**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

My first thought was "OMG, oh no!!!".

But having considered it, given he will be free, and we pay him on a pay-by-play basis, i'm willing to have a punt on him.

After all - when fit he does seem to contribute with goals.

Wagner Love ???? WAGNER BLOODY LOVE !!!!!, He has got to be the worst Brazillian forward I have ever seen in my life. He made Mirandhinia of Newcastle fame look like Pele

His birthday today (...yesterday now).

1959 Mirandinha born, Fortaleza, Brazil.
(1987-90)
He wasn't from Argentina but he wasn't ****in' brill either. Possessed a lethal shot but the danger was usually to spectators not goalkeepers. Still, his continual pouting and the filthy looks he engendered from Paul Goddard were worth the admission fee alone.

For the younger viewers out there, he was like a watered-down Tino but it's difficult to look back on his black and white days without smiling.

His scoring record wasn't bad in a rotten side and he did score twice at Old Trafford ;) and memorably at Anfield, where he celebrated unashamedly in front of the Kop. However, his greatest moment was probably the time he kicked then-Wimbledon goalkeeper Dave Beasant up the arse then ran away....

Mira came to this country with very little knowledge of the English language, but rapidly increased his vocabulary, thanks to a kindly local interpreter. His name? Paul Gascoigne.

Many are the hilarious tales of the beleaguered Brazilian attempting to go about his daily life in shops and bars etc. innocently addressing people with what turned out be a stream of obscenities.

And if anyone ever gets the chance to snatch a few words with our former manager Jim Smith aka Bald Eagle, you must ask him about Mira and the £17k loan for the pig farm....then stand back and watch that vein on his head start pumping furiously.

He must have loved him deep down though - bringing Mira's son Ernandes da Silva (also a striker) to Fratton Park on trial in November 2002.

I think Owen would be a good deal for MU and in fact most clubs if they can get him on a heavily incentivised contract. Even if they paid him £60k/week on average that would still represent only £6m over 2 years due to him being a free transfer. Or in other words that'd be the same as buying a £3m player and paying him £30k/week, bargain basement stuff.

Yes Owen may have lost a yard of pace due to his injury problems but what many people overlook is the fact that a lot of his goals come not from blistering runs from 40 yards out, but actually penalty box tap-ins. The reason for this, far from being a fluke, is that he has a very, very good positional sense in terms of the runs he makes off the ball. He darts in at the near post for crosses and also follows up teammates shots to pickup any scraps rebounding off the keeper.

I agree with all of that but Owen's always thrived on direct football with somebody doing the donkey work for him and from his England days, he never looked comfortable alongside Rooney. Saying that, although Owen's form when partnered with Rooney wasn't great, iinm Rooney's form and record alongside Owen is pretty impressive.

Inflammatory and probably libellous but I know people who believe that Owens desire to play football [certainly for a team not challenging for honours] was diminished to such an extent that perhaps......'phantom' injuries came into being......

I'm a United fan and while it seemed a ludicrous suggestion at first I reckon a pay-per-play deal at a club challenging for honours would see Owen 'fitter' that he's been for 4 years. He could still do a job. Could be another masterstroke from Ferguson.

Oh, and Wagner Love is definitely not the worst Brazilian forward. When Man City got Jo they brought the wrong Brazilian from Russia.

Reports suggesting a stringent medical at OT for Owen today before signing a deal worth 20k a week basic, but with bonuses /performance clauses worth upto another £80k ontop for a one year deal

Given that there is no transfer fee, thats worth a punt without a doubt no matter what happens. I just hope SAF continues with his other "targets" of Aguero, Sanchez etc etc also

Possebon has gone out on loan to a European club playing in the Europa Cup (cant think where at the moment)

When I read that I thought that just didn't sound like your words, then realised you cut and pasted it from NUFC.com :D

Isn't he still on newcastles payroll as a scout, finding you brazilian talent? :D

Mirror reckons were interested in Luis Fabiano now.

I didnt watch much of the confed cup, nor have i seen much of him. Anyone any insight?

/goes to youtube..

Owen would be a "shrewd" signing, to say the least. Very similar to the Larsson deal and we all know how that worked out. Pay him comparative peanuts and make him earn his gambling money.

