It must be idiot season ...

I've got a guy from a kebab shop complaining that his camera system has packed up and it should be replaced instantly under warranty.

I go and check the machine and it's not been cleaned/touched in the 4 months it's been there, the panels are caked in grease (even the front usb ports are covered in it!), had to pry the side panel off with a screwdriver as it was glued shut with oil, case fans were running with oil, cpu fan was clogged, no airflow through the psu, etc, etc.

Asked him why it had never been cleaned (even just cleaning off the exterior fan grills would have helped) and he said thought it might break if he touched it. Couldn't understand how so much oil was in the pc as it's on the far side of the shop from the griddle/frier/etc.

I've found out from one of the staff that he turns off the extractors to save money.....

Just need to leave the case to drain for a few days and i should be able to get a few miles out of the drained fluid.

why is it even in the main shop?
did you install it there and if so why?
Get the box installed in another room and just run a cable to a tv in the main shop and maybe a remote extender if he needs remote control.. Or at least advise him to do it anyway.

The only other "separate" area has a 7 foot ceiling and a pizza oven, heat in there is unbearable for a normal person let alone a pc. And it runs into the same extractor as the rest of the shop. The machine is currently at the furthest point away from any sources of heat/grease it can be without being in front of the counter with the customers.

So which is it? :)
cctv camera system that has a computer as part of it ;/

We have a winner. I use a PC to record as they're relatively idiot proof and don't break down (famous last words).

in that case advise him to get it cleaned regularly. even with extractors on it is very likely to get compltley greased up.

I've got 3 other places in the same street using my machines, 2 kebab shops and a night club and none of them have any trouble. The machine in the shop where the wife works has been running for nearly 4 years without a hitch.

You mean you just build a standard pc from white box parts from the purple shirt brigade?

Probably not, purple shirt prices would take a big chunk out of my markup.

It was just the way you used the term PC rather than DVR, I had a mental image of you building a standard pc and using a divx encoder, rather than using a pre-built DVR which records a suitably encrypted video stream with a timecode etc etc....lol!

You have pretty harmless customers if you ask me. Last night one of ours managed to secretly curl one out in front of the cigarette counter at about 3am.

I'm amazed they managed it without being spotted. It must have been a, er, *hit and run incident.

It is a pc, but it's not a domestic divx encoder, everything is time and date stamped. Also using a pc means the system can be scaled up without it costing the earth, if you run a 4 channel dvr and need to add another 3 camers, you need to buy another complete dvr, whereas the pc just need to be opened up and have an additional recording card and extra harddrive adding.

Old piece of footage from one of these systems.
