**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Could make it into a museum or better yet an amphitheater and Ashley try earn his freedom from the geordie fans...

Who would win out of Ashley and Barton...... only one way to find out :D

People would pay for that !

I don't think the club is a mess financially to be honest. The £200m pound debt etc. that Sky Sports reports is crap, there is no debt (yet!) except a £40m bank loan (although I've heard some doubt its even that big).

As for the club 'hemorrhaging' money, as all the papers are saying, well we're paying wages, big wow! (not a dig at you Baz but the papers who keep stressing this). If a new owner came in they'd be able to get shot of the high earners (and about 4 are out of contract anyway).

And as for the stadium, the club doesn't own the land it was built on, the council does.

The debt on the club currently is meaningless as the majority of that is a directors loan from Ashley which will be cleared if and when the club is taken over.

The football club is losing money and will lose even more now that it has been relegated. And because of the lack of clauses in contracts, even if you do manage to get shot of the high earners, you're going to still be paying a large percentage of their wages.

Regarding Alonso, I think £14m was the figure being quoted last summer, and while he's had a good season, he's also a year older and a year has ticked off his contract.

Could well be wrong, but up until all the 'most expensive transfer talk' recently I'm sure I read 55, over the last 2 weeks though all I've heard is 73.5. No idea really. All that really matters is that Real love to spend a lot of cash!

Here's my guesswork:
The only reason this figure of €55m came about is due to some complete retard somewhere doing a 'backwards conversion'. i.e. they looked up Zidane's transfer in pounds as it was in 2001, OK that's ~£47m or so. They've then looked up the current exchange rate of ~1.16 euros to the pound and multiplied it by that.

With financial genius like that, they should be in charge of RBS.

That was what Arsenal were reportedly willing to pay. Juve offered closer to £16m but we were asking for something in the region of £20m.

He's still at a great age, has 3 years left on his contract and the club after him are known for paying ott. Anything under £25m would be cheap.

25m puts him in the same range as players like Gerrard and Essien who i dont think he quiiitteee matches.

Gerrard for £25m? I really don't think so.

Essien was bought at a time when Chelsea were the only team really competing for him. In the modern environment his price tag would have soared.

I don't remember Alonso been valued at £20m last year, more like £12, but liverpool were hoping £16m to cover the barry transfer. The real reason the deal didn't go through was because Barry didn't sign- it had nothing to do with clubs not matching the liverpool fee, or that Rafa didn't want him out- which he did.

If Gerrard were to leave (which he won't) then it would not only be for more than £25m but it would probably be for more that what Real had just paid for Kaka.

Transfer fees are dependent on a lot of things; Real paid £20m for Diarra 6 months ago and Alonso is considerably better than he is, we don't want to sell him, he is at a great age and still has 3 years left on his deal. Alonso won't come cheap.

@ Owen: we turned down £15.5m from Juve. We wanted £18-20m for Alonso. The reason why he didn't go was because nobody matched our fee, it's simple. We were even trying to sign Barry after we didn't sell Alonso too.

No club is ever going to offer more than Kaka just fetched, for Gerrard.

That's no slight on either player's ability, just the honest truth.

isnt it generally true that players are more expensive in Jan anyway due to limited availability in the middle of the season , and also considering cup-tied players etc etc

I thought that was a rule of thumb anyway

Diarra is good but not that good - and I still dont think Alonso will go for anything significantly over £20m at best (if he goes at all)

Hm I'd hope Gerrard wouldn't fetch more than £40m at his age, he'd have practically no sell-on value so it'd be a bold move by any club.
