**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

The difference is that clubs don't have the £25m to spend on a player like Alonso. Don't get me wrong, he's a very good player but for £25m I would expect him to be banging in 15+ goals a year and weighing in with a lot of assists also. Maybea few years ago a player like Alonso would have gone for that fee but I can't see it in the current economic climate.

so for £18m-£20m you expect 8 - 10 goals a season? By your reckoning it must be only Lampard (who has age against him) who is worth anything like that

There arent that many central midfielders at all who seem to regularly bang in huge numbers of goals regularly, Gerrard was historically - but I still dont think thats where he has played this season for the most part.

Maybe its the EPL thats changing - as I cant think of any others that regularly score that many season after season, or look like doing so (maybe Fabregas even though he didnt get very many last season)

So explain how in his first season, when he was the ONLY transfer in, Utd win the EPL - and continue to do that three years in succession (not to mention 1 successful CL season, and another reasonable one)

Without doubt Carrick IS worth £18m ......and to me looks a bargain compared to Barry's £12m

I would also say that Hargreaves was worth the £18m last season alone - even though he only played 25 games. Of course you want a lot more, but IF due to no fault of anyone's - the injuries never completely heal - I would gladly accept having paid that £18m for the successes of that season, which OH played a major part in.

(If Utd where a smaller club with less money at hand then it would be a totally different thing - but they arent)

oh my god, i almost choked on my brew...

did you just insinuate that Carrick was worth £18million?

true in the face of an £18 million Hargreaves, then relatively we have got more milage out of him...but...seriously? 18millions worth of talent inside Carrick? Never in a million years. He can look half decent when playing against 2nd rate opposition, when not under pressure, when he can take his usual 30minutes to turn with the ball - or instantly pass it straight back the way it came.

Thats what we spent 18million on.. a 3 yard return passer.. or someone who, in football manager terms, likes to "dwell on the ball"....i watched him get ripped to shreds by decent midfielders of Barcelona - as Carrick basically gifted Barca their first goal...through...dwelling on the ball... then proceed to have an absolute shocker, failing to make any decent tackles and mostly booting the ball off the pitch.

If thats what 18million buys, i must be worth at least 25 myself.

i think being wirth 18mill would be more towards the significant contribution he's made to the 3 league titles and champions league title we've won since he's been here to be honest.

People (Mancs) think Carrick's worth £18 yet Alonso isn't? :o

Carrick was a bit of a rip off, I think both players are worth £15m maximum. Man Utd fans do love Carrick but he has a lot of average games, I think he's probably 4th in line after the other Top 4 teams' respective players

Wow great way to prove he wasn't worth the money.... by picking out one bad game

Since signing Carrick we've won 3 league title, reached an FA Cup final, won the Champions League and reached another final not to mention the semi's in his first season

Since Carrick's signing we've had nothing but success so yes he's more than paid back the 18 million

aye carrick was not worth 18million. 12 would be a price id have paid for Carrick but personally i dont think hes all that, he just cant control the midfield in big games against big opposition, atleast a much younger Anderson whos developing his game at his age has some very controlling games, anderson is a prospect where carrick should be close to his peak but he just doesn't have it. Personally i cant wait for Hargreaves to be fit, Hargreaves, Anderson and Fletcher in the centre, enough graft and ability to out muscle and work any team. i was never a fan of Fletcher before this season but frankly i think hes been a hugely improved player this year.

Thing is, Alonso is probably worth 'only' £20mil if he was for sale. The Club doesn't want to sell him, hence the extra few mil required to prise him away....

If Alonso wants success though and to win consistantly he will ask for a move, therefore a few million taken off the amount required :D

You would get Barry for that amount (just) - so yur aiming for top of the mid table huh - good for you

Actually I dont think anyone has said that Alonso isn't worth 18 million, just not the 25 million originally suggested

There's no doubt at the time it looked an inflated price but his contribution has more than paid that fee off several times over in fact. I guess it's fair to say he's behind Gerrard, Lampard and Fabregas but I'd have him in my team ahead of the likes Alonso, Mascherano, Mikel & Ballack all day long

not form me at the moment, that seems quite an ugly central midfield currently. I don't want to just outwork people, I want composure and a bit of grace and guile. 2 of the 3 is fine but I wouldn't like to play all 3 consistently.

Carrick is now without doubt cemented himself into the first choice midfielder at the club so take Hargreaves out for him and you've got yourself your midfield 3 ;)

As for dominating games against the top teams I honestly cant say the last time I saw Lampard dominate a big game for Chelsea or Fabregas for Arsenal or dare I even say the messiah Gerrard for Liverpool. The day of Keane and Vieira and midfielders stamping their authority on games are very seldom these days

They are all similar kinds of players to each other fair enough - nothing like Carrick though - apart from being a "central midfielder".

Completely wrong comparison imo

Not completely the same but OH / Fletcher is nearer to Masch, Mikel and Ballack's style of play (and Essien is better than the lot of them, although Masch due to his age might become better in a few years)

Oh without doubt but there's always those that want to compare him with your Lampard's, Gerrard's and Fabregas' just to prove 'their' point

£. we report it in £ but Real paid now and then in euros so the world record is still zidane in the proper sense, we just see it differently due to the devaluation of the £

for instance; year A the exchange rate is 1.5 euros to the pound.

real sign someone for 75million euro's that gets reported as £50million

year B the exchange rate is 1 euro to the £.
real sign someone for 70m euros and it's reported as £70million.

so we see it as being worth more, but in the actual currency the transaction took place in deal A was still top.

It can't have been, the exchange rate in 2001 was 1.62ish so that would make it only £34m or so :)

Could well be wrong, but up until all the 'most expensive transfer talk' recently I'm sure I read 55, over the last 2 weeks though all I've heard is 73.5. No idea really. All that really matters is that Real love to spend a lot of cash!
