**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

People are quick to forget that he has run MU's midfield for the last 3-4 seasons :/

£18m for Carrick was a bargain, the guy has a great football brain and knows how to play. His anticipation and positional sense is one of the reasons that Vidic and Ferdy look so good as he stops attacks before they get that far.

He's 21 and although Carvalho's still a great player he's getting on a bit and his knees are packing up, he's just always injured:(

He's almost begged JM to take him to Inter so he'll probably go and hopefully Deco ***** off too.

I moved it here;)

No worries about him leaving then ? :)

I noticed he was taking a fairly long time to come back from his injuries.
Deco didn't really do much, I do remember match of the day touching themselves over him though :/

Ban me ? why ?

He could go if he gets impatient I guess but hopefully that won't happen with Carvalho going and him moving up the pecking order.

MOTD fawned over Deco for his first 4 games or so then even they realised he had little to offer the PL now.:)

Where do you think needs strengthening ?
Deco was hardly missed, is Ballack staying ?
Carvalho is a great player like you said, but with Terry and Alex I doubt he will be missed, Alex has being brilliant.

Finally caught up with this bloody thread after being away since last week, and find I've missed two of the most ridiculous transfers in English history, and precisely **** all else. Bah.

Anyone else reckon Man United will go back to a more traditional 4-4-2 now? The 4-3-3 really only existed to give Ronaldo a free(ish) role to move from midfield into attack. With Rooney apparently demanding a properly up front position again, I can't see who out of the current squad they'd play on either forward wing. Rooney + Berbatov up front (someone else said Berbs should be the goal sitter, but I reckon the other way round would work better), Carrick/Fletcher/Hargreaves(lol) and someone in the middle behind, Nani/that young Serb kid/Valencia on the wings. Bosh.

Not only that - he was the only purchase during summer of 06, and we won the league in 07 (after being well off the pace the year before) during a time when Utd's midfield was awful , and I think that was also the season Scholes was out for a length of time with his eye problem

Summer of 07 we bought Hargreaves - who managed 26 games (good games mind you but still only 1/2 a season), and Anderson (who didnt play that much due to his youth/inexperience) - and Utd won the league again

I know its a whole squad / team that win the league rather than one or two players - but seeing as midfield was where we where really loosing it in 05/06 seasons - and Carrick has played give or take 150 games for Utd since then and won the league three times and got to the CL final twice - yes I think people do under-estimate him a huge amount

With Hargreaves or Essien (edit - or even Masch) beside him he would be a lot better without doubt, and either (fitness allowing) of those two would work very well along side him and make most teams tick very well indeed

Very few deep laying playmakers to compare to - Alonso and Fab (and Gerrard before he came a 2nd striker) are much further forward who are really the only well known players in a similar style but not the same area of the pitch imo

It doesn't make him world class; not many people play in the Kuyt role, but he's not world class...

Kuyt hasnt won one league title let alone being the only transfer the summer before winning the league for the 1st time in several years and then 3 in a row

Nope

I think we will see a variation of 4-4-2, 4-3-3 & 4-5-1 throughout a game but not the traditional English 4-4-2 system. Hell even England don't even play 4-4-2 nowadays :p

4-4-2 is a very limited system of play and is extremely predicatable.

I would have thought with all this money flying around it would have kicked off the buying but I think it will have the opposite effect and push all prices sky high and no one will get anyone until the last few weeks.

I watch a lot of midfielders and Carrick has very, very rarely struck me as being world class, if ever. I would say that he had a good season last season and the Man Utd fans did the same as they did with Anderson, started over rating him. Man Utd were good last season, they worked, subsequently a few players were better than they might be again for a while (Carrick especially). He's good, but he isn't on Fabregas' level and I'm not even sure Fab is at world class yet, so Carrick definitely isn't, regardless of the 'he plays really deep and doesn't really do loads but nobody else plays there' excuse, as Alonso is considerably better at what Carrick does and more imo.

Edit - Don't get me wrong I fully appreciate what he does, he's a fantastic passer of the ball who obviously has a good understanding of football and has played well in some big games, he just isn't effective, or quite good enough to be considered amongst the very best.

Don't they contradict each other somewhat?!

Can someone remind me of who has won the Premiership the last 3 years on the trot? What team has just made two successive Champions League Finals not to mention the Semi Finals the year before that?

You wouldn't have guessed it was Man Utd who's Right Backs are either crap going forward or cant defend to save their lives or in the case of all of them bar maybe Wes Brown who was only played their due to injuries both. Oh that not to mention our weak as water midfield with Carrick who's no good defensively or in attack so surely must just be generally rubbish all round oh that's without noting that he's just in the team covering for a player that was signed a year later than him.

And dont let me forget about the dead wood that is Scholes, Giggs, Anderson, Park & Nani and general crapness of Tevez and Berbatov.

Come on dont let me down I'm sure someone out there can come up with a perfectly reasonable argument why Rooney should stop playing football as well.

All the above I would expect from rival supporters who cant see past the biased of their own club but the so called Man Utd supporters on this thread and probably among the most spoilt glory hunting idiots I've ever had the misfortune of wasting my time reading their opinions on.

Rant over

Who cares if we have won it 3 years on the trot, it's Liverpools year now they have captured the greatest Right back in the history of the world.

I actually couldn't get to sleep last night thinking of the prospect of Villa signing for us..... shame it's just a dream :(

lol, not sure Fab's world class, he WAS the player of the tournement in Euro 2008, a silly number of assists, ran the best offence in the world, came on and changed each and every game and the games he started he was brilliant. He was so good that it was Fabregas that was double man marked in the final, not anyone else, it was the incredibly close attention paid to Fabregas that allowed Xavi/Silva and others the space to be effective in the final, even then Fabregas was very good. FOr everyone wetting themselves over Iniesta this year, whose been as good for 3 years, he started games in the Euro's, spain got nowhere, Fabregas came on and the goals went in, he was without question far more effective with his passing and movement than Iniesta. The difference in team football is the Barca team is just stupidly stronger with Eto'o infront of them instead of Adebayor. Fabregas is so good he even got the useless Adebayor to 30 goals.

Carricks also very good, but horrible defensively, partially down to complete lack of pace, his game isn't running or chasing, but picking out the right pass with the ball, he's not got Fabregas's ability to turn away from trouble that offsets Fab's possible lack of size and lack of real pace. But Carrick is very very good at picking out defence splitting passes. However, he has to be the most fowards of the two midfielders and with Anderson he's not, when he was played with Scholes almost all year long Scholes took up the more withdrawn position and Carrick stepped forward. Even in the CL final this was apparent, to the very second Scholes came on Carrick was suddenly staying put 10-20 yards inside the Barca half when they had the ball, while with ANderson on he was at the halfway line or deeper most of the time.

I have no idea how people are saying, "you can't compare him to xxx, they play in completely different positions", wtf, firstly they don't, he's an attacking central mid whose been forced back at points this year and since Utd don't have a real DM. He's always been a AMC and will always be a AMC, there are dozens, if not hundreds of top quality players that play his position, largely because midfield has more top players than any other position in the world. He's very good, not being as good as Fabregas, Iniesta or Gerrard doesn't make him crap, just literally not as good.

Utd HAVE to have a quality DM to play alongside him though as he's frankly, crap at the defensive role.
