Woah!
Firstly I'm glad we got Owen. It's very very weird and strange seeing him wearing a Utd top but I think he can do a job for us. It's not the first time Ferguson has bought a player who was considered dead and buried career-wise or at an age where their best days were behind them. I look at Van Der Sar playing to retirement at Fulham, did he think at age 35 (then) that he'd be able to say in a few short years that he'd be the goalkeeper behind 3 back to back Premier League titles, Carling Cup and Champions League victories?
I cast my eye back to 1997, a 31yr old Teddy Sheringham brought into the team to try and fill part of the void left by Cantona. Fast forward 4 years aged 35, he can look back at 3 league titles, F.A Cup and Champions League victories.
I refuse to dismiss Owen like others have and will, and this isn't because we've just signed him. I've said for a while that he could be an option, and especially given the circumstances of a free transfer and a unique contract, he wants to play for us and prove he still has it as a footballer. He wants to win. He can score. It's a win win. He has lost some the attributes that scared defenders for years, but his game will change at Old Trafford. Ferguson is good at that. He won't have Owen busting a gut running around like a headless chicken, he'll find a role and stick to it and hopefully we'll see Owen enjoying himself again.
Now onto Benzema, as much as I held a glimmer of hope that he might want to sign for us, once Madrid got involved there was only one destination for him. I can't blame him and good luck to him. Like 99.9% of football fans out there I want players who want to play for the club I support. Old Trafford didn't rank high enough for him, so be it.
I've read some absolute crap in here over the last week about Ronaldo, yes he was selfish and could come across as a complete eejit, but look at what he achieved with us. My god! And unlike a certain fan favourite in Tevez who I have absolutely no time for anymore, Ronaldo hasn't come out and dismissed the club or the manager. He's had some cracking interviews in the last few weeks and it's clear that Ferguson is held in high regards and always will be. The professional relationship between them may have ended but there's still a bond. I can remember the same thing with Beckham, he left under a cloud, his footballing ability then called into question by Utd fans. It's pathetic.
I don't see a big signing for us this summer. There is too much draw to Spain at the minute, Spanish players will not want to leave Spain when Barcelona and Real Madrid are reinforcing their squads, unless that is, the Spanish B team (Liverpool) come a knocking.
I remain insistent that another central midfielder is needed, a player who can actually score would be fantastic. I'm not dissing Anderson, but whoever is paired in midfield there never seems to be enough goals. Another striker would be very welcome, Huntelaar would be perfect. And we still need to address that left side of the park. Or maybe some players will step up next season. I think more than ever we are going to see some big changes next season with our playing style addressing the strengths of the team overall. I hope to see better performances, stronger and more prolific performances.
The summer is still young, there are 8 weeks until the transfer deadline, I will stay positive that our concerns will be addressed by the end of it, and if they aren't, well it's time to put even more faith into players bought recently to prove if they are Man Utd players.
