**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Owen will get Man U tap ins, he can't offer more than that now. He's a poacher, should do well.

AT what point did people suddenly switch back to thinking offering goals was a bad thing. Now everyone wants a Rooney or Tevez, type who runs about a lot rather than scores. Rooney's actually talented, Tevez isn't, Tevez, is the new Vassell. Can't score, insists he's a striker, spends his whole time trying to foul midfielders and making fans think he puts in effort so must be good.

We get a batch of "try's hard but gets nothing done" players that everyone thinks is great every 4-5 years, a couple years later everyone realises they are completely incompetant as footballers, but only after they are safe on 5 years 50k a week contracts.

How people think of Tevez now is EXACTLY everything Vassell got credit for 5 years go.

Owen will be superb, because he's a great striker, he's not a midfielder, doesn't claim to be and more importantly, doesn't need to be.

AS long as his wages reflect possible injuries, he's a fantastic deal. Frankly if his wages reflected how much he plays, paying 5 mil would still be a good deal. if he scores 30 goals in 60 games for you, if he does it over 2 years, or 4 years, if you pay him the same either way, who cares?

Its hard to tell if you are a bitter Newcastle fan who is annoyed because you spent so much money and wages on a dud player that you were going to have as your main striker or you are just being silly. He is never going to be the best in the league again and no one is saying that. People didnt slate Michael Owen for being rubbish, they slated newcastle for paying so much for him. There are always loads of much worse strikers in the league than Owen but no one else is stupid enough to pay what newcastle did for owen.

All people are saying is that for the price we are paying he is worth a go. If the rumours are true about the terms then we get a potentially useful player for near to nothing. We wont rely on him like newcastle were hoping to do. If he does nothing we lost a few quid, cest la vie. If he does well then we have got a good deal. Its a very low risk signing. He will provide cover up front and in case we cant get another striker by the transfer deadline then he is a safety net.

a lot of people slated both Newcastle and Owen, it wasn't a case of it was just Newcastle that got the bullet...

Many people have turned against Owen since 2005. I'm not so sure we will see them people say the same things once he scores a few goals for Man Utd, thats what I'm getting at. Many people that said Owen is still good and can still be Englands no.1 striker were laughed at... and I'm saying, as many people will probably agree, as soon as he nets a few for Man Utd he will be in the frame for England again and many people will probably be singing his praises.

I'd definitely reserve judgment until he plays a good few games and has scored a good few goals. Man Utd will definitely benefit if he plays more than 20league games, he will definitely scores goals as long as he plays and it might just be the path his career needs from an England point of view, in fact it's the best possible path joining Man Utd.

If I was him I'd take any money, obviously rumours that it can be as little as 20k a week, plus performance bonus, at Man Utd he will snap that deal up no bother if he really cares for his World Cup chance

Agreed - he will be like ole was a true poacher/predator. If we will be paying him on a pay to play basis then it is a shrewd signing from fergie. I guess he made all his money from newcastle :D:D:D

i can sum up next season for you, hes not going to too good, hes not going to be fit, and hes rarely going to play, we picked him up from the 50p shop.

Its not a big deal, next story please.

Its amusing, we were going to sign, Ribery, Benzema, Villa but instead we get Owen!

im having my fingers crossed this is just a "over night thing" and not a replacement for the above, were not SAF at the end of the day, we dont know what hes thinking.

for literaly free though, no win no fee basis, its one of them where you say why not i supose

I like that, we have our pay monthly players and then we have our Owen on a pay as you go tariff. I dont know about most united fans on here but I have always thought Owen was still ok but not as good as he used to be. He just seems permenently inujured which some people do manage to misinterpret as him not scoring very often.

Its quite amazing how many people question one of the greatest managers of all time - yeah occasionally he has picked a lemon (djemba-djemba, klieberson to name two) and occasionally a great player just doesnt work in the EPL (Veron) but this guy has got decent records at all the clubs he has played at , here and abroad

As long as the wage isnt serious money, and its based more on performances etc all parties are onto a winner - and if anything Owen has more to gain from an England /WC position as well as potentially winning medals for Utd also

Its worth the experiment imo

I've been saying for the last year that Owen on a free is a bit of a no-brainer, not many Manc's agreed then ;)

Saying that, I wouldn't expect a great deal from him. Presuming that he's not going to be first choice then the only value in having Owen as part of your squad is as cover not as an impact sub. Owen's never been comfortable coming off the bench and has always needed a run in the side to get sharp and iirc, whenever he came off the bench for us he ended up getting injured.

I admit I was one of the people who laughed quite hard when the rumours were circling about Liverpool taking him back.

However I also assumed it would be on a proper wage, and not a pay-by-play type contract. If we'd have taken Owen on anything more than about £30K/week i'd be crying into my dinner.

As a free transfer, and on a low wage with the rest paid by appearances, goals etc. he's certainly worth a punt. As well as that, he's just the type of player we could do with - a goal poacher, not someone like Rooney/Berbatov who drops deep and as a result, nobody is left in the box.

You think he'll be getting sub £30k per week? I'd be very suprised if he was getting less than £50k and then a further £50k based on appearances etc.

His best attribute now is probably his heading, he'll score more headers than Rooney and Berbatov and whilst he's not as good as Ronaldo in the air his timing is probably better and so will replace at least one of Ronaldo's attributes.

pictures on ssn of owen leaving carrington and entering hospital for latest stage of tests.

as they just said, sherringham, cantona and larsson all came in towards the latter stages of their career and did very well. personally think its a great deal to do, no fee and potential goals.

However only Larsson out of those had serious injury woes during his career.

Larsson did do fantastically well for us and scored I think 3 goals in 13 games whilst playing some great football too.

Cantona was older and a little more off the rails, whilst Teddy was older and a proven goal scorer.
