**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Owen had a far better goal scoring ratio for you than Fowler and did the business consistently.

I hope he can do well for us, but it all depends on his fitness. If he stays in shape he'll get bags full of chances from our players.

I am not disputing this, Owen never had the same affinity with the fans that Robbie did

Edit: should have put all of that in 1 post :o

Woah!

Firstly I'm glad we got Owen. It's very very weird and strange seeing him wearing a Utd top but I think he can do a job for us. It's not the first time Ferguson has bought a player who was considered dead and buried career-wise or at an age where their best days were behind them. I look at Van Der Sar playing to retirement at Fulham, did he think at age 35 (then) that he'd be able to say in a few short years that he'd be the goalkeeper behind 3 back to back Premier League titles, Carling Cup and Champions League victories?

I cast my eye back to 1997, a 31yr old Teddy Sheringham brought into the team to try and fill part of the void left by Cantona. Fast forward 4 years aged 35, he can look back at 3 league titles, F.A Cup and Champions League victories.

I refuse to dismiss Owen like others have and will, and this isn't because we've just signed him. I've said for a while that he could be an option, and especially given the circumstances of a free transfer and a unique contract, he wants to play for us and prove he still has it as a footballer. He wants to win. He can score. It's a win win. He has lost some the attributes that scared defenders for years, but his game will change at Old Trafford. Ferguson is good at that. He won't have Owen busting a gut running around like a headless chicken, he'll find a role and stick to it and hopefully we'll see Owen enjoying himself again.

Now onto Benzema, as much as I held a glimmer of hope that he might want to sign for us, once Madrid got involved there was only one destination for him. I can't blame him and good luck to him. Like 99.9% of football fans out there I want players who want to play for the club I support. Old Trafford didn't rank high enough for him, so be it.

I've read some absolute crap in here over the last week about Ronaldo, yes he was selfish and could come across as a complete eejit, but look at what he achieved with us. My god! And unlike a certain fan favourite in Tevez who I have absolutely no time for anymore, Ronaldo hasn't come out and dismissed the club or the manager. He's had some cracking interviews in the last few weeks and it's clear that Ferguson is held in high regards and always will be. The professional relationship between them may have ended but there's still a bond. I can remember the same thing with Beckham, he left under a cloud, his footballing ability then called into question by Utd fans. It's pathetic.

I don't see a big signing for us this summer. There is too much draw to Spain at the minute, Spanish players will not want to leave Spain when Barcelona and Real Madrid are reinforcing their squads, unless that is, the Spanish B team (Liverpool) come a knocking. :p

I remain insistent that another central midfielder is needed, a player who can actually score would be fantastic. I'm not dissing Anderson, but whoever is paired in midfield there never seems to be enough goals. Another striker would be very welcome, Huntelaar would be perfect. And we still need to address that left side of the park. Or maybe some players will step up next season. I think more than ever we are going to see some big changes next season with our playing style addressing the strengths of the team overall. I hope to see better performances, stronger and more prolific performances.

The summer is still young, there are 8 weeks until the transfer deadline, I will stay positive that our concerns will be addressed by the end of it, and if they aren't, well it's time to put even more faith into players bought recently to prove if they are Man Utd players. :)

I think he was always respected at Liverpool for his striking ability, and that not a lot of Liverpool fans would say that he was anything other than excellent (except for his last season or two with us). However, as you say, he never seemed to care quite as much as Robbie.

Even in his last few seasons with you he still scored on average over a goal every two games.

Yea I know; I'm not disputing his goalscoring record, but certainly in his last season he just looked thoroughly miserable all the time! Like I say though, I reckon he can do a job at Man Utd for a couple of seasons.

Well according to Fiorentina, Wenger has actually made a bid close to his buyout clause already!

Seems like they want Eboue and a bit of cash, which is still a pretty good deal just to get rid of him :p

I thought Melo signed a new contract last week? Seems a bit odd.

From what's been said now it seems he only signed the contract to add a 25M euro buyout clause.

Basically Fiorentina wanted to make sure that they got at least that amount as Arsenal and Juve were interested.

I think I've misunderstood the deal, they're not giving Arsenal 25m and Melo in exchange for Eboue? Call the deal off ASAP!

Aye, he obviously signed the new contract in appreciation of Fiorentina, so they'll at least get 25m for him as it was obvious he was off anyway. Looks almost certain that he's coming to Arsenal anyhow, Fiorentina wouldn't put that on their official site unless it was almost a done deal.

Yeah looks like he's just done it to make sure they get a decent price for him as he knows that he'll be leaving.

Wenger must really, really like him to have already offered anything near £21M! I wonder how much they rate Eboue at? I'd say £13-15M plus Eboue would probably do it.

I'm very surprised by the amount mentioned unless we get an amazing amount for Eboue (e.g 5mil+). Won't count my chickens until i see him in an Arsenal shirt though. All we need is AC to buy Ade and a new striker to come in and i'll be very happy. Especially as it looks Gallas and Toure will be staying.

I think Eboue is worth over 10m (Euros). He's played in a CL final and the CL for many years as Arsenal's first choice right back. If Johnson can fetch £18m then Eboue HAS to be worth upwards of £8m.
