I have to admit my ignorance on the Valencia issue but how good was he, his goal stats don't looking awe inspiring but whats his game all about ?

Pace, pace and more pace with some tricks as well

He was pretty good against Utd from a general play point of view (until he got infront of goal and missed a sitter) - but I havent seen that much of him tbf

So did everyone when he was smashing goals in for PSV left, right and center.

Why did no-one else go in for him then?

You say he is going to be another Veron - he came to us into his mid-late twenties - he was always a great player but just didnt slot into the united team at the time (he got a few injuries at bad times for us if I remember correctly, which didnt help his form). If he was so crap why did Chelsea sign him :D.

Benzema is still young and can still be shaped and moulded into a great player, like Ronaldo. I doubt many of you off here had even heard of Ronaldo when we signed him. In fact I'm sure most were slating him in the first couple of seasons due to his dribbling and no end product - haha!! :)

Thank god we arnt losing vidic. World class defenders seem to be like hens teeth these days.

benzema will be the best striker in world football in 3 years time.....you heard it here first.

Somebody planning on killing Torres/Pato/Aguero/Eboue etc. then?! Benzema is good, and is no doubt going to be very good in the future, but he's not the best young striker around now and I can't see him leapfrogging the players ahead of him.

Heard it on skysports news about 20 mins ago..they reported he signed a 2 yr extension to stay on at Barca...meh could be wrong though...but im pretty sure i read it about 20 mins ago

Nothing about it mentioned on the online Barcelona based websites.

Look's more than likely David Villa will be joining Barca.

Pjanic has now denied that he said anything to anyone about Benzema joining us :(

Lyon midfielder Miralem Pjanic has denied that he said team-mate Karim Benzema was close to completing a move to Manchester United.

The 19-year-old was quoted as stating in a Bosnian newspaper on Tuesday that the striker was just days away from switching to the Premier League champions for £38million.

Benzema has been strongly linked with a move to United as well as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal in recent weeks, despite declaring a wish to stay at Lyon for another season at least.

However Pjanic insists he said nothing which would suggest the French international is heading to Old Trafford.

"I have not granted any interview to the media. I do not know any other answer to say to you because I said nothing," he told Lyon Capital.

Meanwhile Real have revealed that they are set to unveil another big name signing on Wednesday, leading many to suggest they are close to securing Benzema's signature now that previous target David Villa looks set to stay at Valencia.

"We do not discard the possibility that in the next few hours, something could happen," Real director Jorge Valdano told Onda Cero.

"Nothing will happen with Villa over the next few days because Valencia have not changed their stance."

What? No bitching Tevez story this morning. That's a first. :p

I'm really pleased we have signed Valencia, an actual winger that our front line can be in good positions for crosses. He's not about goals at the minute, but that could change, he's about providing. An element that has been sorely lacking from the flanks for years now as everything practically went through the middle in the end.

It would be interesting if we were able to sign a good left back, not for cover but as a possible first team player, and we could push Evra up the field. Well it's an option. I don't want to see our wide players having to cover as much as they do to compensate for attacking fullbacks. I think it defeats the purpose really, having attacking defenders, and defending wingers. I'm looking at you Park.

Let's hope for a few more transfers in the coming days/weeks. I still reckon another attacking central midfielder would be ideal, someone like Arteta or Cahill who will get goals, another element of our play that has been lacking for absolutely ages. Along with a proper striker, and possible left back I'd be happy. :)

Skysports reporting that United have received a one off payment of £80m from Real for Ronaldo. Thats huge. Not split over a few years. Not incentive laden. Just one lump sum.

That's pretty darn impressive as very very few transfers are ever one large sum payment, nevermind a deal worth £80m.

Maybe some resident economists could tell us whether it's best getting it all now or instalments? As maybe the pound sterling could have increased in value as the economy slowly recovers over the next few years?

Oh god, according to some reports Real have agreed a deal for Benzema, I'm truly worried about an attack including Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema. I abhor that football has become this way (spending money that you don't have), it's become a fantasy world that I'm quickly becoming dis-enchanted with. What's the point in trying to run a tight financial ship when morons are just going to ruin it.

Interesting thought about Evra, that would actually make a lot of sense (after all sometimes his defending can get a bit wayward). Hopefully Fabio will be a good substitute this season, but a 1st choice LB would be great to get.

Dodo is meant to be arriving 1/2 way through the season - but he is a centre back, who has played on the left on occasion I believe.

some people here really dont like Wes Brown on the other side - so apart from Rafael and GN (who surely cant be a player for much longer) maybe we need a first leam Right full back also?

I think Wes Brown has been great in the last few years for us and deserves to keep his spot in the team when fit. The downside that along with Ferdinand they are now both 30, so ideally somewhere along the lines a replacement needs to be targetted or brought through the youth system for the future. O'Shea should definitely not be seen by anyone as a replacement. I hope Brown stays injury free in this new season, because if he's out for any length of time, I fear he'll turn into Gary Neville, and Brown has had a much more injury plagued career than Neville. That wouldn't bode well for him.

edited - not sure how that happened , was meant to be editing inital post

surely it doesnt matter as we need the cash to buy the two or three players we need to replace him with anyway lol

( it would also only matter when buying european players , so some deals would still cost the same either way :D)

Agree about Wes totally (apart from last season where he seemed to be injured for most of it, but in 07/08 he had an excellent season for sure). Is Dodo the replacement for Rio perhaps? Rio's back especially seems to be causing him more and more grief every season. With Evans and Vidic and Dodo if he comes upto scratch, and Cathcart ( I think he is another Central defenderis showing a lot of promise also Ive heard, Utd should be covered centrally for a few years