Fabiano is more of a gamble IMO than Owen, big money and no-one knows how he can play in the PL. I personally would like to test Arsenals reserve and bid for Van Persie.

I've heard that somewhere before in a United lineup. And recently.

So, let's look at things like Liverpool will lose Alonso and Masch and get close to £60m.

Who would/should we buy to replace them?

(This is assuming that the yanks allow the whole £60m to be spent (which they should do!))

It's all about who is available really and nobody of their calibre springs to mind.

In fantasy land, Iniesta and Gattuso though....

The only thing I would say on the Owen subject is that this isn't something that we've come up with over night, regardless of whether or not we got Benzema I reckon this is something we were always going to pursue regardless (we are after all needing to replace the goals of both Tevez and Ronaldo)

Listening to talkSport yesterday and how they all (apart from Wrighty) were saying Fergies got desperate, I dont think anything could be further from the truth - you dont lose one transfer target and then move onto another that you hadn't even previously considered in the space of 24 hours especially as if reports are to be believed talks began last night.

Sky Sports are reporting that he's passed an initial medical so I look forward to how he does for us next season.

Joan Laporta claims Cesc Fabregas is Barcelona's top summer target and that the talented midfielder wants to re-join his former club.

The European champions have held a long-standing interest in the 22-year-old Spain international, who left Camp Nou in search of first-team football six years ago.

With arch-rivals Real Madrid splashing the cash this summer Barca president Laporta is eager to add Fabregas, who he claims wants to play for the Catalan giants, to Pep Guardiola's star-studded squad.

However, any attempt by Laporta to bring Fabregas back to Camp Nou is likely to end in failure with the talented playmaker only last week reiterating his commitment to the Gunners.

Laporta also claims to have immense respect for Arsenal, although his fresh public declaration of his desire to sign Fabregas is unlikely to go down well at Emirates Stadium.

"Cesc Fabregas has the Barcelona DNA in his body and we know that he wants to play for this club," Laporta told Cadena Cope.

"At the moment he is the leader at Arsenal and a very important player for them. But Cesc is wanted by me, by the coach Pep Guardiola and by the sport director Txiki Begiristain.

"We are concentrating all of our efforts on it, but at the same time we have a lot of respect for Arsenal.

"We have positive relations with Arsenal so it will not be an easy topic to talk to them about."

and a bit of United news

Manchester United have announced that Rodrigo Possebon has joined Sporting Braga on a season-long loan.

The Brazilian midfielder moved to England from Internacional in the January transfer window in 2008 but has failed to make an impression at Old Trafford.

Having made his debut in the first game of last season, at home to Newcastle, Possebon, 20, made a total of only three starts and five substitute appearances.

A statement on United's official website said: "Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Possebon will spend the entire 2009/10 season on loan at Portuguese side Sporting Braga."

Last season Braga finished fifth in the Liga Sagres and will be taking part in the 2009/10 Europa League.

Good for him to get some aspect of first team football but I think this probably marks the beginning of the end of his long term United future

Where have all these Owen fans come from?

I thought he'd past it, waste of space time and money?!

Well If I was a man utd fan i'd only be happy with Owen if it was a year contract and at least 50% less than what he has been lovingly taking at Newcastle

hahah its the same across a number of football forums.

He was past it could not hit a barn door no pace. When he was playing for Newcastle.

Now he great :o

I hope the deal goes though very soon. It will save Newcastle 600k this month alone!!!!!!

A pay as you go deal is a load of balls btw. He will be on a huge wage. If he passes his second medical

We simply wouldn't be able to replace them with equal quality. I would confidently say we wouldn't win a thing next season if we lost both of them. They are just too valuable and do an amazing job for the team over the course of the season.

I think Alonso is replacable if the funds are availible (and the desire to come to Liverpool), but there is no better DM than Masch in the world at the moment. Over the course of a season, he contributes so much to our side controlling games and giving the fight back to the opposition. He's also incredibly fast and can track down players from all over the field.

£60m simply wouldn't be enough. R.Madrid have spoiled this transfer window and possibly future ones.

It's called fickle.

One moment, Owen is awful, a waste of space, should retire etc... next minute when he is either linked or on the verge of joining, he always had the talent and Fergie will re-ignite him and make him the best in the entire world.

:)
