The difference is that clubs don't have the £25m to spend on a player like Alonso. Don't get me wrong, he's a very good player but for £25m I would expect him to be banging in 15+ goals a year and weighing in with a lot of assists also. Maybea few years ago a player like Alonso would have gone for that fee but I can't see it in the current economic climate.
so for £18m-£20m you expect 8 - 10 goals a season? By your reckoning it must be only Lampard (who has age against him) who is worth anything like that
There arent that many central midfielders at all who seem to regularly bang in huge numbers of goals regularly, Gerrard was historically - but I still dont think thats where he has played this season for the most part.
Maybe its the EPL thats changing - as I cant think of any others that regularly score that many season after season, or look like doing so (maybe Fabregas even though he didnt get very many last season)
snip.
So explain how in his first season, when he was the ONLY transfer in, Utd win the EPL - and continue to do that three years in succession (not to mention 1 successful CL season, and another reasonable one)
Without doubt Carrick IS worth £18m ......and to me looks a bargain compared to Barry's £12m
I would also say that Hargreaves was worth the £18m last season alone - even though he only played 25 games. Of course you want a lot more, but IF due to no fault of anyone's - the injuries never completely heal - I would gladly accept having paid that £18m for the successes of that season, which OH played a major part in.
(If Utd where a smaller club with less money at hand then it would be a totally different thing - but they arent)
