arm and a leg this season and try to get into the Champions League - they won't have Barry in their squad, certainly not a first team regular anyway.

There are better players out there a the club with supposedly "infinite amounts of transfer money".

It's the fact he's chosen City over Liverpool/Arsenal, not that City are rubbish.

Ah of course, he knew you thought you think villa won't do as well next season so that's his reason for going to city, it's all clear to me now. :D

You'll still do bugger all next season, your manager isn't good enough imo.

Of course there are better CMs around but Arsenal have to be realistic, he's probably one of the best available that they could attract to the club.

A proven premiership player who's also English and in the international setup, doesn't usually come as cheap as the prices being touted about for Barry.

Wenger should have snapped him up, but I just hope now he's got someone else up his sleeve. Veloso or Cana maybe? and even then, are they better than Barry?

Cana has CL experience, he was decent vs Liverpool earlier in the season and scored a great goal too. I think Cana would be better than Barry, but I'm sure he said today/recently that he's staying with Marseille, but as we all know that means nothing. There's a few more options that are better than Barry but I've just been to the dentist and I'm in agony so I am not in any mood to think about anything and type them out

Yeah I really rate Cana, but I also rate Barry as he's spent all his career in a better league. Both have versatility though which would be useful.

I guess we could speculate all day long about who the best CM for Arsenal would be, but I still think Barry would fit in great there.

I personally think he'd be perfect for the role too, but if City and Liverpool were in the picture I don't think Arsenal ever had any chance of getting him in all honesty.

Looks like Villa will need to rethink their advertising

As someone said above, it's not about ambition it's about money. Reminds me of Lucas Neill. Pleaded for a move to Liverpool then went to West Ham when they offered more money.

12 million quid for 29 year old distinctly average Gareth Barry?

Good business for Villa there, I bet O'Neil finds someone better and younger for less than that after he goes.

Hargreaves out until January
Sauce Me Baby

May mean we're going to be looking for another DCM or CM in the summer?

We can't rely on Giggs and Scholes for another year can we?? :(

You realise that is just publishing exerts from todays papers? Its NOT the club actually saying that

I had already seen that (from the Times) , but the Independant (edit - turns out it wasnt) from NewsNow was saying that he was doing light training before the CL final a few days ago....

Could have sworn it was a broadsheet, but cant find the source now (hmmm why does nearly everyone spell source wrong - I realise on purpose but still)

I know a few papers are saying Jan at best - if at all - and no we cant keep on relying on Scholes or Giggs, because of the unknown on OH maybe Fletcher will get more games until Jan - when the club should know more regarding Owen.

I dont think I imagined the article that didnt really tally with that Times article but maybe I did lol - dont think Fergie will strengthen that area of the team before he knows for definite the injury situation

Edit - you could well end up being right, without question - but until the club have actually confirmed it officially I will hope for better news later in the summer (:

Hargreaves was never realistically going to be fit for the start of the season it was always going to be more likely September/October. I think January is just a wild stab in the dark by the papers trying to put even more of a downer on UTD

The only defence you could give Barry was if it has been made clear to him that neither ourselves or Arsenal are interested anymore and he feels that after what's gone on at Villa over the last season, he can't stay there any more.

He'd have been a handy player to have in the squad but hopefully this will stop the constant Alonso rumours now.

I'm absolutely amazed that has gone through and so quickly as well. He must be on a huge wage, because that's a massive gamble with your career at such a late stage.
