Is it worth getting GTA 4?

I really like GTA4. Yes it's hard to run but it does look good. I would say your system won't really be upto it.

When I had an e2180 @3.2ghz and a 4850 512mb, the benchmark scored 31fps on auto settings at 1680x1050. Then i had the e8500 @4ghz and this went up to 39.9fps. Then after a couple of new ATI drivers this went up to 54fps! Then i had a 1920x1200 monitor and a gtx260 on the same day. The auto settings are higher and i get 50fps. The advantage of the gtx 260 over the 4850 is that the frame rate is much more consistant. The minimum frame rate is much higher.

Would a:

Phenom II 720 Tri-Core @ 2.8Ghz Stock
4GB DDR 3
4850 512MB

Be worth installing it for?

I bought it from Morrisons for £10 on my old rig but it was a joke. Not sure weather to go through the install again on this rig or wait till I have a new GPU?

note to everyone running at low frames, get a x64 operating system, i get frames of around 48-55fps everywhere in the city at high/very high 1680x1050 settings with this rig:

[email protected]
Galaxy GTX+ MAXCORE 216 Superclocked
XP X64
Abit IP35 Pro XE
2x2gb OCZ Platinum @ 1GHZ

if i run it on x86 XP i get maybe 5-10 frames less!

My system runs the game smooth as butter, using the settings it recommends at 1680x1050, game looks and runs far better than the 360 version. I think a lot of people think there system should be able to run the game with all the sliders up when they really shouldnt be, those settings are literally pushing the engine at there extremes, theyve said the console versions have them about about 20 to 30.

Yeah, with the latest ATi drivers and the latest patch for GTA, it should be more than playable with most options set medium-high, and will look great. :)

GTA IV butched my [email protected] and 280 Gtx OC Edition .....Stuttering endlessly

Then somethings clearly wrong with your pc set up, have more or less the same gfx card, your cpu is superior to mine, and yet I get a very healthy frame rate with no stutter on maximum settings, using either XP32 or Vista64.

Couldn't play it on my Q6600, 4GB and 8800GTX. I had the same framerate of about 27-30FPS on whatever resolution and settings I put it to, it was unplayable. I installed it yesterday with the latest patches and it's still the same

However if you can get it to work, it's brilliant.

Somethings a-miss Happy, you should breeze it :(

+1 i run XP X64 and Win 7 X64 and it is a must for this game.

True, played that for ages at one time.. not so much anymore

To be honest both of them can be fun BUT can is a big word, there are cheaters in GTA IV and san andreas MP.. though it has serious laggy issues even with low ping, GTA IV is not laggy online though.

kind of stupid rockstar would not even put in anticheat for an officially made multiplayer! and i didnt play it for that long and came across cheaters.

Have you actually tried the latest revision of MTA SA?

my system runs thwe game smooth constant 30-60 even when it rains at night. i think you'd need a quad core or a seriously overclocked duo to run it properly. a 1gb gfx card is also needed to run at high textures. i used to have a few crashes before the last patch but now i dont even get them.

gta4 was the worst one of the lot imo. Just a consoe port, a bad one at that. Oh and i dont like the russian story line.

I think all of the 3d GTAs have been good. I also think that they have got better each time whilst still keeping the game the same. Most of the people who moan about GTA4 are people who have a half decent PC that plays most things well but doesn't run GTA4 very well, just like all the people who moaned about crysis.

I wouldn't on that pc, get a decent cpu first else you will be very disappointed.

A 4870 or better or 8800GT or better is a must too ( yes it runs better on Nv cards).

But

NO NO and NO.
Sr2 runs even worse than GTA IV. Beside looking 100 times worse (it looks like vice city), having rubbish physics, having ANNOYING poor sound quality and generally being a big fail. It's far more repetitive than GTA IV imo due to having to get the respect thing before moving on to proper missions.

But SR2:
It looks crap.
It moves crap.
It runs crap.
It sounds crap.
The draw distance is appalling.
The car handling is jokeable.
Your ears hurt from the sound quality of the radio stations and tire squeeling sounds.
The city is small and a bit one toned.

Wow, talk about GTA fanboys. Are you saying GTA4 doesn't have its flaws?
I enjoyed both games but much preferred SR2 because it has COOP, more weapons, more player customisation etc. etc.

I think it's just the SR2 on the PC that he's refering too. The one on the 360 was meant to be pretty good, but the PC port is a well known pos.

Runs between 30-60FPS on my Phenom 9950 @ 2.8 with a BFG 280GTX OC on W7. Pretty good unless someone in MP spawns a s*** load of cars and causes everyone to lag out....

I'm running this on an AMD 5000+ with 2Gb and a 8800GTS under Vista SP1. I had to turn the visuals way down, but it's worth it for the game play. I had a crack at it on a 360 for the first time a few weeks ago and I have to say, I prefer the PC version no end. Been playing online a bit lately and I'd say there's a fairly good community out there - unfortunately there is also rampant cheating and mods in use. But I don't take my gaming too seriously so I'm still having a blast.

One point to note - up until recently was playing under Windows XP and was plagued with performance issues and CTDs in GTA4. Under Vista it is more stable than ever! (Although Vista itself is giving me plenty of grief elsewhere).

Not ran it again since the first patch so I'm not sure if it addresses the issues I was having. Ran reallywell on a 3.2ghz q6600 and gtx260-216 right up untill it exceeded it's ram usage and crashed. Sometimes it would take longer to happen than others but it was a bit naff. The other problem I had was the game not letting me progress past a certain point, which was quite far into the story (Not a pirate copy before all you newsgroup hipocrites start)

I'de definitely install it and play again if I knew those issues had been resolved though. When it wasn't crashing it's an absolutely spectacular game IMO.. Certainly the only GTA that made me want to play the missions. Do make sure you get a 360 pad for it though, the game was designed for them and it shows.

i have played and completed all the gta games and i have gta 4 on the ps3 at the day of release...i played it for about 30 mins and turned it off never to play it again...i dont think its as good as san andreas and i think the formula is kinda old and boring now..saying that most console games are boring compared to the pc versions...i dont know what its like on the pc though:D

Does gtaIV still not support SLI? or its fixed after patches, profile etc? would really appreciate an answer to this.
