My mate has bees at the bottom of the garden.

They are not honey bees, they have dug a hole in the back of his garden.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of them?

Thanks

Hot or boiling water.

I killed an ants nest once by connecting my hose pipe to the hot water and giving them a (very) hot shower.

Sure it's not wasps, bees don't dig but iirc wasps have been known to exhibit that behaviour when nesting?

A quick goole suggests it might be wasps

Cicada killers and spider wasps build their wasp nests in the ground by burrowing.
The digger wasps, cicada killers and burrowing spider wasps cause concern because of their activity in lawns or other high traffic areas and can be controlled by applying residual dusts such as DELTA DUST into the burrows.
Yellowjackets commonly build nests below ground in old rodent burrows or other cavities

 Flying miniature badgers wearing stripy jackets???!
Jesus! We're all dead

On a serious note, I suggest two things that we have employed successfully on ants in the past ... I'm sure they'll work on bees/wasps similarly ...

1) boiling water. More suited to patios than soil, really.

2) soak petrol into the soil (the tunnels will help it all flow in), wait for a while, add some more to be sure and light it up. Instant cure.
